Sometimes, beauty appears in silence.
A soft rainbow cuts across the valley below, barely visible beneath heavy skies. The slopes still glisten from the storm, while an alpine hut holds its quiet place above the forest.
Seen from the northern slopes above the Zillertal, this frame captures a fleeting moment – when shadow and color meet, and the storm gives way to grace.
Yanire in a dark studio portrait, her hair caught in motion against a deep black background for a bold, dramatic look. The off-shoulder black top, delicate pearl necklace and sculpted light create an elegant, fashion-inspired mood that highlights her feminine lines and confident presence.

I was looking for photographic subjects to exploit when I went with my wife to a yard sale put on by members of the Lakeside Historical Society, and found this wonderful old hat. This is just as I found with dust, creases and many flaws that add character.
Lighting stuff: I wanted side lighting because that creates the shadows that reveal textures and shapes. I hand held a YN560 in an 8.6 inch Lastolite softbox above and at camera left of the hat, pointing down towards the center. Fill light came from a large mirror at camera right. The flash in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.
I'm calling this a still life, since I don't know what else to call it. Other still life images that I've attempted are in my Still Life album. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157635247182331/

I had half a day to spare yesterday, and it looked like offering the most promising conditions for photography before Friday, so I took a chance on an afternoon back at Birmingham.
As the forecast predicted, the sun was very much in and out (in fact, much more in than out for the first few hours, and when it was out there was invariably very little going on). However, what for me was very much the star movement took place in some truly stunning - if highly-improbable-looking just 30 seconds earlier - light.

Amelia shines in this electrifying portrait, blending neon hues of cobalt blue and magenta. Captured in St. Louis, her confident pose and striking red boots create a bold, unforgettable statement. This is where fashion meets art in a kaleidoscope of light and color.

A voice carved from shadow.
Suspended between silence and cry,
this dark figure stands like a guardian of forgotten skies.
Not just a bird —
but a symbol of instinct, presence, and untamed truth.
In the stillness, even a whisper feels like thunder.
This is the color version of the previous post in my photostream. The lighting is a little bit different because I was playing around with the position of the lights in attempt to get a "dramatic" look. I'm actually not sure if it's possible to get a dramatic look to a hibiscus picture. Bigger looks better, here, and you can see it that way if you press "L".
Strobist info: One Sb600 with a grid to light the "probe" and a SB700 in a softbox camera right for fill light. The strobes were triggered by the pop up flash on my D90 in commander mode.
Other plants and flowers that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my Strobe Lit Plant set. In the description, I list resources that I've used to learn how to light with off camera flash. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157628079460544/...
I took this photo during my trip to Belize this past December. We had to wake up hella early to catch a ferry back to the mainland from Ambergris Caye. Watching the sun come up from the water taxi was nothing less than stunning!

Last night I got out to shoot with a few friends: Tamara, Brianna, and Jeanne. Troopers for working on light painting on a cold and windy nighttime.
I learned a heap about light painting with Tam, I'd never really tried this before. Next time I think I can pre-visualize much better for a set up, and collaborate better for more powerful images. Hopefully!
Thanks goes out to the three of them for working together. Much fun.
I spent as a guide, taking a friend on a circular route out of Edale and up one of my favourite ascents in the Peak District; Crowden Clough.
The weather was very dynamic during the day, quick moving patchy cloud casted big shadows that moved across the landscape, with bright dappled light accompanying it.
This shot was taken looking across to Crowden Tower, a rock outcrop that sits at the top of the clough, which was catching the light as it danced across it.
