Looks can be deceiving. Despite the sun shimmering brightly on the horizon, the outside temperature was just 1 degree C. The birds and I were glad to finally feel a little warmth.

Well, not that kind of dust, but I do get a buzz on this dust, and any severe weather.

A severe storm centered near Pevely, MO kicked out a gust front that brought up the dust off the surrounding unplanted farmland.

The days are getting longer. Spring is just around the corner and then summer!

Today was -33°C

This was a different sprite-chase. On the early morning of Mar. 11, 2023, a very active line of thunderstorms was moving towards Athens from the NW but in such a way, that I had a clear view over it until it got too close. One example is this capture here.

More than 20 red sprite events were captured and I also got the closest on record, so far for me (“parent” lightning was only some 25-30 km away, so the relevant sprites gave the impression as if they were literally “hanging” above my head). On the other hand, the extreme light pollution from the city and the very bright moon, weren’t helpful at capturing such faint phenomena.

TLEs (like red sprites) appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms (e.g. red sprites appear at altitudes of 40-90 km).

I've used a Sigma 20 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 10k iso.

A delightfully atmospheric sunrise over the Murray River near Mannum, South Australia.

Ever looked out your window at sunset and thought, wow it was just getting dark a minute ago. Now there’s a strange yellow glow emanating from somewhere. Bingo! That was this night.

This developing storm to the northwest of the peak had more in store. By the time we arrived at the top, everyone was instructed back to their vehicles because of the storm. Snow grains began falling, thunder sounded, and twenty minutes of pea sized hail accompanied the ride down from about the halfway point down to Maniteau Springs. In that time the NWS severe warned the storm.

Our Magnolia Grandiflora bush looked great against the long lingering sunset a few nights ago. It will probably be the last good sunset for a while. Our rains have arrived at long last! 20mm last night and counting.

Autumn in New Mexico is a beautiful time of year. This is a scene off of the road to Sandia Crest.

One from the archives of our Big Trip around Australia back in 2004.

Apart from the actual Jumbo jet, this was a very typical scene as we travelled the outback regions of Australia. Our chosen car for the 5 month long big around Australia trip was the little Honda Jazz and here it is lost amid the jumbo sized 4 wheel drives and SUVs. Our little buggy was the only hatchback or car in the whole carpark!

This particular car park is at the QANTAS museum in Longreach, Queensland which features the retired "City of Bunbury" Jumbo jet or 747 as a permanent static display.

The small white fluffy clouds here were very typical of the climate in this part of outback Australia. They would slowly materialise from a clear blue sky at the same time every day - usually around 11 o'clock in the morning.

This was a scan of one side of a stereo pair color slide, originally taken with a German hand built RBT 3D stereo camera using Fuji Sensia 100 film. Original lenses were a pair of Cosina 35-70 zoom lenses. It was scanned with the Canon RP, 24-240 lens and Nisi close up lens.

Sonnenuntergang in Wolken

Evening storms passing over the countryside at Blayney in the Central West of NSW, Australia.

One more from the night of Jun. 25, 2022. Red sprites over the thunderstorms of central and northern Aegean Sea. These happened within less than half a second and in 3 separate groups. They appear as if they are "dancing" in the sky, thus called "dancing sprites" among sprite-chasers. TLEs (like red sprites) appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms. Dark patches are clouds. I've used a Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 51.2k iso. Baum im Sonnenuntergang

Before the night there is a time

when one can watch the dark descend

it's everyday outside the door

plus every day a different bend

This time is when the darkness comes

gently in the western sky

each new day a unique scene

of beauty one cannot deny

Must have overlooked this one.

BODY LANGUAGE/THE INVISIBLE WOMAN by Wicked Eiren

This is the first time Wicked is showing her work at an SL Art Gallery. and of course I am super proud she choose Nitroglobus.

Proud to present this intriguing and very emotional exhibition by Wicked who with these images asks for acknowledgement of/attention for her situation, and that of many others in the world who are suffering from Central Sensitivity Syndromes (CSSs), an umbrella term which houses a series of complex chronic diseases like myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), fibromyalgia, and many more.

A diseases that you can not see, but which needs to be heard, the silent scream!

The opening party @ dido's part of Nitroglobus will be Monday, 27 June, 12 PM SLT, starting with a short contemporary ballet by Milena and Lalitha Carbone, followed by tunes of DJ Niels.

Special thanks to Adwehe for her awesome light art, specially created for this exhibition.

Poem by Toni Blackman selected by Wicked:

'I am an invisible woman.

Not because people refuse to see me.

They know I am here.

But it's as if my (pain) detracts from my existence.

My presence too often mistaken for absence.

I am an invisible woman.'

More info about the artist, the exhibition and the disease mentioned above: touch the info giver at entrance point in the gallery.

This was the final wonderful sunset of our recent trip, and was taken from the deck of our cabin in Kingston SE looking across what was an amazingly calm sea.

Happy Nice Wonderful Clouds Tuesday!

(Will catch up soon with flickr followers - just home from the trip today, and I have 2700 photos to sort through - and that was after deleting about 2000 along the way!)

Our neighbour over our back fence has this wonderful Wollemi pine growing in his garden. This tree species was only known in fossil records until a small number (less than 100) were found growing in the Wollemi National Park in New South Wales in Australia in 1994. It is a very old species dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. Some interesting information is available on Wikipedia.

This particular specimen is about 10 feet tall. Last year, it was looking quite sick and slightly burnt looking, but it has recovered well this year.

Between storms, rain, and lockdown, I am on the hunt for interesting local photographic subjects. There is always something around!

Happy Gorgeous Green Thursday!

A great morning if you are a storm lover. Bolt from the blue lightning, near Artemida, east of Athens, Greece, early morning of 03.07.2021. It was an amazing night with NLCs (recorded for the first time in GR), red sprites and a close TS with amazing BFBs. Sigma Art 20 mm, f/4, iso 1000.

Looking like a scene from Hitchcock's "The Birds", this dead tree always attracted a good crowd of little cormorants and always made for an interesting sunrise silhouette.

This is an unusual view of the lovely old Mersey Bluff lighthouse at Devonport in Tasmania. It is usually photographed during the day when its striking bright red and white vertical stripes stand out against the blue sky. But I was there at sunset and only had one camera with me - the 3D World medium format stereo film camera. And, it only had one shot left on the film! I seem to recall waiting patiently for almost half an hour for the light to be just right for my intended silhouette sunset shot. While I was waiting, there was another fellow there with the latest (in 2006) digital camera and he had taken maybe 200 shots in that time just like I do myself these days).

This shot is part of what will be a large number of slide scans that I will be posting from my old medium format stereo slide collection. They are mostly from Tasmania and taken between 2006 and 2009. Generally, they will be in the original square format, but just occasionally I will present a wider looking crop. I'll post another picture of the camera in question soon.

Original slide scanned with a Canon R10, RF 24-240 lens and Nisi close up lens attachment.

The sky took on a dramatic look the other night as I took this slight patch of sunset colour while facing due east! The western sky was actually dull and grey.

Here is one more lightning capture I've selected from the thunderstorms on the 21st of June 2025 over Athens. The details at the branches of the bolts and the feature on the upper right corner where the bolt crosses through the cloud, were two decisive factors in order to choose this one over others. At the left side, one can observe the southern edge of mt. Imittos.

Taken on 21.06.2025, in Athens, Greece, looking southwards. Canon 5Dmk4, Sigma Art 35 mm, f/3.5, 1/25'', iso 100, ND filter used.

A storm moves east as the sun sets.

I saw the pink cloud formation from the front window, but when I went outside, there was a lot more. Moments later it was just a dark gray mass.

Used photoshop only to bring out the grass and to lower the exposure about 1/2 stop.

Nordlicht in Schweden

Some typical south coast scenery and wildlife near Port MacDonnell on South Australia's most southerly point. The gulls were busy as several visitors disposed of their excess lunchtime chips (and the gulls consequently disposed of their own excess all over my car!!!)

Unusually high number of contrails today.

Taken May 18th 2018. I had traveled to Minnesota for the birth of my granddaughter and was flying back to Atlanta when this was snapped.
