the conversation stops for a moment. he exhales. the smoke is a fleeting, grey ghost in the sharp light. his eyes are wide, telling a story that his mouth has paused. every line on his face is a map of a life, of laughter, of worry. he is a character from a novel you have not yet read. the light carves him from the darkness, a temporary sculpture of expression and smoke. in a second, the smoke will vanish, the expression will change. but the photograph holds the story, just for a moment.
the evening sun hung low in the city of arts and sciences, casting long shadows over the polished tiles of valencia. the cyclists came silently, their wheels gliding through light and shadow, their outlines stretching far behind them. the modern arches and geometric lines framed the scene, the architecture as much a part of the moment as the figures in motion. the sun, piercing through the skyline, broke into a starburst, bathing the world in sharp contrasts. there was no sound but the hum of tires and the whisper of a fading day. it was a fleeting moment—of rhythm, reflection, and the quiet poetry of movement.
the steps stretch forward, leading to something unseen. a man walks up, his reflection trailing behind, as if a second self is stuck in another time. the building looms above, its sharp metallic lines carving into the sky. the shadows fracture, stretching across the ground like cracks in reality. light and darkness in perfect tension.
he came out of the dark to be seen. one eye holds the light. the rest he keeps.

two shadows drift into the blinding calm, swallowed by light, traced by concrete ribs that echo silence. the architecture breathes like a living cathedral—empty, precise, timeless.

A lone vessel carves its way through the calm waters of Geirangerfjord beneath towering mountains dressed in the colors of autumn. Captured from the heights above Møllsbygda in October 2024, the scene combines golden foliage, deep blue water, and the first traces of snow on the surrounding peaks. The low autumn sun casts dramatic rays across the landscape, while the boat's curved wake adds a sense of movement to one of Norway's most iconic fjord vistas. Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its steep cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and extraordinary natural beauty.
Fun fact: Geirangerfjord reaches depths of more than 250 meters (820 feet), while the surrounding mountains rise over 1,000 meters almost directly from the water, creating one of the world's most dramatic fjord landscapes.

For the Macro Mondays challenge "Hard Light" (February 18th 2019)
Playing with the lighting to give different effects is great fun. One of my favourites is what I call 'dramatic light' which I hope is the same as the 'Hard light' of the challenge. Using a small torch and very low ambient light it gives lovely long, dark shadows.
Happy Macro Monday! ;o)

The simple joys of Gram Bangla. This environmental portrait highlights the resourcefulness and quiet resilience of rural childhood. Stripped of color, the image draws immediate focus to the young girl's expressive eyes and her humble, handmade toy, framed naturally by the strong, textured trunks of the surrounding village trees.
The one I posted on here at the time contains my silhouette with the backlighting, which I like a lot but this one I found with the poppies in the foreground I think is my favourite of the two and isn't on my Flickr account.
Shot in Norfolk in late 2015 just outside Tacolneston, during a spell of crazy evening light this double rainbow appeared during a rainstorm, it's still raining during this shot, it was just a case of finding somewhere to shoot it before it vanished that would do it justice, this was the result, in the middle of a wheat field, choosing a group of poppies that were dotted about to use for the foreground. Got a good soaking taking this but strangely enough didn't really care at the time!

'VALENTINES DAY - SHARE THE LOVE.'
I thought this might be an appropriate posting for 14th February - (with some stretch of the imagination).
The two Grey Heron chicks had eyes only for each other when I made the image back in 2016. I think their intense gazes were part of sibling bonding behaviour in the confined nest space, rather than true love!
You can see a considerable size difference between the chicks, denoting different hatching dates. Their dishevelled, scruffy appearances made them extremely endearing subjects.
a man walks through silver rainfall, his shadow stretching like memory across the glistening piazza. light cuts low between ancient walls, catching each drop midair, while the city breathes quietly in the pause between storm and sun.

Captured with a DJI Air 3S drone from a vantage point in Vezzi Portio, Liguria. This aerial perspective looks down upon the town of Finale Ligure nestled in the foreground, bordering the vast, deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Beyond Finale Ligure, a series of dark, rugged mountain ridges covered in dense Mediterranean maquis recede into the distance, with smaller coastal towns tucked along the shoreline under a vast, moody sky. The atmosphere is defined by dramatic storm clouds, with a single, powerful ray of sun breaking through, creating a brilliant pool of light on the water and the distant coast—a captivating moment of contrast between shadow and light.
in the depths of the old city, a silhouette walks the tightrope between shadow and salvation. above, the sun explodes into geometry, marking a path that cuts through silence and stone.
in the narrow streets of valencia, light carves the world into fragments. she walks alone, draped in memories, her shadow long and stretched, reaching for the past. benches stand empty, waiting for conversations that never happened. the air is still. the sun is merciless. time moves, but she doesn’t.
The station becomes a stage, the sun a spotlight — and she, unknowingly, the lead.

Santa María della Salute is one of the most important religious buildings in Venice. Its striking dome is depicted in most of the city’s postcards.
Salute, as it is commonly known, was founded in 1631. The basilica was built to commemorate the end of a terrible outbreak of the plague that began in 1630, and killed a large portion of the Veneto population. It was dedicated to Our Lady of Health (Salute in Italian).
taken after sun set and after getting a boat the the Lido by mistake but a glorious sunset swiftly followed by two nights of rain so very lucky
shot on the R5 with the nifty fifty thats it, well happy

a fleeting moment on the streets of valencia. the glow of
afternoon light carves her out from the shadows, her blue bag and red flower almost defiant against the black. a portrait of individuality moving through the mundane, vivid and unapologetic.
From a second-floor terrace in Ibi, looking south. Always south — toward the mountains, toward the long downhill slope that leads, eventually, to the Alicante coastline and the Mediterranean beyond. Twenty-four hours of light, condensed into six seconds: dawn feeling its way through the pines, midday asserting itself with characteristic Mediterranean lack of subtlety, then the slow withdrawal of afternoon into dusk. The trees, as trees do, simply stand there and let it happen. One day. Blink and you'll miss it — which, in a sense, is the point.

The last warmth of the day has vanished, and blue hour settles gently over Hamar and Lake Mjøsa.
Broken ice drifts slowly across the surface, forming fragile mosaics where winter loosens its grip, one crack at a time. Above, a heavy sky stretches wide, layered with clouds that hold on to the final glow of the horizon.
Lake Mjøsa is Norway’s largest lake, extending more than 100 kilometers from Lillehammer in the north to Minnesund in the south. Here, along the eastern shoreline at Hamar, the vast inland water mirrors both sky and season—caught between cold and release, silence and motion. The city remains almost absent, reduced to distant hints, while nature takes full command of the scene.
This is not drama in motion, but drama in pause—where time slows, sound disappears, and light becomes something you feel rather than see.
Fun fact: Lake Mjøsa is Norway’s largest lake by surface area and volume, and in colder winters large parts of it can freeze—an increasingly rare sight as winters grow milder.
