Grain moves became more common through Cartier when the Soo Locks and St. Lawrence Seaway was closed in the winter due to ice, That put more trains across Northern Ontario in the worst possible weather. Westbound grain empty 301 rolls into Cartier just after sun rise on February 21, 1992 with 5406 and 5402. The big fuel tank ex QNS&L SD's stood out in CPR's huge fleet of EMD's. Yes it was cold!

Empty shops and business premises are a common sight on UK High Streets, but many vacancies are relatively short lived - the shops are soon in use again although in these difficult times, the new business only have a limited life.
This collection portrays retail outlets that have been empty long-term, some for many years. In the past, all these have housed thriving businesses. Yet now, for some reason, they are empty and some are falling into a state of disrepair and dilapidation.
Each has its own story to tell. Some are completely empty, others seem to have stopped trading suddenly and appear like the Marie-Celeste, still with stock in the windows. In many cases, we can tell easily from the faded signage what business last operated from the shop. Others are a complete mystery with faded blinds or shutters and all signs removed.

Empty pens, empty barn. Empty barns deteriorate the quickest when they are not used. No matter our age, having a purpose and a reason to keep busy every day is vital for our physical and mental health.
Old summer's shoots. I found out I really like to shoot empty places. Kinda melancholic, I know.

An LKAB ore empty heads east near Søsterbekk Station. The former Norddal trestle in the background was bypassed in the late 1980s as the weight of the ore trains became too much for the structure. Interestingly enough the new alignment the train is on breaks off inside the mountain on the left near the end of the ore train.
With traffic projected to increase to 40+ trains a day on this line in the next decade or so, the old alignment may again see trains when a second main track is constructed from Kiruna to Narvik.

For various reason these last few years we haven't got to the beach until June or even July, despite living so close. So we made a family resolution to go a bit earlier this year - and our reward for most of our walk was an empty beach, seals and Moominmamma practicing her silkie moves when the waves came in too far :-)
