From September 15th to 19th the second of the four JCOM Masterclasses, educational programmes aimed at an international audience and held by international experts takes place. For the 20 selected participants this interactive course represents a unique opportunity to discuss the state-of-the-art of science exhibition development with particular focus on the possible different design approaches, helping participants to reflect on the relationship between the different media, contents and visitors' experience.

To the south. So far I haven't seen lightning (just lots of rain and that short hailstorm,) but the updrafts have been pretty strong, causing some crazy clouds to form.

A developing Supercell across far Northeast Wisconsin on July 1 2017. Only isolated storms were expected, but this beast began to develop along an old outflow boundary from a storm early in the afternoon. Aiding in the development was a lake breeze boundary. The updraft was so explosive.

Conceived and developed initially along the contemporary European model of an encyclopaedic warehouse of cultural and natural history, the Australian Museum building has evolved to encompass a range of different architectural styles. For 30 years the Museum was located in various government buildings until 1844 when the Colonial Architect, Mortimer Lewis, oversaw the construction of the sandstone building in the Greek Revival Style. It was opened to the public in May, 1857 where it currently stands on the corner of College and Park Streets, opposite Hyde Park. In order to accommodate the expanding collections of the Museum, architect James Barnet was responsible for the construction of the neoclassical west wing along William Street in 1868. A third storey was added to the north Lewis wing in 1890, bringing cohesion to the building design. In 1963, the floor space of the Museum almost doubled when Joseph van der Steen under Government Architect, Edward Farmer, designed a six story extension linked to the Lewis building for the scientific and research collections, the reference library and a public restaurant. There were also two basement floors providing workspace for scientific staff. This International-style extension became known as the Parkes/Farmer eastern wing. In 1977, to mark the Museum's 150th anniversary, bronze lower case letters were added to the façade identifying the building as 'the Australian museum'. The Collections and Research section was expanded in 2008, at a cost of $40.9 million with a new building adjacent to the Parkes Farmer wing facing William Street.

On Tuesday, June 16th, guests gathered for “The Developing Mind: Understanding Our Children at Risk." This Ambassadors Speakers Series took place at Annandale Golf Club and was hosted by Marikay and David Cuthill. Bradley Peterson, MD, Director of the Institute for the Developing Mind (IDM), led an intriguing presentation on Neurodevelopmental and neurological disorders . He shared how the use of new approaches, such as brain imaging studies, can improve diagnosis and treatment plans. He also illustrated the vision for IDM, which is to foster the collaboration of scientists, clinical researchers, and clinicians to speed scientific discovery. Project: Spring Forecasting Experiment

Location: National Weather Center (Norman, Oklahoma)

Date: May 2023

Photographer: James Murnan (NOAA/NSSL)

Summary: The Spring Forecasting Experiment provides opportunities for forecasters to provide feedback to ensure that new guidance products and visualization approaches meet their needs. This is a unique opportunity to see and influence the future of NWS forecasting tools for high-impact weather.

* The experiment is directly aligned with NOAA FACETs and Warn-on Forecast (WoF) programs, including examination and evaluation of real-time forecasts from a prototype WoF ensemble system.

* Activities are formulated to provide evidence-based information on how best to design convection-allowing models and ensemble systems, which is accomplished through contributions to the Community-Leveraged Unified Ensemble (CLUE) by EMC, GSL, NCAR, NSSL, and GFDL.

* The SFE supports NOAA plans to develop a simplified, unified forecast system (UFS) centered on the FV3 dynamic core. A prototype FV3-based CAM system called the Rapid Refresh Forecast System (RRFS) will be evaluated against the operational HRRR and HREF for severe weather forecasting applications..

* New testing and evaluation activities for SFE 2023 will include examinations of regional and global-with-nest versions of the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS). New extended range (Days 3-8) CAM ensemble evaluations will also be conducted.

This enterprise has now started in the municipality of Tirana. The Social Stimulating Alternative Programm (PASS) is, as well, developing the implementation of the public bicycle network in the city of Tirana, known as Ecovolis – Eco + Volis: ecological flight.

Ecovolis is a program which aims the promotion of ecological transportation, by giving our city more clean air, adding a civic European practice which helps in economic, social and environmental development of our community. Through Ecovolis PASS aim to offer a new & innovative service for the community of Tirana through ecological transportation by bicycle. Ecovolis is a public service provided to the citizens through bicycle station placed at different point of the city, to move and perform their daily chores. These bike stations will be established by PASS and will be monitored in cooperation with local authorities, employing people with few employment opportunities and other youths.

This system has been already presented to the people of Tirana, through the first Ecovolis station at the “Rinia” park, which provides 40 bicycles and a continuous service from 8 am to 9 pm, 7 days a week.

This initiative joins the ecologic transport network of bicycles, actually being encouraged and spread through many European cities. The most numerous users in this initiative are people from 18 to 32 years old, who up to the moment have reached 700 memberships and 500 users not being members yet. To this number we can add the regular bicycle users, who have their own bicycles and only during the activities of Ecovolis, called “The Bike Tour Saturday” have reached the number of 300 youngsters passionated by bicycles. These datas show that Tirana does not lack in will and need for bicycles, but motivation and support are necessary to make this trend and civil behaviour more secure and sustainable.
