Derrick Breidenthal has been developing and producing fine art for over twenty five years. His work is heavily influenced by the landscapes of rural America. A Missouri native, he has recently moved back from Colorado where he spent the past 10 years. His work has been showcased throughout the US. His current studio is based in the Crossroads art district in Kansas City, Missouri. Current studies focus on color and abstraction anchored in nature.

Most of Derrick’s painting is done in a method called Direct Painting (also known as Alla Prima). This is a method in which each stroke is applied to the surface with the intention of letting it remain as part of the final statement. As the work progresses, each stroke must relate to what has already been placed on the painting. Ideally, when the last bit of bare surface is covered, the picture is finished, and no retouching is needed.

The challenge of direct painting is that the painter must be able to dealwith all the problems of the picture at the same moment. Although some of Derrick’s paintings do not strictly adhere to pure direct methods, they are still direct in spirit as he attempts to realize the final overall effect immediately. Each stroke should be significant and final.
