Gettysburg.
The Civil War from 1861-64 was the most tragic and momentous event in American history. It had its origins in the economic and agricultural differences between the North and the South which were exacerbated by different views about the morality of black slavery. Once Abraham Lincoln (a Republican) was elected in November 1860 as the next President to be inaugurated in February 1861 the fears of the South could no longer be allayed by compromise and logical thinking. South Carolina, always the most firebrand and radical of the Southern states seceded almost immediately. So technically the Civil War was about secession and whether the constitution gave any state the right to secede rather than it being about slavery. But the expansion (not the mere existence) of slavery was the issue behind secession. Sth Carolina was joined by other southern states and they quickly formed the confederacy with Jefferson Davis as President. Lincoln wanted to avoid war. He chose not to be the aggressor but as an able lawyer and great humanist he warned that he would defend the property of the US. When the Confederates (Grey Coats or Rebels) fired on Fort Sumner in the harbour of Charleston, the capital of South Carolina in April 1861 the war began. The north had the advantage of a much bigger population, better rail system, almost all of the industry in America, and money, but they struggled for four years to win the war. Many of the battles were in the Border States near Washington DC where the southern state of Virginia basically abuts the northern states of Pennsylvania and Maryland. (But Maryland really had no choice but to join with the north as it was placed under military control by Lincoln. After all the capital, Washington DC is almost surrounded by Maryland.) One of the great battles that occurred in this region was the Battle of Gettysburg.
Despite the advantages of the North it lost most of the battles in the first couple of years of the Civil War. The Yankees could not defeat the great southern General Robert E Lee. That is why Lincoln kept changing his generals. The turning point was probably the Battle of Gettysburg which raged from 1-4th July 1863. General Meade led the Union forces in their bloody defeat of the Confederates under Lee at Gettysburg. Around 163,000 men faced each other in the battles. At the end of the last day, Confederate causalities - dead, wounded and missing were 28,000 (out of 75,000 troops) and the Union casualties were 23,000 (out of 88,000 troops. ) After the battle General Lee had to retreat to the South quickly and leave the Confederate dead on the battle field. These were incredibly high death tolls for any battle. Is it any wonder the Americans still feel so deeply about the Civil War? By the end of the Civil War, over 620,000 men had been killed and nearly 300,000 wounded- many of them maimed for the rest of their lives: - a total of almost 1 million men. The death toll from the Civil War was greater than the combined US toll for World Wars One and Two. A total of16.47% of all troops were killed in the Civil War- a very high proportion. This compares badly with American involvement in say World War One- 2.46% of troops killed, or World War Two- 2.52% of troops killed. The Civil War was a huge tragedy.
After the battle Lincoln went to dedicate a memorial to the men who had lost their lives in this great battle in November of 1863. The Gettysburg Address is a remarkably short speech, for a politician, and is considered by many to be one of the finest speeches in the English language. In just over two minutes, Lincoln invoked the principles of human equality espoused by the Declaration of Independence and redefined the Civil War as a struggle not merely for the Union, but as "a new birth of freedom" that would bring true equality to all of its citizens, and that would also create a unified nation in which states' rights were no longer dominant.
At Gettysburg we will see battlefield, memorials and the interpretive centre with its dioramas and displays. Below is a map of the town and surrounding battlefields and memorials.
Abraham Lincoln 1809-1865. The Republican Party emerged in American in 1854 to oppose the EXPANSION of slavery into the new western territories. In the 1858 congressional elections Lincoln made his most famous statement:
“A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other."
Four nominees stood to be the Republican candidate for the 1860 Presidential election and Lincoln was chosen as the Republican candidate. He won the election and became the first anti slavery president from one section (the North) party to win an election. During the campaign the Democrat Party split into a northern and southern democrat parties with different candidates. Lincoln kept a low profile after the election and because of assassination threats and safety concerns in Baltimore he was secretly taken to Washington DC in disguise on 23 February 1861 to be inaugurated as President on 4th March. Once the November election results were known, Sth Carolina and then other southern states seceded. Lincoln’s training as a small town lawyer held him in good stead as president. He studied the constitution closely and developed his legalistic arguments. The South had no right to secede. The constitution was a binding contract and no state could unilaterally secede. He would not attack the South but he would defend the property of the US in the rebelling (seceding) Southern states and the posts would be delivered. Historians argue that Lincoln chose to avoid war, and not be the aggressor, but the South had little room for manoeuvring out of war. The South began the war at Fort Sumter. Despite Lincoln’s expert handling of the military aspects of the war, his choice of generals and his handling of the affairs of state, he was unpopular with many Republicans as he was not radical enough. Lincoln stood as an independent candidate for the US presidential elections of 1864 and won, this time not as a Republican but as the leader for the National Union Party. Perhaps Lincoln’s most memorable act was the Emancipation Proclamation of 1st January 1863 which set slaves free in the rebelling states. (It required a constitutional amendment to abolish slavery in all states.) This act brought former slaves into the War in both the North and South; it bought strong alliances with European powers, especially France and England who could not support a pro-slavery nation ( the Confederacy had tried to get France’s financial backing) ; and it turned the war from a war about secession and constitutional issues into a war about slavery. Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth 5 days after General Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865 thus ending the Civil War.

Summer courses for high school kids constitute the backbone of our summer activities. Our summer program has a two-tier purpose: a) English teaching as the focus of our attention b) summer activities including skating, swimming, horse riding, trips by bus, and other activities. Our students enjoy both the humane and academic nature of our trips.
Housewives are usually good participants, they form social gatherings during their free time in the mornings. They get to know each other and benefit from their special conversational course with an American teacher. They feel they belong to a women’s club in which they discuss many things, including cooking recipes and most important of all fashion in English.
Adults and businessmen are welcome all the year round, and private organizations get the lion’s share. This is where they need us the most. We extend our technical assistance to them, vocational and educational expertise as well. This is a mutual cooperation so that they can fulfill their objectives.
It’s been years now since we have been teaching English to make communication easier for all of us. Now the time has come for non-Arabs to learn Arabic. The MLC has just completed an Arabic course to make it easier for foreigners to study Arabic. Please pay us a visit at the MLC, and I am sure you will not be disappointed. Certainly, you will not only love it, but you will enjoy it.
We always look forward to seeing our graduates make it through colleges & universities. Now, It is a requirement that all graduates in Jordan pass the TOEFL or the IELTS in order to obtain their degrees. The MLC is committed to our future generations to make it possible for them to pass one of these international tests. It’s through us (MLC) that they make their dreams come true.
"SVR Bridgnorth - Loco 75069 passes BR Class 20 20048 as it approaches Bridgnorth"
Trains from different eras of technology but only 4 years apart in actual age!!
BR Class 20 No. 20048 was built at English Electric's Vulcan Foundry as Works no 2770 and entered service at Hornsey Depot (34B) on 31 December 1959 under its original number D8048.
Loco 75069 was completed at Swindon in September 1955 and was equipped with a double chimney in October 1960.
As one of the batch of locomotives allocated to the Southern Region it was attached to a BR1B tender which was able to hold 4,750 gallons of water. This was because there were no water troughs on the Southern Region.
In 1959 the locomotive replaced a failed Standard class 5 locomotive, which had failed, on a Victoria to Ramsgate working with a load of ten coaches. Despite being ten minutes late at Chatham due to some subsequent fast running it arrived at Ramsgate only three minutes late.
It was withdrawn from service in September 1966 and sold for scrap to Woodham Brothers. It arrived at the scrapyard in Barry in May 1967 and remained there until March 1973.
It was saved from the scrapyard by The 75069 Fund who own the locomotive. It was diesel hauled from Barry to the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) and arrived at Bridgnorth in July 1974.
Work on restoring the 75069 began in earnest in 1977 following the return to steam of British Standard class 4 tank engine 80079. The locomotive was back in steam and operational in 1984.
Although a Southern machine, 75069 was painted in Brunswick green to coincide with celebrations of 150 years of the Great Western Railway in 1985.
75069 operated on the main line and in 1992 it attended the Ashford 150 celebrations.
75069 was out of service from 1994 for a number of years as it required an overhaul which started in 2013. The overhaul had been regarded as a lower priority than some of the other locomotives requiring attention at Bridgnorth.
The locomotive is planned to be back in service in late 2017 and be painted in authentic BR lined black livery for the first time in preservation.
In May 2017 the frames were re-wheeled and subsequently the motion was reassembled.
By the end of 2017 it was hoped that the locomotive would be back in traffic on the SVR in 2018. At this time extensive repair work to the boiler was still ongoing.
By May 2018 the locomotives rolling chassis was complete and ready for the boiler to be fitted which was expected to be done the following month. The hope then was that the locomotive which last ran in 1994 would be back in steam in July or August 2018.
By the middle of 2018 the boiler of the locomotive had been filled with water in readiness for a hydraulic test. After this had been completed the boiler was trial-fitted into the frames and clad
In August 2018 a fire was lit in the grate of the locomotive for an out of frames steam test. Following the successful completion of the test work started on cladding the boiler and reuniting it with the frames.
In December 2018 the locomotive underwent its first steam tests and light engine runs. Its first moves under its own steam for 25 years.
Having completed 300 miles whilst running in in December 2018 the locomotive entered traffic in February 2019. The total cost of the overhaul was estimated to be £900,000.
In July 2019 the locomotive was partially derailed when it struck a fallen tree whilst running light engine on the Severn Valley Railway. The only part of the locomotive derailed was the engine’s bogie. It was expected that the locomotive would be back in service September 2019.

After the Tour de France last year we have the new Tour de Yorkshire this year. This one came right through Slaithwaite, Passing within a mile or so of our house twice. I’m a bit ambivalent about watching cycling at the roadside, It’s a bit different down in France, in the Pyrenees or on the Champs Elysees in beautiful sunshine, soaking the atmosphere up. As a cyclist and photographer I’d been getting asked for ages where I was going to watch and photograph the TdY, the truth is, I wasn’t that bothered about it and didn’t have a plan until the actual day.
Sunday dawned with horrendous weather, very heavy rain pounding the house roof at 7.00AM, the radar picture showed a mass of slow moving rain heading west. We were going walking after coffee at Crumbles in Marsden and we sat the worst of the rain out until 10.00, it was drizzle by now, still a full waterproofs walk though. Home for a change and back out for more coffee and toast at the Merrie England and we were well placed for Scapegoat Hill to watch the race. We drove through Slaithwaite at 12.00 and it was deserted with about twenty people outside The Little Bridge wine bar. Tory had an outside bar setup for the day. Where was everybody?
We parked over Round Ings Road on the top of Scapegoat Hill. The sun was coming out and the sky was breaking to blue, fantastic, and what a change from this morning. People were heading to the top of Crimble Clough in their thousands, it was reminiscent of Holme Moss at the TdF last year. There was a great atmosphere, lots of people we knew out to watch, quite a few asking why we weren’t at the Little Bridge, I get a bit pissed off with this belief that we live in the wine bar, I have two drinks, three or four times a week in the Little Bridge – in the evening – and we are usually home by 9.00. I don’t set foot in a pub during the day, I prefer cafes for coffee and toast. At the wedding we went to someone asked why we weren’t in the Commercial – I never go in the Commercial, when I go out, I go out to eat, having a drink along the way is incidental to eating for me – get the message folks! It was looking like things were going to pan out perfectly. I wanted to get a spot up Waller Clough Road, the last bit of the climb out of Slaithwaite, with a clear view where I could get a slight side shot whilst the cars and bikes were still a distance away and not actually right next to me and have the cyclists lit from the front so they weren’t in deep shadow. It was going to be impossible on the higher slopes as it was packed and people were still arriving. I settled for the end of Highfield Road ( Moorside Edge) as it was quite wide. I didn’t think that the cyclists would pick much speed up here although it’s flattish just there, they would be getting a breather ready for the last bit of the climb. I got plenty of chance to check my gear and setting as the front running Police bikes came through at great speed, it’s very easy to get caught using a slightly slow shutter speed and not realise until after the event. The motorbikes were looking sharp. In the end I had around ten shots that missed focus and unusable, I’ve probably uploaded a couple of questionable ones. The cyclists came through together and there wasn’t any chance to pick individuals out, it was a case of firing away, making sure the focus was locked on to at least one cyclist.
When the race had passed it was a mass exodus. I had to get Jayne to Meltham for a wedding at 3.00PM so we didn’t linger. When we walked into Slaithwaite around 5.30 it was packed around every pub, the wine bar was surrounded by people singing and dancing, fortunately it was OK inside. Not a bad day. No mention of our area in the news and nothing shown on TV, they only showed the later part of the day. As I explained to people, it’s not football, cycling struggles to get TV coverage and it’s free to watch at the roadside, they don’t understand that there isn’t any money in it, it relies on sponsorship and in some cases – like football – wealthy individuals who want to own a team.
A different attempt at the osprey, this time taking the 'filtered' look with a bit less crop to try to get things proper.
This had much less noise nuking and color popping, since the 'faded' approach helped mask things the opposite way the other attempt did.
I think I prefer this one a bit more, even if its less bird-centric, as the old trestle kind of gives its own character to the image.

These two very different preserved Leyland coaches are seen here at The Bus & Coach Show, British Commercial Vehicle Museum, Leyland, on 18/03/2012. Nearest the camera is ex-Jersey Motor Transport, C15, a Leyland Lioness PLC1 that was first registered, in 03/1927, and used as a shooting brake for King George V and the Royal Household. Its Leyland body was rebuilt by Thurgood in 1938 as a 26 seat rear entrance coach for further service in Jersey where it was re-registered J8462. I think this is/was resident at the museum at the time of this photograph. A little further back is is preserved former Hutchison, Overtown, Scotland, EVD580, a Plaxton bodied Leyland Tiger PS1. Preserved in Bee Line, Hartlepool, livery, it was new to Hutchison, in 09/1949. It was latterly preserved in the livery of Wm. Low, Tomintoul, Scotland, an operator it worked for after Hutchison. © Peter Steel 2012.
Juuuuuuust a little different from the original. I darkened the blacks up so that you see less of the streaks in the inks, and I also added a little bit of tone for a little bit of depth. So far its 50/50 as to which is the better. I kind of lean towards this one.

Après avoir constaté les différences fortement observables entre des Petit-ducs maculés de forme grises (Parc Angrignon) et d'autres de formes rousses (Jacques Gagnon à St-Antoine de Richelieu) et découvert dans la littérature ornithologique que trois formes existes, la troisième étant brune chocolat, il apparaît plus que probable que celui-ci, du Boisé Papineau, soit de forme brune chocolat. Il est intéressant de noter que, tout comme pour les chiens labrador, on peut retrouver dans une portée les trois couleurs si les parents sont de couleurs différentes.

There’s nothing cuter than a baby elephant. . Elephants will give you a different exposure in its color depending on the mud they’ve been rolling in and yet you have to figure out how they are in relationship to gray that day (I use the grey card reading). Light, understanding the natural light.

1960 – Suppression de la teugue. Prolongation du pont du gaillard au-dessus du panneau de la cale 2 afin de remplacer les troisièmes classes et les rationnaires par 214 couchettes de classe cabine, avec salle à manger et bar etc. Le tout climatisé.
La jauge brute passant à 13.473 tjb et le port en lourd est réduit à 5.800 Tonnes PL

Une salle avec de nouveaux compresseurs de climatisation de type York et un circuit saumure froide fut installée à bâbord de l'entrée machine.

Passant par le Cap de bonne Espérance lorsque le Canal de Suez sera fermé en 1956 et en 1967.
Aux premières escales de la ligne originelle : Port Saïd, Suez, Aden (aller), Djibouti (retour), Colombo, Singapour, Saïgon, Hong-Kong, Yokohama et Kobé. Vont s'ajouter Manille, Karachi, Bombay et Bangkok.

1954 le 22 septembre : Vers 13:25 peu après le départ de Marseille. Une disjonction totale (on ne dit pas encore black-out) désempare le navire durant 40 mn.
1954 le 24 septembre: vers 16:15 au cours d'un exercice d'abandon, la rupture d'un frein entraine la chute de la baleinière.
1954 le 26 septembre: vers 17h15 un coup de feu dans le tableau principal entraine une disjonction totale. On doit mouiller par 47m de fond à 15 milles de Suez. Il y reviendra le 28 et les pièces avariées seront remplacées par des pièces neuves envoyées par avion. Il reprendra son voyage au départ de Suez le 5 octobre. Il y aura durant ce voyage de nombreuses avaries sur les chaudières Velox.
1956 au mois de mars: L'ex-reine Marie-Josée d'Italie arrive à Marseille et sera reçue par Mr Viou, adjoint de l'Agent Général.
1959 le 11 avril: En escale à Singapour. Lors de la mise en route, une fuite importante aux circuits de vapeur surchauffée doit impérativement être réparée avant le départ qui sera retardé au 13.
1961 le 12 janvier: A Marseille, début d'incendie vers 22:40 h. Le feu sera éteint vers 23:20h
1962 en juin. Entre deux voyages sur l'Extrême-Orient, il effectue un voyage de rapatriement des Français d'Algérie, à Alger et Bône. Commandant Lillet.
1963 le 3 novembre: Début d'incendie dû à un déversement de diésel-oil par un col de cygne. Deux chauffeurs éteindront ce début d'incendie au moyen de deux extincteurs.
1966 le 13 juillet: Lors de sa manœuvre d'entrée au port de Singapour il est abordé par le pétrolier hollandais KREBSIA. La réparation provisoire s'effectuera au port du 16 juillet au 5 août.
1967 le 4 décembre, à Bangkok, avarie d'un turbo alternateur qui sera réparé au Japon.
1969 le 22 mars: Avarie du groupe turbines bâbord à Hong-Kong. Le retour de voyage s'effectuera sur le seul groupe turbine tribord. L'escale de Bangkok sera supprimée.
1969 le 24 octobre: Rentre à Marseille de son dernier voyage aux Messageries Maritimes
