July 20, 2016--New York City-- Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that the Task Force to Combat Worker Exploitation has directed 1,547 businesses to pay nearly $4 million in back wages and damages to more than 7,500 workers since its inception in July 2015. The Governor also announced several initiatives to improve worker health and safety, including a multi-agency investigation into the exploitation of dry cleaning workers and a coordinated effort to ban harmful chemicals, such as perchlorethylene (PERC), that are commonly used in the industry. Additionally, the state will launch a new $5 million grant program and RFP for non-profit organizations to expand services to help exploited workers. (Don Pollard/Office of the Governor)

I've been intrigued by the idea of the '365 project' for a while now but after reading the exploits of a couple of my contact friends who've just finished theirs, I thought I'd attempt it, too. I say 'attempt' because long term projects like this aren't my particular thing, I can be fickle with subject and genre, the 'butterfly syndrome' as my partner and my brother both describe it. Still, I like a challenge, and trying to take a shot a day is certainly that. Whether it's possible for me to do it will be tested most during autumn and winter when I only have an half hour lunch break at work but, onwards and upwards, eh!

The many and varied reactions that can be elicited from a simple image be it a photograph, painting, etching or whatever has always fascinated me. Take the image above, it came about because when I took the decision yesterday to go for the 365 (actually, it's 366 because 2012 is a leap year, hmm, talk about bad timing!) I was stuck indoors with rain coming down outside like a storm of spears, so my options for producing my very first 366 shot were extremely limited. Then I got to thinking about earlier that morning when I awoke to my 7.00am alarm trilling away beside me. I'd rolled over onto my back with the hope in my heart that it was going to be a lovely, light filled morning, instead, the rain was battering the loft windows against a brightening canopy of dull grey cloud. For the next 20 mins or so I just lay there watching for the rain to stop and waiting for the light to come...which was very therapeutic, to be honest. So, using that moment as my inspiration I set the scene up, switched off the side lights and used the spotlight above my bed as the main source of light...thank god I bought a remote release with an extension cord, there was no way I could get into bed before the 10 second delay was up. After six or more attempts I finally captured an image that was close to my original idea, which you now see above. (Just in case anyone thinks I sleep in a tomb, my bedroom is in reality very bright, airy and minimalist, the walls are a lovely sandy, terracotta-ish orange with 'Stone cream' ceiling and cream carpet, with lots of natural wood furniture..hmmm...I think I'm overcompensating, better stop now!)

The really interesting part of the whole process was, as I said earlier, people's reactions to the final image. When my mother saw it she freaked, "Oh, my god, that's terrible! You look dead! You could be on your death bed at a wake! Take it down! etc, etc", others have remarked similar things including, "You doing a vampire thing here or what?"...all very interesting to hear. I agree with their observations, it'd be disingenuous of me if I didn't, but it could also have spiritual connotations, too, even the title lends itself to that interpretation. Personally, and for all its potentially dark and morbid vibe, I think it's quite an apt and positive image for the time of year, after all this is the 'dark time', the time when the sun is at its lowest, when night and shadows rule and death seems ever present but, out of that darkness comes light and life, the cycle continues, we change and grow.

The main reason I finally bit the 366 bullet is because of the lack of photography I did last year due to naff weather, illness, work etc. My thinking here is that by being under the self-imposed constraints of producing an image for 366 then I'll not only be maximising time with my camera but also I'll be pushing myself, my skills and my imagination out of their comfort zones when I can't get into the countryside or up on to the hills etc. Some people have themes for their 365(6) but with me it'll be whatever catches my eye, imagination or what I can squeeze into the time I have, 'spontaneous' and 'contrived' will be my bywords. It'll be interesting to see how long this 366 lasts, probably a week knowing me...and hopefully without as much writing as I've done for this one...or "utter twaddle" as some well-meaning friends have put it! :-)

Oh yes, excuse the dark and contrasty images I'm posting of late but I'm thoroughly enjoying being unleashed upon CS5 and Photo Tools 2.6 (awesome set of filters!), I'm finally getting to create images similar to the ones I did in the Ye Olde Days when I used Tri-X and FP4 film.

...and this looks better in L (which is where my mother would love to consign the image above, "It's horrible, our Anthony!")....mothers, eh!

In 1862, a trading port was opened in Danshuei. In the meantime, the resources in the mountain area near Dasi were rapidly exploited and tea and camphor became the main exporting products. Furthermore, city streets including Sin Street, Caodianwei Street and Houwei Street were developed at the same time. In 1886, Mingchuan Liu established an administration office to undertake full responsibility for development which boosted the prosperity of Dasi street region and gave birth to Sinnan Street (now Jhongshan Road).

The early years of the colonial rule of Taiwan were the prime time of Dasi. In those years, the resources near the mountain region continued to be exploited and the life in the stores and wine houses on the streets of Dasi was hurly-burly. A city restructuring plan to expand roads and add arcades was announced in 1912 and therefore splendidly decorated archways mushroomed one by one.

As the excavation of Taoyuan Ditch in 1928 had quite an impact on the river transport of Dahan Stream, Dasi lost its position as an industry center and ceased to develop. Accordingly, to date Dasi old streets have been able to remain as they were in the old days.

In response to safeguarding concerns identified by our Rochdale organised crime team, we’ve executed eight warrants this morning and locked up six suspected gang members.

We identified a teenage boy who was being exploited and coerced into drug dealing by a suspected local gang.

With immediate safeguarding measures put in place, we were able to pursue those responsible

As the investigation developed, we identified further victims, including a vulnerable adult whose house was being cuckooed and used as a stash house for the gang.

This morning, we’ve arrested six men aged 18 - 26 on suspicion of conspiracy to supply class A and B drugs and modern slavery offences.

£30,000 cash has been seized along with cannabis and drugs paraphernalia.

Today’s activity is a key example of partnership work and effective information sharing. It’s enabled us to identify crucial members of a suspected organised crime group, but most importantly, we’ve been able to safeguard several children and vulnerable adults.

Sergeant Mark Lutkevitch from our Rochdale Challenger team said: “Exploitation, coercion, and violence are the foundations of modern slavery and drugs trafficking, and gangs will often exploit the vulnerable to further their profits. Our arrests this morning are part of a longstanding investigation into several organised crime groups operating across Rochdale that we strongly believe are involved in the exploitation of young people.

“Young people and vulnerable adults will be threatened as the criminals exert control, which is why tackling exploitation is a high priority for us. We have specialist officers working with young people in our communities to tackle the vicious cycle of gang recruitment, and teams of officers on the frontline pursuing offenders.

“Our communities are key in helping us be one step ahead of the criminals. By being our eyes and our ears and finding the courage to report what is taking place in your area only strengthens our relentless pursuit of organised crime and could make a real difference for a child.

“I want to encourage communities to trust their instinct. If something doesn’t feel right; report it. If you think somebody is being exploited, or you think a house might have been taken over by drug dealers, feed that information to us. If you want to remain anonymous, report it through Crimestoppers, and we will act.”

My old 1984 Alembic Series II "Exploiter" bass. The bridge and tailpiece. Note the brass block that the bridge is mounted on.

I had this bass built in the summer of 1984. The only options (besides the walnut/maple/purple heart construction) were graphite rods in the neck and a neck shaped like a Rickenbacker 4001 that I'd been very comfortable playing. This is still the most musical bass I've ever owned, but it also weighs so much that it's seen relatively little use.

Public reenactment of a speech given by Coretta Scott King at a peace march in Central Park on April 27, 1968, three weeks after her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. In this speech, which was based on notes found in the late Dr. King's pockets, King addresses the war in Vietnam, domestic poverty, and the power of women to effect social change. Gina Brown, a New York-based actor and former welfare mother, delivered the speech on location in Central Park on September 16, 2006.

Quotes:

"It is very clear that our policy at home is to try to solve social problems through military means, just as we have done abroad. The interrelatedness of domestic and foreign affairs is no longer questioned. The bombs we drop on the people of Vietnam continue to explode at home with all of their devastating potential."

"There is no reason why a nation as rich as ours should be blighted by poverty, disease and illiteracy. It is plain that we don’t care about our poor people, except to exploit them as cheap labor and victimize them through excessive rents and consumer prices."

Photograph taken in the glorious golden hour around sunrise at 05:36am on April 10th 2010 captured from the walkway overlooking the shingled beach off Lochside drive, in beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Here, we are looking over towards Mt Baker in Washington State, USA from beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Also known as Koma Kulshan, (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’),she is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States, standing 3,286 metres tall and was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880.

The name Mount Baker first appeared in print in Captain Vancouver’s 1798 narrative of his voyage around Vancouver Island. Legend has it that his third-lieutenant, Joseph Baker, was the first to spot the mountain while they sailed into Dungeness Bay on April 30th, 1792. Also known by the Lummi as Kwud-Shad, and Koba (meaning 'high mountain always covered with snow', was the Skagit name.

Turning the tables on and protesting against the use of animals in cosmetic experiments...

Dr.Katz, has placed Shelly in a metal vice, her face and torso is scarred by burns from the chemicals housed in the cannisters on the right.

An electrode has been placed in her brain and can be seen on the outside of her head.

Blood from countless experiments seeps through the cracks in the paintwork.

Dr. Katz's work is observed by a rat, ladybird and a spider-cow.

A human skull lies discarded in the left corner of the room, it glows in the dark due to the radiation, it was subjected to when once a living being.

The work is housed in an MDF box.

The vice is made out of a rescued piece of metal and ceramic work, thrown away by one of my college classmates.

The ladybird and spider-cow (possibily a cake-decoration) were found in the street!

The ceramic cat I used for this piece, was found in the garden of an empty house, and as it had childhood memories for me, was quickly pocketed, taken home, cleaned up and kept safe until I could think of something to use it for.

The ceramic cat, was once part of a kitsch glass bowl ornament, (My Great-Uncle had one of these, which as a child I loved; the bowl was red and had a little ceramic mouse inside, which looked up at 2 ceramic cats, which were perched on either side of the exterior of the bowl -looking in at it.)
