It storm chasing go time this time of year. Another phenomenal day of storm chasing was upon us in South Central Nebraska.
We had another moderate risk day, and again, the sky was again talking to me. Best of all this was going to be a local chase day.
Back to Hwy 6, then north.. Had to catch up to the storm. I did but it was weakening, but still a photographic treat.

The ancient woods stood in a heavy, suffocating silence, as if the very air were made of leaden clouds. Under the thick canopy of emerald leaves, the shadows stretched long and hungry, threatening to swallow the meadow in an eternal twilight. But then, as if the heavens themselves had finally shattered, violent beams of amber light pierced through the foliage, stabbing the damp earth with a divine and terrifying brilliance. It was a momentary truce between the storm and the sun, a gilded wound in the heart of the forest that revealed the hidden spirits of the moss and the cold, unyielding stones.
Each ray felt like a ghostly finger reaching down to touch the memories of the soil, illuminating secrets that were meant to remain buried in the gloom. The contrast between the bruised, stormy sky and the sudden warmth on the grass created a gothic tension, a beautiful yet unsettling reminder that nature's most majestic displays are often born from the clash of light and darkness. In this fleeting instant, the meadow was no longer a simple clearing, but a stage for an epic cosmic drama where the day refused to surrender to the coming night.

Last few weeks of chasing was extremely fun... though its good to be close to home. It's of course where I'm most familiar with the terrain and most of all the atmosphere. This would be one of my beginning phases of Lightning photography for 2018.
Lightning is the main reason why I started storm chasing. EVERY opportunity I can get, and folks the formula has to be perfect...its not easy capture Epic lighting shots. As many as you see, I have about 30 that you don't. Shooting lightning over the past 30 years... I have my own way to capture it. A learning experience that is still in session.

How menacing is this sky over Port Philip Bay in Melbourne this morning? These intrepid folk were determined to keep fishing no matter what Mother Nature threw at them. The photographer wasn’t so brave - he packed up and went home shortly after taking this photo.

It has been an excellent start to the 2016 chase Season. Bonus was, that I had the day off and no commitments except for storm chasing. I was set for an Epic Day!
I ended up with well over 700 pic from this storm chasing event, but I've skimmed it down to about 100+. Truly this will become some of my best severe weather photography to date...
I was seriously late the game on this storm. But I was never out of the game. I had now positioned myself just to the North of Wray Colorado.
Strategically, you want to be to the south east, southwest for the best light... It's all about timing, and I thought it wouldn't produce till it was well west of my location. Giving me that perfect view of the backside rotation of the storm.
In my opinion, I found a perfect view, looking due south southeast. I ended up on the northwest side of the rotation. Dangerous yes...but this will eventually give me one excellent view of this tornado and all her glory.

An epic night of sunset light and storm light @ twilight. Its almost every storm chasers dreams... or at least, in my own opinion, to get along side of a storm like this, as its firing away some incredible CC & CG every few seconds. What more could you ask for...
I was that Lucky Gut that evening. Just mother nature and I. Close to home after a few long storm chasing jaunts is just fine by me. She was producing and I was capturing every incredible second of this storm.. No Forking Bolt went away that evening without me getting a snap of its presence.. lol

I very nearly stayed in bed while on holidays given the weather forecast but got up early regardless and was able to capture these dark and moody seascapes at Brunswick Heads. The use of a neutral density filter helped add to the moodiness I feel.
For Sliders Sunday, I put together couple of shots from my archives and used Topaz to spruce them up a bit.

Cerro Castellan, less commonly known as Castolon Peak or Castellan Peak, is a prominent butte rising from the desert floor in Big Bend National Park. The mountain is part of a series of summits once known as the Carazones Peaks. Cerro Castellan's peak reaches an elevation of 3,293 feet above sea level and rises more than 1,000 feet above the terrain below. The geologic origin of the peak, like that of so many other topographic highs in this region of West Texas, is differential erosion-a resistant rock wearing away more slowly than rocks around it. Cerro Castellan is a high stack of volcanic rocks, including ash, lava, and tuffaceous rocks. It is capped by a dense lava flow underlain by various tuffs and basalts. Though little vegetation grows on the sheer cliffs and steep, pointed profile of its peak, the lower slopes of Cerro Castellan support a sparse growth of Chihuahuan Desert scrub, including most prominently such characteristic species as creosote bush and ocotillo.

Dark, ominous mammatus clouds with a distinct, bumpy pattern cover the sky, creating a dramatic and powerful atmosphere. The deep blue tones contrast with lighter patches, suggesting a powerful stormy weather scene.

Sun was just beginning to break through the clouds but the grey backdrop and snow-burdened trees made for a nice contrast to the bright orange construction marker on this morning's drive to work.
Minto.
Heavy clouds hang in the sky over the south-west Sydney suburb of Minto.
The streets are unusually quiet with hardly a vehicle or pedestrian to be seen.
For this is mid afternoon on Boxing Day 2020.
It is almost as if 2020 is giving us a final farewell with dark clouds and storms as we prepare to say farewell to the year that was.

Finally out in front of this storm again. We had a long drive south just to get in Northern Buffalo County in South Central Nebraska.
Cloud to cloud lightning was firing off every few seconds. This storm meant business, and was growing into a monster.
We parked a few miles outside of town and waited for this to creep ever so closer.

Portland Oregon Bridge.The sky was so dark. Shot from passenger seat while hubby is in the drivers seat.
The last rays of light falling on a bandstand in the beautiful park in Glen Innes NSW Australia with a massive storm brewing from the north.
A quick trio to The Warren, Folkestone.
Damp moody and cold.
Some lovely muted tones though. The is first image to be publish after having a full sensor and mirror box clean.
So nice not to have to clone out all the dust spots..
Everything in this picture involves cement. Cement (or concrete) buildings, cement silos, cement road, cement domes, cement pillars, even crushed cement (or limestone) covering the beach where I am standing to take this picture. If you are a "cement-ophile", then this picture is for you : )
St. Mary's Cement Factory, Charlevoix, Michigan operates this complex, and the nearby limestone pit. They produce Portland Cement and related products. Cement mixed with sand, stone and water is "concrete."

Had some nice clouds today and couldn't resist, no that's not right, "had to" stop and take some pictures of Castle Crags which is just south of Dunsmuir, California and off I-5. I knew with those clouds and light I had something to work with. All processing on this was with Lightroom CC.
The following stuff is more for my own interests, but you're all welcome to look or not, believe me I won't be offended if you don't have time.
I've added a few links to other pictures of Castle Crags, one is a tighter shot using the A9 and my 70-200mm with the 1.4x converter.
Also, this shot unedited, SOOC in case you want to see the difference the processing made.
And the last one is a picture from January 2016, and not nearly as nice.

Brand-new Soo Line EMD SD60 No. 6012 leads the hot Ford train westbound out of Tunnel City, Wisconsin, in the very last light of September 20, 1987. Trailing is recently acquired and repainted former Burlington Northern SD40B No. 6450 (BN 7600), along with Soo SD40 No. 755 and Milwaukee Road SD40-2 No. 134.

This one's from California's Central Valley where much of our Nation's fruit and nuts are grown. This shot was taken near Wasco after picking up a truck load of eggs from Central Valley Eggs. I have no idea if these are fruit or nut trees. As I drove I kept one eye on the road and the other on the storm clouds rolling in, looking for a "shot" along the narrow CA-56 (between I-5 and US-99). I also noticed stacks of bee hives spaced every couple of hundred yards. I pulled off the road onto the hard packed dirt. From here I was able to get the orchard, the fast moving storm clouds and the bee hives. Took several pictures, this being my favorite.
Tonight I'm back in the California Central Valley, about 60 miles North in Hanford. I'm at my delivery, but they're closed until AM tomorrow. Got a couple of hours before bed time, gonna post this and do some catching up on Flickr.
Well, that didn't go as planned, crappy internet speed last night. Made delivery at 4 AM, then drove to Tulare and the Love's truck stop. Good internet here using my Verizon Jet Pack for a WiFi hotspot connection. T-Mobile on my phone is slow here, but looking good on the Jet Pack.
Picking up nearby in a few hours, then to Laredo, Texas. Let's see if I can do some Flickr catching up in the meantime!!!

It was to good to be true, but right after sunset a secondary small non severe thunderstorm started to brew just to the southwest of Kearney.
Even though I just had a spectacular afternoon of some incredible stormscapes, I was in for a treat this night. An electrified thriller, one storm that I wont soon forget.
