Making pickles was apparently a mongo success! Jamie, Normando, Pumpkin Lord James, Brian and I made 22 pints of pickles ranging from classic dill pickles to hamburger dills to spicy pickles to experimental spicy garlicy dill pickles. A wonderful GX-IV Urban Garden harvest jubilee!
We used fresh, homegrown cucumbers and dill. The 63 garden-fresh cucumbers weighed approximately 10 pounds.
There is a special jar earmarked for Christmas 2009.
We tested some hamburger dills at lunch on some grilled hamburgers and they were startlingly delicious. This is round one of pickle making. More to come in the coming weeks. Thanks Soil Prime!

I saw these on veganyumyum.com/2007/03/cucumber-tea-sandwiches/ and had to make them! I modified the spread though, and added some chopped mint and earth balance buttery spread. These went very quickly!
This year we have two cucumber rigs in the garden, one for the big picklers we make deli dills with, and one for the Parisian Pickling Cucumber, which we're hoping will allow for sweet gherkins. It's nice having a second trellis in this state, with the gentle anarchy of climbing vines and the elegant proliferation of yellow flowers. Soon enough this will be covered with mildew and brown leaves, so we need to enjoy it while it lasts.
