A boisterous crowd of hundreds of educators, union activists and community supporters rallied on January 17 in support of New Bedford High School educators, many of whom could lose their jobs under a “turnaround” plan proposed by Superintendent Pia Durkin.
Description: Educator and founder of the Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, North Carolina, Charlotte Eugenia Hawkins Brown was active in the National Council of Negro Women, the N.C. Teachers Association, etc., and was the first black woman to serve on the national board of the YWCA. She lectured and wrote about black women, education, and race relations.

Every year, the College of Education hosts a back-to-school thank-you reception for Pullman-area educators, in particular the Pullman School District, with whom the college has had a special relationship for a number of years. This year's event took place at South Fork on August 22.
The annual conference for the Texas Association of Fire Educators was held in Corpus Christi Feb.10–12. Texas A&M Forest Service personnel were on hand to showcase new 3D wildfire simulation technology to attendees.
On October 23, educators from throughout the region were invited to attend the highly anticipated AVID Showcase presented by John E. Dwyer Technology Academy, the only school in New Jersey scheduled to demonstrate its very successful AVID Program during the 2018-2019 school year.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a research-based instructional model that encourages students to prepare for and participate in a challenging college preparatory curriculum. AVID Secondary equips teachers and schools with what they need to help students succeed on a path to college and career success. Dwyer Technology Academy students take the AVID elective, a one period course each day offering the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses.
The showcase allowed for select AVID schools to demonstrate the elective to educators and share best educational practices. Educators who attended the showcase observed an AVID Elective class, saw and learned about the key components of AVID, discussed implementing AVID with Dwyer Technology Academy school administrators and teachers, heard from Dwyer Technology Academy AVID students, and reviewed data and results from AVID students from Dwyer Technology Academy.
The annual Retiree Reception was held at 4:00 pm April 25 at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts on Patterson Street. VLREA invited all teachers at the public schools in Valdosta, Lowndes and Echols counties and educators at VSU, GMC and Wiregrass. The reception is held to honor each of the local public educators who are retiring at the end of the school year or those who have retired during the present school year. The reception for retirees has been held since the early 1990s.

On April 20, Pennsylvania educators' visited Fort Belvoir, first stop was the Family Housing Welcome Center. The U.S. Army Harrisburg Recruiting Battalion sponsored 24 Pennsylvania educators' and community leaders' during April 18-21, 2011 for the 2011 U.S. Army Educators' and Community Leaders' Tour to the Military District of Washington including visits to the Pentagon, Fort Myer and Fort Belvoir. Dominique Christina, Afro-Latina mother, licensed educator and essayist, addresses students and members of the community during a poetry reading and performance at the 23rd Social Justice Summit at Humboldt State University.
Dominique is a two-time Women of the World Slam Champion (2012 and 2014). In 2013, Dominique won the Southern Fried Poetry Slam Championship and the National Underground Poetry Slam Individual Championship. She is presently the only person to win Women of the World twice. Dominique's family was deeply tied to the Civil Rights Movement. She is presently working on a Young Adult Novel for Random House/Knopf.
The National Association of Cuban American Educators (NACAE) awarded "Educator of the Year 2012" Dr. Modesto A. Maidique, President Emeritus of Florida International University (FIU), Alva H. Chapman Jr. Eminent Scholar Chair in Leadership, Executive Director of the Center for Leadership and Professor of Management, Faculty of Business Administration, all at FIU. Dr. Maidique was FIU President for 23 years, the first Cuban-American university president in the U.S.
