Brittle stars, an alternate common name is the 'serpent stars', are a species-rich class of echinoderms with outstanding regenerative abilities. Living under rocks or in crevices with only the tips of the arms exposed, they are known to be seafloor ecosystem engineers. They reshape the seafloor sediment surface and influence the distribution of other seafloor species. They also provide nutrition to fish, sea stars and crab predators.
Their presence in a sediment sample is one indicator of a healthy benthic community. They embody nature's fragility and resilience.

60 030 is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow as it stands on the down goods departure line at the stop board to exit Kingmoor Yard. The loco is working engineers train 6J35 19.15 Kingmoor Yard to Eastriggs in association with the redoubling of the Gretna Green to Annan stretch of the G&SW route. Sadly 60 030 only lasted another nine months in traffic before being laid up at Toton Depot on 29/04/2008 never to work again to this day.

This passage takes place immediately after what had been a long, hard day for Jesus. He had found out of the execution of John the Baptist earlier in the day and he had tried to be alone, but then the crowds followed out to a remote location. It was there that he healed the sick and fed 5,000 men plus women and children a satisfying meal of fish and bread. Is it any wonder that he was physically, emotionally, & spiritually exhausted and took action to rest and pray? Sometimes...we need to do that too!!

The Claymills Victorian pumping station is keen to encourage the next generation of engineers. This young man took us down to the the space above the boilers and explained the restoration project he was working on with his team .

Sometimes my mind goes blank when it comes to titles. This title is referring to a review of the lens I was using for this photo. In this review they call this Leica Elmarit 60 mm f2.8 lens for a soulful engineer. I think it is quite fitting to this photo which I actually think have some soul to it. What do you think?

Having dropped the ballast overnight, 70810 sits silently at Alvechurch station, with fellow classmate 70814 on the opposite end. Locos along the Redditch branch, aside from the test train, are a rarity, with these two being the first Class 70s on the branch, to my knowledge.
This is an old one from the vault. He was a regular personality who rode his tricycle fitted with a mock-up steam engine around the ByWard Market. Haven't seen him around for over 5yrs.
Note: Rocky Mountain is at the old location of ByWard Market.

I went for a bike ride this morning and passed the site of the old Totley Tunnel Box around the same time as an engineers train having run from the Huddersfield area. First time I've seen the new livery in action.

On August 31st, 2023, well known railroader Mike Del Vecchio passed away after a battle with cancer. Although I didn't know Mike too well personally, I never heard a bad word spoken about him. Seen here is him posing as the engineer on #4109 during the United Railroad Historical Society's photo shoot in Boonton.

Winter presents all kinds of interesting challenges as a photographer. The cold, snow, and ice all provide risks and rewards. I decided to brave those elements recently and hiked through a foot of powder to the top of a ridge near Durango, Colorado. My reward was quite special. The last light of the day kissed the top of 12,968 ft. Engineer Mountain while the soft pink light at the end of the day illuminated the snow below in Animas Valley.

The engineer of the OL-3 has just fired up C430 #431 and is performing his inspection at the Western New York & Pennsylvania shops in Olean. There are only 5 C430s still in existence, and the WNYP/LA&L family owns 4 of them. Standing by are RS3M #406 and various M636s, along with the railroad's lone C630M and M630. With no train over the mountain to the NS interchange that day, we had to settle for OL-1 and OL-3. Scenes like this will soon be a memory as the WNYP converts to EMD power. Many of the 6 axle units, and the RS3M, have already been sold off.
