A woman in a sari prays to Lord Ganesh during the Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi in Kolkata, India.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrating the arrival of the elephant-headed god of prosperity on earth. It lasts 10 days and ends with the immersion of the Ganesh murti (idol) into water.
Although mostly celebrated in Mumbai, Ganesh pujas are organised throughout India.
The moment is heavy with unspoken words, an eternity compressed into a fleeting gesture. A mother and grandmother, weathered by years of sacrifice, pour every ounce of their love, pride, and sorrow into this final kiss. Their hands, roughened by toil, hold the daughter close, as if trying to anchor her to a life she must leave behind.
This is not just a farewell—it is a rite of passage, a silent promise that their love will follow her into the unknown. Whether stepping into the servitude of another family or the quiet halls of the monastery, the daughter carries with her the weight of their devotion, their hopes, and their dreams.
The kiss is their gift, a blessing to shield her, a final act of selflessness in a world that asks too much of women like them. And though their hearts ache with the loss, they know they must let her go, trusting that the seeds of love they’ve sown will bloom in her future.
Beneath the shadow of the ancient stone,
A tender kiss, a love deeply known.
Hands calloused, yet a touch so kind,
A fleeting embrace, forever enshrined.
Through parting tears, a silent plea,
Carry us with you, wherever you’ll be.
Into the fields or cloisters’ embrace,
Our love remains, time cannot erase.
Hands rough from labour,
A kiss before the unknown,
Love in every breath.
Stone walls stand silent,
A mother’s heart softly breaks,
Farewell to her child.
Paths now diverging,
A kiss seals love eternal,
Life’s quiet echo.

A heartfelt tribute to the divine bond between Mary and the Christ Child, this portrait series reimagines the timeless beauty and grace of the Madonna and Child imagery. Inspired by centuries of devotion, each piece captures the tenderness, love, and spiritual significance of the Mater Dei.

A place of personal devotion
In 1268, Lord John Balliol died. His grieving widow, Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway, had his heart embalmed and placed in an ivory casket. She carried it with her everywhere.
She undertook many charitable acts in his memory. These included the founding of the Cistercian abbey of Dulce Cor (Latin for ‘Sweet Heart’) in 1273. When she too died in 1289, she was laid to rest in front of the abbey church’s high altar, clutching her husband’s heart to her bosom.
Sweetheart Abbey’s conception as a shrine to human and divine love is deeply appealing. So too is its attractive setting. The graceful ruin nestles between the grey bulk of Criffel and the shimmering waters of the Solway Firth, whilst its blood-red sandstone walls contrast with the lush green grass at their feet.
A chequered history
Monks from Dundrennan Abbey., near Kirkcudbright, established the new monastery. It was the last Cistercian house to be founded in Scotland. Within seven years of Dervorgilla’s death, with the builders still working on the abbey church, the Wars of Independence with England erupted.
Edward I of England himself resided at the abbey in 1300, whilst campaigning in Galloway. After 50 years of bloodshed, the monastery was in a bad state. The bishop of Galloway bemoaned Sweetheart’s ‘outstanding and notorious poverty’. To the rescue rode Archibald ‘the Grim’, Lord of Galloway and 3rd Earl of Black Douglas, who financed wholesale repairs and rebuilding. Thereafter, little is heard of Sweetheart until its demise following the Protestant Reformation in 1560.
A graceful ruin
Despite the prolonged wars with England, and the vicissitudes of time, the beautiful abbey church of St Mary the Virgin survives almost entire, a lasting testament to the monastic ideal that was of such pivotal importance in the Middle Ages. (By contrast, the monks’ cloister to the south has almost entirely gone.)
The church was planned in the shape of a cross and divided into different areas:
•a presbytery at the east end once housing the high altar;
•the monks’ choir immediately to its west;
•flanking transepts to north and south, housing side-chapels;
•and a six-bay nave to the west.
A bell tower once soared high above the central crossing.
Although it adheres to Cistercian principles of austerity, the church has fine flourishes. These include the stone tracery in the presbytery windows, the ingenious circular window above the south transept, and the impressive west front. A stone effigy of Lady Dervorgilla lies on display in the south transept. She is shown dressed in gown and mantle and cradling her husband’s embalmed heart to her bosom.

2 Timothy 3:16,17 NKJV " All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."-------------------------------------------------------------------------Every new device comes with an instruction manual. Some people will always read the manual first so that they have some idea of what to do. Others will ignore the manual, and just try and figure it out on their own. Do you know that we all have an instruction manual for life? It's the Bible! [ Romans 15:4] " For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope."----- Everything we need to know about salvation, living a Godly life, and maintaining our faith is in the Bible. The men and women we read about were just like us; They had faults, illness, doubts, and fears to deal with. The Bible is an immovable anchor in the storms of life. No other book has the inspiration, truth, and power of the word of God. [ Hebrews 4:12] " For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and, of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."---------------- The Bible is the book for everyone. It is revelation, inspiration, and communication of the eternal, living, and powerful God!
Traditional Hinduism speak of five different bhakti bhavas or "affective essences".
Bhavas are different attitudes that a devotee takes according to his individual temperament to express his devotion towards God in some form. The different bhavas are: śānta, placid love for God; dāsya, the attitude of a servant; sakhya, the attitude of a friend; vātsalya, the attitude of a mother towards her child; and madhura, the attitude of a woman towards her lover. Several saints are known to have practiced these bhavas. The nineteenth century mystic, Ramakrishna is said to have practiced these five bhavas. The attitude of Hanuman towards lord Rama is considered to be of dasya bhava. The attitude of Arjuna and the shepherd boys of Vrindavan towards Krishna is regarded as sakhya bhava. The attitude of Radha towards Krishna is regarded as madhura bhava. The attitude of Yashoda, who looked after Krishna during his childhood is regarded as vatsalya bhava.
Caitanya-caritamrta mentions that Mahaprabhu came to distribute the four spiritual sentiments of Vraja loka: dasya, sakhya, vatsalya, and sringara. Sringara is the relationship of the intimate love.

The Cais das Colunas (or the Columns Pier) owes its name to the two pillars erected at the waterfront of Praça do Comércio or Terreiro do Paço, a work by the architect Eugénio dos Santos, held during Lisbon’s reconstruction after the earthquake of 1755. These columns, which end the marble staircase leading down to the Tagus River, are of Masonic inspiration, representing the two pillars of Solomon’s Temple (Wisdom and Devotion).
