Near the Arizona/New Mexico border, DPUs bring up the rear of an empty hopper train. The headend has all but disappeared from view behind the rock in the distance with the only visible evidence of it being the orange cab of the trailing unit in the lead consist. March 30, 2017.
My birdfeeders have been taken down as our state DNR (Department of Natural Resources) has found many birds have died due to some illness. These birds have been affected in our county as well as several others. To help contain this illness (and until the DNR can determine the cause) residents of the state have been asked to take down their bird feeders and thoroughly clean them.
This is one of my 'hooks' where two of our feeders were hung. We also had a rain shower advance, so this photo shows the comparison of emptiness as well as threatening despair.

Empty coal "buckets" (Bethgons) are headed West past Rose Yard in Altoona, PA on NS's Pittsburgh Line. There are windmills on the hill in the background, too.

An empty eastbound unit grain train (aka "an earthworm" - so called, because of the way they crawl across the desert landscape) passes a westbound container train heading to the west coast.
This train is heading back to the grain producing regions of the American Midwest and moved westward with a load of cereal grain for export that was perhaps loaded on a ship at the Port of Stockton.

In the southbound train lead by WC 2252 was this healthy cut of brand new gondola cars. Gons lead a pretty hard life and are usually pretty beat up so it was a little startling to see some hot off the press. The mystery to me is why these cars would be headed south empty (apparently never loaded). At this time paint ore was being loaded periodically at Thomaston on the White Pine Sub and the switch component company in Ashland may have been in operation but the gons they used had a large steel rack mounted inside. I can only guess these cars were misrouted or temporarily stored somewhere as I can't think of any place in Ashland that would have been performing some kind of minimal retrofit on new cars. Anyway, if someone wants to model some factory fresh gondolas and detail the interiors instead of adding the ubiquitous scratches and dents, here is your picture. August 28, 1995.
