November 27, 2016 - South of I-80 Minden Interchange, US

Rare for Nebraska in November that is....

There was some risk of severe weather that afternoon. In fact.... way out of season severe weather. There was just enough instability by afternoon to allow the thunderstorms to develop, strengthen, and even spin up a few tornadoes in the 4-5 p.m. CST time frame.

I had a 5 hour drive back from Missouri and was exhausted. Plus I had to work in a few hours so chasing this storm was just not possible that afternoon. But I did venture out to capture a few snaps of that afternoons events.

Pictured here were the cells effecting the Red Cloud to Clay Center Nebraska areas. I was just to the south of the I-80 Minden Interchange. Found a cozy spot without any powerlines and pointed my camera to the east southeast.

Some amazing captures to finalize my severe weather photography for 2016

So the storms redeveloped as we hastened our way back to the Scottsbluff area. Cells developed to our south into western Nebraska via Kimball County, and we were way to far away to catch up.

We had our own storm coming over the ridge from the southwest. By the time we got into city limits the storm was already on top of us. We decided to head east of Scottsbluff towards the city of Minatare Nebraska. At least we would see something.

Beautiful Structure ... Side view of this approaching supercell.

It was to good to be true, but right after sunset a secondary small non severe thunderstorm started to brew just to the southwest of Kearney.

Even though I just had a spectacular afternoon of some incredible stormscapes, I was in for a treat this night. An electrified thriller, one storm that I wont soon forget.

Almost late June 2020, and the severe weather season has been just down right horrible for anything of photographic value this year. I mean this when I say Chase Locally. Due to Health issues, Truck maintenance issues, Equipment Issues, Camera Issues... With all that has been going on in my life, I've had to pick my chasing days and nights carefully this year. To be 100% Honest... I'm just happy I get to chase! Never let bad things set you back when the opportunity presents itself. That's my motto!

Luckily I had all my gear ready to go when when had strong severe thunderstorms develop in north central Nebraska and they were cresting southward down to south central Nebraska. My home turf.

This time of year is when everything changes weather wise here in south central Nebraska. Monsoons down in the southwest part of the US are firing and that usually means for us no storms. Not in 2020. Even though we had a late start to severe weather season here... mother nature hasn't let me down so far. She has remained active in my neck of the woods.

All the storms this day were outflow boundary generated storms. Meaning no tornadoes this day. Though I did capture 1 funnel, you'll see this in the video. Though with outflow dominate storms shelf clouds form and they can be more than picturesque. Its what I was hunting for this day! Oh did I get some and then some!

We managed to avoid the rain cloud and were back in the car before the downpour started!

Yesterday at August 30th was the thirteenth LST. With 2500 other hikers, we did the long Strange Trail with friends. The total distance from Cadzand bath to Breskens at zee, was supposed to be 17.2 km, but to get our stamps, we had to stop at every beach pavilion, which meant walking through loose sand. So we ended up with almost 19 km.

We were very lucky, because it was low tide and we had a westerly wind, which meant the wind was at our backs. We were "blown" towards Breskens. A few kilometers away from Breskens, we were caught in a heavy downpour. I had a disposable poncho, but it wouldn't open; it was stuck together. Soaking wet, but we had so much fun.

We finished the hike and received a gladiolus as a trophy.

Walking back to the car, a heavy shower rolled in over the sea. But we left Breskens behind and headed home dry, with sore muscles and aching feet (which are now up in the air).

What a beautiful day, and how much we enjoyed it. Wonderful temperatures with friends.

The proceeds from the Lange Strangetocht will go to three charities: the ZeeSterk Foundation, the W-Z-Vlaanderen rescue brigade, and the ZorgSaam Zeeuws-Vlaanderen kidney dialysis center. These proceeds will be used to purchase a bed bike that offers patients relaxation during treatment.

Dank je wel: Ingrid, Sylvia, Jacqueline, Ricardo en Miranda. Samen met jullie was het meer als een walk, het was een feestje!

I am plagued with weak lungs owing to many years of constant childhood illnesses, and as a result, if I am unlucky enough to catch your cold, I usually end up with pneumonia or a nasty chest infection at best. I was recovering from one such unpleasant chest infection after a period of prolonged ill health. A very dear friend who loves photography as much as I do, decided that I needed to be taken out of myself, go somewhere and reconnect with what I found joyful in life, so she took me to the top of Mount Macedon in the Macedon Ranges in central Victoria for a photography afternoon. It was a bitterly cold day, made even more so by the wind and the altitude, but we were very well rugged up against the bitter wind. It rained on and off. However, the trip was a wonderful one: just what I needed to help lift my flagging spirits, and the day afforded us a beautiful and striking sunset over the valley far below. Using the sunset as an analogy, my friend told me that my poor health would pass, just like a winter rainstorm, and that the sun would reappear. She was right, my health troubles did dissipate like a shower of rain, and a few weeks later, the sun shone in my life again. Now I am healthy and well, and I have happy, sunny days once more.

The theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 1st of February is "sky". Now I am not a sky watcher, like my friend who took me out to Mount Macedon that day is – always looking for that perfect elusive sunset – however I am captivated by the sky and clouds on occasion when they present something beautiful, dramatic or both! I do hope you like my choice of image from the top of Mount Macedon for the theme this week, and that like me, it makes you smile too!

I Seriously, wasn't going to go out this night... Had a weeks worth of hell, and I really just wanted to do was get off work and go home. I was tired, I was cranky, it was the first weekend I've had off in a Month...

As soon as I pulled into the driveway @home, I could hear the weather radio going off and my storm capturing sensation came over me. Listening to the bullitins coming over the radio and I Freaked!. The storms were closer than I had thought. NWS just put warnings for Northern Buffalo County for super fast development of strong to potentially super severe, with large hail, and possible Tornadoes.

Photography Chance of a lifetime... Even though someone could cast me as a member of the Walking Dead....I was a trooper and I didn't wimp out! Luckily I had the my camera on the charger... Grabbed all my equipment & I hauled A** North... 20 mins later I found myself in the perfect spot, under the perfect conditions!

Cresting over northern Buffalo County, ready to cross between Pleasanton & Ravenna Nebraska, this cell was rapidly building and already had tornado warning on it. Incredible CG lightning in front of the storm cell was just to good to capture, with lighting firing off every few seconds.

The month of July in Nebraska is mostly just outflow storms from about mid June on. Meaning extremely strong outflow winds in front of this storm. Destructive that evening with winds over 60+ mph.

Once the storm base moved closer I was able to get some incredible cloud to ground strikes that would make for some of the best lighting captures of 2018. Like clock work I expected a late night storm with some phenomenal definition.

Beautiful crystal blue lightning illuminated the night as the arcus (shelf cloud) approached from the due west. Severe warnings were in place & right in my direction. Got to my location, set up the gear and went to town... Nothing but Crystal Blue Thunderstorm Eye Candy!!!

Talk about being disappointed. Lightning is by far my favorite thing to capture. If you have watched my video on this day on my Facebook Link, you would find about 30 images that I didn't have focused. Talk about wanting to shoot my self in the foot. It would have been some of my best captures to date.....

I did redeem myself though. The storm was still firing off a ton of cg lightning. Refocused my lens and captured these final shots of day.

I put this composite image together for Sliders Sunday, using two images that I dug out of my archives. I haven't had the opportunity to come up with many new images lately, but I've got thousands of old ones stored in my computer, so I'll just keep on keepin' on until the well runs dry.

July 9, 2014 - North of Minden Nebraska US

What a Day to remember...

I was just out of surgery for my left knee, I wasn't supposed to be out at all. Knee was swollen to the size of a soft ball or bigger. Wrapped & in a cast but I wasn't about to let one of the best photographic storms of the season pass me by. Mrs & Friends helped me into my truck. Gear in hand I was off!

Before I was able to get on this storm. Historically, this storm wrecked havoc on 16 counties with softball and baseball sized hail. I caught up with it just to the south of Minden Nebraska as I was traveling south. I would never get in front of it but only on the back side as it proceeded to the southeast into North Central Kansas.

From my point of view, it was one of the best photographic storm of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures from the back side of this incredibly photogenic thunderstorm. Light & Shadow played well as the Sun peaked out at the end of this day!

Still Waiting....

I think this has been the longest I have waited for a severe storm in the past 30 years. Geez....

This storm developed & was severe warned out in the western counties of Nebraska. Of course as soon as it hits the South Central Nebraska Weather Bubble... It died out.

But Still... A Dying Thunderstorm & the Last light of the Day... I couldn't resist!

Chilliwack, B.C.

2077

The FFM spent a lovely cloudy and misty day down in Geelong beside the waterfront. The heat yesterday was followed by darker clouds and some very light drizzle. The waterfront was very busy with a Offshore Superboat Championship racing and the Botanic Gardens had the Ford Day. So plenty of people and things to do. The morning had patches of sunlight which shone on the pier. Great to see everyone again.

The Cunningham Pier buildings were shining in the morning light and looking lovely.

We had to pack up and move south via Hwy 283 South then Head due east of Hwy 89. This route takes us though Beaver City, Orleans, and eventually just north of Alma Nebraska.

First Stop Beaver City just for a few mins. This is where the storm intensified and we had a well defined Meso on this storm with all the extras.

We were still a few miles ahead of this beast and safe. Plenty of time to stop and have a picnic.... A well 4 course meal of Storm Photography!

Yes a few flaws in this pano... just to darn windy!

It was my last hurrah for 2017.

Hwy 183 Northbound..

It took some time, and I didn't waste any to get back into position.

The winds were ferocious. I couldn't keep a steady shot. I jimmy rigged it and finally got it steady enough in the wind to get these final shots of the year.

It was worth my time and effort this day. Some of my best to end the 2017 Storm Chasing Season.
