To loosen each dread I initially soaked my daughter's hair in conditioner, an entire bottle's worth. Then I rinsed all the conditioner out and unraveled each dreadlock with a fork. It took over 2 weeks to take them all out.

They all want to achieve that certain look.

Early morning photo with not quite the right settings. Compared with the last time I posted a full back shot, the wispy ends seem less feathery.

On the way to baby dreads all over again... it's taken nine months from deciding to leave my fringe to it's own devices, to having it start going wiggly. I reckon I'll eventually get four pencil-sized locks out of it with any remaining wispy bit being sucked into the surrounding mature locks, but I still don't think it's long enough to start dreading yet.

A soggy walk with the dog, hood down and actually enjoying the rain for once. It's not like it'll make my hair look any worse than it already is!

Typical cold Spring weather - windy, wild but with the odd ray of sunshine to make you think things are warming up.

Directions Rose Red over the faded Vermillion - decided it was time for a shift in colour.

I can still clip it back when it needs to be a bit tidier, but the shorter lengths on top wave about like antenna. I like it.

The tails are still very long and loose, but there's a good inch of tight knotting going on. The ends will catch up when they're ready.

A few people on the DT forums had been posting pictures of scanned dreadlocks to good effect, so I decided to join in the fun. This is what my eleven month old dreadlocks look like close up.

One month in and a couple of the locs at the front now insist on snaking down over my forehead. The one at the top is fattening up nicely.

This is from early 2001, about 3 years after starting my second set of dreadlocks. They were about 10-12 inches long. The front of my hair is undreaded, that's my "bang". I like it because it can alter my look depending on how I feel, I can style it in little twists, cornrow it, wrap it around a couple of locks and pull it back, fluff it up into an afro ridge. I have very dark hair hair, my natural hair color is almost jet black. I get asked a lot if I have dyed my locks this dark, to my surprise. Nope, this is my natural hair color.

*Amended 2007* I have dyed my hair recently as my locks were lighter due to streaking from the sun after an overly enthusiastic lemon-session last summer, LOL. I picked blue-black but as far as I can tell it came out just jet-black. Humph
