I forgot the name for this vegetable, first thought it is a crystal apple cucumber.. but it probably doesn't have spikes.
This beautiful moth has a bluish body and translucent wings bordered with black, tinged with metallic gold.
The literature says this species is found in Australia and parts of Asia but it's here in Guatemala.
There was much moaning this spring because the first cucumbers planted out...well, most of them died because of the cold. So my Gardening Partner started some more in the greenhouse and finally planted them out about the first part of July. The hot weather came and now we have plenty for eating and also making pickles :) Mother Nature sure knows how to 'yank your chain'.
Japanese Cucumbers are my favorite
and they are finally ripening...fast and furiously.
And love to serve them simply:
1 cucumber
1 T. vinegar
1 t. sugar
1/2 t. kosher salt
1 T. fresh dill, chopped

We'll see how these do because there aren't too many places in our backyard that have sun for enough hours per day to realy grow veggies except the deck, so we'll see how this goes. Hopefully it will climb up the trellis that we put behind it and grow some cucumbers.

Now, what the heck it was exactly, was the musings at my table when we each took a bite.
The menu announced "cucumber grape" but the impression we all got was preserved plums with the unmistaken phenolic sweetness associated so closely with preserved plums.
Gastronomically bizarre!

Technically I probably shouldn't be transplanting these to pots, but I don't have enough room, so they'll probably go into larger cointainers later.

My mom wanted flowers to cover the tv tower, my dad wanted something more functional. So I suggested a flowering vegetable. They're both happy, yay!

Cucumber with black olives, spring onions and chili. Needs mint too, which I didn't have. Still delicious.
