Looks a bit like dog food! :P
But after a hard days walk, rice, luncheon meat 午餐肉, Chinese 腊肠, braised eel 红烧鳗鱼 and mixed vegetables taste like five-star cuisine!
Singapore Chicken in Plum Sauce
err... not sure abou this this.
The skin was crunchy, but quite oily. It could barely keep its head above the torrent of plum sauce!

What do you do when you've got too many lychees in the fridge threatening a rebelion? You skin them alive, rip their hearts out, and you bake them at 180°C until they beg for mercy. Then you rip them up and savour the warm, moist fluffiness.
In other words, you make Lychee and Green Tea Muffins. Or at least, Julia did. I washed up :)

We first bought this rhododendron from a flower show nearly 4 years ago now. We were told to keep it in a pot.
This year, finally we see 2 buds! I hope the hot days we've just had didn't burn the buds, as it did the leaves.
Updated 2007.11.29: I suppose we could try a little Sulphate of Potash. Thanks Donna!

We got a pot of rhododendrons nearly 4 years ago from a flower show, where the lady promised that they would produce the biggest, most fragrant blooms you'd ever seen in a rhododendron.
In November, we started to see a bud. Over the next few months, it grew into a fist-sized bud. Finally, we get to see the blooms!
Rather than let it wilt outdoors, I decided to cut it and bring it indoors, and the fragrance filled the dining area ... for 1 day. The next day, they wilted. Somehow, the stems don't seem to absorb water very well.

Julia made 牛"月展" (maybe there's no such character in 普通话 Putonghua?) beef brisket over the weekend, and she wasn't afraid of using spices!
She had cinnamon quills, star-anise, cumin and 陈皮 dried mandarin peel, along with garlic and ginger. The spices worked quite well, but we both got the feeling that it was still a bit bland. Perhaps I should have reduced the gravy a bit more?
I asked the agent if the owner would repair it before selling mad I got a, "What you see is what you get. If the vendor fixed this, then he would have to fix ...", and I got the point.
Does this mean that this place is not worth fixing?

A bit of a scouting mission to check out Laksa Me. The opinion of The Age Cheap Eats guide can occasionally differ from mine when it concerns Asian food, especially South East Asian food.

We had a wonderful dinner at Horoki, and I was pleased to see that they offer a three options for a Horoki Lunch Platter.

But, uh, that's a sandwich not a baguette! But it was good bread!

Julia and I made beancurd rolls with minced pork. Brushed with oil and baked in the oven. Not only is it lower-fat than frying, it saves me from having to slave over a hot wok full of oil!

Can someone please enlighten me?

A very Thai place. A lot of their customers spoke Thai. Unfortunately, we found the food too sweet (sugary).
We then took a walk along Mordialloc Pier. A cool change from the hot and sticky days we've just had.

A stroke of genius, encasing tender roast duck in a buttery shortcrust pasty flavoured with orange rind! Add a dollop of chestnut puree for some sweetness, et voila!

yum! if a bit salty.
the chunks of pork were very nicely roasted, with a nice smokiness. The fat was smooth and oozing with flavour. Nice, but a bit rich.

Creamy native pepper chevre goat's cheese with 100% rye bread, both from Milawa Cheese.
Yummy with a salad of mixed leaves, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, with a bit of orange zest for some, err... zest!

Mum decided that she wanted to try to make a savoury Vietnamese pancake, so she enlisted Aunt Lee Geok to experiment.
The finished product was very tasty, but because we tend to be health conscious, we can't bring ourselves to use the requisite amount of oil to crisp the edges.
