Several red sprites were observed and recorded during the night of Jun. 25, 2022, over the thunderstorms of central and northern Aegean Sea. TLEs (like red sprites) appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms. This event had a faint "green GhOST" as well. I've used a Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 51.2k iso. An Australian pelican looking like it is soaring right up among the clouds and showing off its amazing wingspan.
Happy Nice Wonderful Clouds Tuesday!
.....not from the Land of the Long White Cloud. This is actually from Twilight Bay near Esperance in Western Australia. The coastline is full of amazing scenery and vivid colours. The sea has an amazing intensity of blue, mainly due to the pure white sand on the beaches there.
Having said that, I did also have a polarising filter too which certainly brought out the colours.

A nice reward for taking the dogs out for a walk. We arrived just in time at our turn around point for a gorgeous sunset.
Yet another colourful sunrise worth rising early for at Mannum on the Murray river in South Australia.
Happy Nice Wonderful Clouds Tuesday!
The granite boulders in the park are huge and the vegetation is quite varied. The deserts of Southern California are spectacular to a desert lover like me.
Thank you all so very much for your comments and faves, but most of all I thank you for just taking the time to look. I appreciate each and every one of you! Gracias. Merci. Danke. Obrigado. Grazie. Go raibh maith agat. Tapadh leat. Gratias tibi.

I was going to take many more shots from the Mannum lookout, showing the fine river views, but one glance at the coming rain told me it was time to pack up and head for cover. Definitely not a day for the convertibles!

Another morning at Mannum on the Murray River, and another wonderfully different sunrise! The trees on the distant horizon made an amazing silhouette as the sun popped up.

A coastal scene taken looking toward Middle Island (left) and Merri Island (right) on the south coast of Warrnambool in Victoria.
In actual fact, it was quite windy and the waves were very choppy, but the 10 stop ND filter did its thing and calmed everything down.
On the left island, there are a small number of black faced cormorants who were very cooperative in staying still! They will feature in the next shot which I took while this long exposure was happening.
Nature puts on some wonderful art sometimes.
Another Murray River sunrise. Every one of them is worth the early start.
Happy Nice Wonderful Clouds Tuesday!
As we are just coming into another active time for the sun to produce lots of opportunities for aurora to appear, I dug through the archives for one of the last times the sun was this active and produced a large number of great sights around a decade ago.
This was a stitched panorama of three or four images taken at a great dark sky site near Stawell in Victoria, just to the north of the wonderfully dark Grampians National Park. At these latitudes, we often just get the topmost red colours but they still make for a wonderful sight.
The unmistakeable silhouette of an Australian Pelican in flight over the Murray River during another golden Riverland sunrise.
Mammatus clouds from yesterday's storm. The flagpole was very high and I wasn't able to leave it out of my frame as I was on a hill, so I tried to embed it in the best possible way with these clouds which were hanging over me.

I haven't gotten a good photo of a full sun halo before with iPhones. I tried a panoramic shot this time with better results. Got creative with contrast, etc.
A perfect start to a perfect driving day with a beautiful old Mercedes Benz 190 SL from around 1956 - a most appropriate date for the setting here. The scene is the start of the rowing course on Lake Wendouree in Ballarat where the rowing events were held for the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia.

A shot from last summer of a sudden storm that came down from the north west. It turned out to be all show, and no go with very little rain and just a little lightning and a few rumbles of thunder. It certainly looked the part though!

Someone was clearly trying to catch a little sun - taken at sunset on Broome's glorious Cable Beach in the north west of Western Australia.
I was lucky to grab a shot with no people in it as the beach was actually quite crowded and full of four wheel drives and crowds of sunset watchers.
Original colour slide was taken in 2004 with a 3D twin rig using two Canon 300V SLR cameras and using Fuji Sensia 100 slide film. Scanned with a Canon R10, RF 24-240 lens and Nisi close up attachment.
The foggy sunrise brought with it some heavy traffic for the little black cormorants.

A blazing intense sunset popped out tonight just as I received news of our flickr friend Graham Little who lives over in the West but isn't doing too well at the moment. One for you my friend.
The last 2 days of August tried to "compensate" for a long record-warm and dry summer. The lightning activity was great on both days and I had some captures despite the daylight. Even while the storm was moving away and the sun was well above us, quadruple lightning bolts like this one, were "hanging" around. Taken on 30.08.2024, in Athens, Greece. Canon 5Dmk4, Sigma Art 14 mm, f/4, 1/25'', iso 100, NiSi ND64 nano IR filter.

The Murray river and Mannum in South Australia are very much in the news at the moment due to the rising floodwaters and huge volume of water flowing downstream. This older view from when levels were normal shows a lagoon that is to one side of the main river itself and also a bird sanctuary with a small jetty leading out to a bird hide. All of this jetty would be very much under water by now. The sunrise shown here from around six months ago was an amazing one with deep glows appearing all over the sky from east to west. The cabin deck that this was taken from would also be very close to going under. Many of the other cabins in the park have been temporarily moved to higher ground and I believe the main street is closed due to a huge levee being built up the middle of the road. Let's hope it all passes soon and their lives can get back to normal, and that they are all high and dry for Christmas.
