Had some fun with a model friend trying to recreate some Audrey Hepburn portraits the other day. This one is my favorite from the day!

Broadleys Gate farm, near Newbiggin, Teesdale, lit by a brief break in the dark cloud cover.
Had the opportunity to photograph local Bay Area artist, Amiel " Summer Breeze " Maquilan, today. Unfortunately, the weather today was horrible in the Bay Area with lots of rain. So we kept the shoot indoors.
Summer Breeze is a down to earth musician and a pleasure to photograph. I also had a great time shooting with my brother in law, DreamWorldPhotoArt, today. Thanks to the both of you for a fun afternoon. Make sure to check out his music. This kid is very talented.

A wintry scene in the Hudes Hope, high in the North Pennines AONB near Middleton in Teesdale. The small building on the valley floor is the Grade II listed remains of the Marl Beck mine shop.

The info: Every time I come home to Southern California via the Grapevine and Interstate 5, I notice how beautiful the rolling hills of the San Emigdio mountains are as you approach the Tejon Pass from the north--and also note that it's a tough spot to get a good pic, and I never seem to time it when the light is really good. This weekend, however, storm clouds moving over the mountains in late afternoon cast some nice dramatic light, and the hills have begun to green up (as they do in the winter) from all the rain we've had recently. I found a good spot where I could take aim at the edges of Tejon Ranch, and made the most of the light before continuing on home.

A common sight throughout much of Iceland during June/July is large fields of vibrant purple nootka, or Alaskan lupine. The flower looks at home in this landscape, but was actually introduced in 1945 to lowland areas in the southwest as a means to add nitrogen to the soil and also to function as an anchor for organic matter. Lupine has since flourished here, spreading to other regions like a wildfire, in almost effortless competition with the other species already in residence. Critics of this initiative view the flower as an invasive species that is threatening low-growing mosses and other native plants. Erosion is the gravest environmental problem Iceland faces today. Foliage loss, and ultimately soil erosion, occurs across the island, due largely to the extreme conditions of the environment, in particular the high winds. Some cite the free-ranging sheep as an added threat, with their constant grazing on already scant plant growth. Measures have been taken to encourage new growth that would create anchors for the remaining soil, but these approaches have been controversial.
We all have photos in our mind we want to take, way before we actually visit the place. Lupine fields were definitely one of those visions for me before going to Iceland. After arrival to Iceland I had a chance to photograph some fields with reasonably good light before this shot, however when we stopped at this scene, I knew it was a winner for me. It was bit adventurous as we had to cross an electric fence (functioning) to get to this field, for that we have been rewarded with amazing light, misty mood, beautiful colors in the sky and nearly no wind which allowed me to take 10s exposure without blurring lupine flowers.

The River Balder (lower left) meets the River Tees at Cotherstone, as seen from the Tees Valley Way long distance footpath. A morning of damp and drizzle but also with patches of watery sunshine creating a dramatic scene under a dark sky.
Sometimes emotion doesn’t need motion, it lingers, still and steady, in the quiet gaze of a single moment. This portrait captures the calm defiance that lives behind the eyes, the kind that doesn’t shout or break, but holds its ground softly, like light against shadow.
Shot as part of my ongoing fine art portrait series, this image explores resilience, identity, and inner stillness through minimalism and tone. The texture of light, the grain of the skin, the shadow that breathes around the form, together they create not just a photograph, but a conversation between strength and silence.
This rose was given to us by friends who know their way around a rose garden. They grew it and cared for it, and all I had to do was light it and photograph it. Not bad.
Strobist info: The main light was from an SB600 in a softbox, camera right at 5 o'clock, and the fill light was a SB700 in a softbox at about 7 o'clock. Both in manual mode and triggered by the pop up flash on my D90 in Commander mode.
