Empty shops and business premises are a common sight on UK High Streets, but many vacancies are relatively short lived - the shops are soon in use again although in these difficult times, the new business may only have a limited life.
This collection portrays retail outlets that in most instances have been empty long-term, some for many years, some for shorter periods of time. In the past, all these have housed thriving businesses. Yet now, they are empty with many falling into a state of disrepair and dilapidation.
Each has its own story to tell. Some are completely empty, others seem to have stopped trading suddenly and appear like the Marie-Celeste, still with stock in the windows. In many cases, we can tell easily from the old signage what business last operated from the shop. Others are a complete mystery with faded blinds or shutters and all signs removed.

This simple yet powerful memorial stands in Plac Bohaterow Getta or Ghetto Heroes Square as a lasting reminder of the persecution of Jewish people during the Second World War. The 70 bronze chairs are scattered around the square, symbolising loss and absence. A number of the chairs are at bus stops to be used by people, highlighting that anyone can be a victim.
Small stones are placed by people who visit Jewish graves in an act of remembrance or respect for the deceased.

The History of the Ohio State Reformatory:
"The cornerstone laid on November 4, 1886 evolved into this magnificent Chateauesque structure. Cleveland architect Levi T. Scofield designed the Ohio State Reformatory using a combination of three architectural styles; Victorian Gothic, Richardsonian Romanesque and Queen Anne. This was done to encourage inmates back to a "rebirth" of their spiritual lives. The architecture itself inspired them to turn away from their sinful lifestyle, and toward repentance
The Reformatory doors were opened to its first 150 young offenders in September 1896. After housing over 155,000 men in its lifetime, the doors to the prison closed December 31, 1990.
Today the Ohio State Reformatory Historic Site receives visitors from all over the world. Every year tourists, movie buffs, thrill seekers and paranormal investigators walk through the halls of this majestic structure.

That's a photograph project and the idea is to hunt 100 photos and match them for given titles. I'm doing the list in random order.

Found in my yard under a great 40' (12m) red maple tree... Glad nobody was around when it fell from above. Though I do recall getting stung as I rushed about cutting the grass earlier this week.

It's not often that you find this part of the Renaissance Center almost completely empty. For those wondering; No, I did not edit the people out.
This is the view toward Canada from the upper level of the rear atrium. I think adding this was the best change GM made when they purchased the building.
In post-apocalyptic dramas the urban landscape is always littered with abandoned crumbling buildings.

Milwaukee Intermodal Station seems to embody the ambitions and dreams of passenger rail advocates in this country. Its huge trainshed and five-ish tracks are far outsized for current service levels, with the Hiawatha Service only using Track 0 (yes, zero, not 1), and Track 1 (or really 2) only seeing use when the eastbound Empire Builder arrives while a Hiawatha run is laying over. Over on track "4", Charter Steel's private varnish is almost always present. I wonder if their passengers use the usually-silent escalators and walkway from the station house, or if they're shuttled in limos or whatever, from the access road west of the trainshed so as not to mix with the plebians. Anyway, should sensible heads eventually prevail, (ha) Milwaukee is ready for additional passenger service.
