After the flower fades away...

What was once a busy and almost daily operation has now faded to a rarely operating job. There is not much left when it comes to railroading down at North Avenue on Chicago's west side, especially on the Chicago Terminal side with only one remaining customer on the line. Here the job is seen in February of 2018 running around a gon to spot at Sipi Metals. The old dinosaur, ILSX 900, is a 1951 built SW8 which started its life as Algoma Central 140. It was then painted into its current Chicago Terminal colors and has been the North Avenue switcher for the entirety of its CTM career. This job has dwindled to an as needed operation only operating maybe a dozen times a year with a very uncertain future. Its been sad watching this historic piece of railroading fade away but I am glad I was able to have a hand in the final operations of the Chicago Terminal at North Avenue and on Goose Island.

I had a surprise sighting on Christmas Day when a pair of Red-tailed Hawks spent ten minutes spiraling and soaring together overhead. They would come close together at times, then move apart, or take a slight dive as if in a choreographed aerial event. Most of the time they were high above me, as I walked down the street following them, sometimes feeling slightly lightheaded from looking through the lens, trying to follow their movement. They eventually soared away together high above the clouds and out of sight. This hawk was the last one within range of my ability to focus.

If I had taken this shot 40 years ago given the same light it wouldn't have looked any different at all and I suppose, apart from the neatly trimmed meadow and street lighting, it could even have looked like this more than 100 years ago. It's a comforting thought given the many changes we have all become used to over the past few decades.

When I grew up in this town during the 60s it seemed to be an idyllic place to be brought up in and I dare say it hasn't changed much from a child's perspective even today. And there's the point, that as a child you are not aware of the world around you except within your immediate vicinity. You are obviously not interested in the newspapers or the news on the telly, life has far more important things waiting for you like the swings in the park, a picnic by the river, the first time you feel love.

So when we look around us and feel the world is not going the way we would wish maybe we should try to look at it from a child's perspective and remind ourselves of how life can be made up of simple pleasures without having to know about what happened on the other side of the world today or even in the next town.

After all, if I had known or even understood that my childhood home town was surrounded with nuclear weaponry within just a few kilometers I could hardly have done anything about it! Better not to read the newspapers, take out those rose tinted spectacles and enjoy that picnic by the river if only for your children's sake.

Hope you don't have the Monday blues!

A faded rose and a rusty heart can represent a lasting relationship. The rose represents beauty, while the rust represents the struggle of being together.

This is a picture of a withered rose which was part of a flower bouquet my mum has got from one of her friends. Since the rose itself looks kind of old fashioned I decided to overlay a texture from an antique paper sheet to make it look even older. Hope you like it!
