The fortress stood as a silent witness to centuries of forgotten lore, its reflection trembling upon the mirrored surface of the dark lake where lilies slept in eternal stillness. In this fleeting hour, the world seemed to hold its breath, caught between the dying embers of the day and the encroaching mystery of the night.
At the heart of this gilded realm, the weeping willow bowed its weary head, its long branches reaching out like emerald lace toward the water's edge. It appeared as a guardian spirit, rooted in the earth yet belonging to the heavens, shielding the secrets of the manor from the prying eyes of time. This was not merely a sunset; it was the final, majestic chord of a symphony written in light and shadow, a moment where the veil between reality and legend grew thin.
he rode straight through it. the signs had opinions about who belonged on the road. he had a helmet and a plan. the rules cast their shadows. he didn’t notice. that was the whole point.
For years, the Engelsley ridge had been visible above Altenahr – a wooded slope, a wall of rock, part of a familiar landscape. Only that morning did it become a path.
The series follows the transition from first light at the Schwarzes Kreuz and the sunstar at the Teufelsloch to the narrow, unsecured ridge. At the most difficult sections, the camera stayed on its strap. Both hands belonged on the rock.
In the end, the path did not lead back into the valley, but over a wall and into Are Castle.

Seit Jahren lag der Engelsley-Grat sichtbar über Altenahr – als bewaldeter Rücken, als Felswand, als Teil einer vertrauten Landschaft. Erst an diesem Morgen wurde er zu einem Weg.
Die Serie folgt dem Übergang vom ersten Licht am Schwarzen Kreuz über den Blendenstern im Teufelsloch bis auf den schmalen, ungesicherten Grat. An den schwierigsten Stellen blieb die Kamera am Gurt. Dort gehörten beide Hände an den Fels.
Am Ende führte der Weg nicht zurück ins Tal, sondern über eine Mauer auf die Burg Are.

Yesterday, 10/20/15, I went on a walk in the Westchase area of Tampa, which is in the midst of a beautiful nature preserve. The moment I passed by this beautiful river winding its way into the thick forest, I was inspired by the enchanting light that peered through the trees and reflected magically on the water. I knew I had to come back to get a shot that reflected this magic!
Normally I shoot my landscapes around sunset, but I felt for this setting a sunrise shot would provide a better angle for the light. So I got up early the next morning and returned to the site with my camera gear. At sunrise, the light was not shining right, but I started playing with different settings & some long exposures which made the light in the stream look like snakes.
Then, as the sun rose, some magical light started to make its way through the trees, lighting up the trees in the foreground as if illuminating the entranceway of a holy sanctuary. The only problem - I ran out of space on my 30 GB camera card, with no spare with me [is there a time-worn lesson here? :) ] So quickly, I had to delete some old shots from the card, then take some new shots, & then delete more shots when the card filled up again, etc etc etc [many times]. With a bit of muttering under my breath, I finally came away with about 80 shots, and the light at the end was the best. The last time my card read "full" and I was about to delete more shots so I could continue shooting, I decided I already got my shot so I packed it up and called it a day, leaving the shoot very inspired despite the drama with my camera card.
That evening, I loaded my pics onto my computer, and post processing went unusually fast; thus I was able to post the pic that same day.
I shot this with a tripod to maintain a small aperture (so that everything would be in-focus) and a long shutter speed (so that I could keep a low ISO, to reduce noise). There was very little natural light present.
f/9, 6/10 s, ISO-100, 70mm, 720nm monochrome infrared.

On the particular side with the arches, only the two ends have these curtains. I really liked this because it reminded me of curtains and gave me a theatrical feel. A curtain that opens to take you on a journey through space and time.
