A 'sadhu'(holy man) praying to the deities on the temple wall @ Kamakhya Temple,Guwahati,Assam,India
They had been apart for all of five minutes when Tristan decided to get back into the water - Isolde was there, waiting for his affectionate little snort (swan equivalent of whispering sweet nothings in her ear!)Then they drifted happily into the evening twilight.
A snap of my mother and cousin's kid engrossed in evening prayers ( നാമം ചൊല്ലല് ). Devotion and faith is an integral part of life in Kerala. Whether at the local temple, church, mosque or in the confines of home, faith has a place uppermost in the minds of people. The exact semantics of which I have not yet come to fully understand.
Again not a super-sharp or technically brilliant pic from the aging cam but the strong visual touch & a personal preference ensured that I kept this snap.
The 'Silent Retreat Pilgrimage: Puri, India' was a 7-day inward journey with Paramahamsa Vishwananda that occurred in the a beautiful retreat centre on the outskirts of Puri, which is famous for its magnificent temples and devotion to Sri Jagannath. In this special pilgrimage, under the guidance of Paramahamsa Vishwananda, the participants practiced three stages of silence and followed a very disciplined routine, in order to experience and expand the depth of silence within themselves.

My grandfather has gone into nursing care, so the process of sorting through and rehoming all his possessions has begun. In doing this my aunt discovered a lock of my grandmother's hair folded in a 100 lire note. It turns out Papa took it with him when he fought in Europe in WWII, carrying it with him through multiple battles in Italy and North Africa. He has kept it in his dresser drawer for almost 70 years, including the 20 years since Nanny died. None of us knew of its existence until now.
Maximilian Kolbe and Manche Masemola. The first two in the series of 10 statues of 20th Century martyrs above the Great Western Door of Westminster Abbey.
Maximillian Kolbe was born on 8th January 1894 in Zdunska Wola. His parents were devout and nationalistic. In October 1917, after studying philosophy & theology in Rome, he and six other students formed a new body, Militia Immaculatae, which promoted devotion to the Virgin Mary, worked to secure converts and to perform good works. Kolbe returned to Poland to lecture at the Fransciscan seminary at Cracow.
With a grant of land from Prince Jan Drucki-Lubecki, he helped establish Niepokalanow, a Christian community which produced an ever-increasing number of publications in ever-greater numbers. He also travelled to the Japanese city of Nagasaki and established a similar community of publishing Christians there. In 1936 he returned to Poland after 6 years in Japan.
When war broke out, he sent his brothers away, but remained there himself. He was soon interned. He resisted pressure to apply for release, but was for a time free. He was detained again. At Auschwitz he was known discreetly to give his own food to other prisoners, even as his own health crumbled, to hear confessions and, in the face of stern prohibitions, to celebrate mass.
In late 1941 a prisoner in his own block escaped and when another fellow-prisoner was to be executed as punishment he stepped forward to take his place. 10 people were selected to die as punishment, 6 of these died of starvation in the next two weeks waiting for execution. Kolbe was still fully concious when he was administered a lethal injection on the eve of the Assumption of Mary, 14 August 1941. He has since been beatified and later canonized as Martyr by Pope John Paul II in 1982.
It is believed that Manche Masemola was born around 1913, in Marishane, a young woman of the Pedi tribe, she passed her short life in Sekhukhuneland, in the Transvaal. Her people were confined to reserved lands that were barren, and they worked hard to eke out a living there.
Despite a general feeling of distrust of the Christian faith, brought to the district by German and Dutch settlers, Manche went to hear Fr Augustine Moeka of the Anglican Community of the Resurrection. She was keen to hear more and started visiting the Community twice a week, despite the fears and disapproval of her family.
When their prohibitions failed she was beaten. On a number of occasions Manche Masemola remarked to her cousin, Lucia, and to Fr Moeka that she would die at their hands. Then, on or near 4 February 1928, her mother and father took her away to a lonely place and killed her. She was buried by a granite rock on a remote hillside. A few days later her younger sister, Mabule, became ill and then died Mabula was buried beside her sister. Their father marked the burial site by planting euphorbia trees beside their graves.
In 1935 a little group of Christians made a pilgrimage to the grave. Another followed in 1941; a third in 1949. In 1969 her mother was baptized into the church. Hundreds of people make a pilgrimage to the site of her grave each year in rememberance of a brave young woman who held onto her Christian convictions in the face of brutal punishment and, ultimately, death at the hands of her own parents.
Before anything is said, I have to give credit for this photo to my mother. I simply did some post-processing to help match the mood. I will forever be so severely jealous of this shot. I absolutely adore it.

Umayyad mosque is considered one of the holy shrines for Shiite Muslims (mostly Iranian) as they believed the grandson of Muhammad was buried in the mosque, whom they held highly.
Are Syrian religious? I am not very certain as a 10-day trip can't give us such deep comprehension. I would say the younger ones probably a little less, and they normally cover themselves with head scarf only. However, we also bumped into very modern Syrians -- pictures later.
