Today's midwest storm ended in Jefferson County with an incredible display of pink and silver mammatus like cotton candy, seen here at Ginny's Kitchen and Custards in Barnhart, MO.

Dangerous bolt from the blue lightning, striking on the ground, ~15 km away from the storm's core. I guess, someone there, was not happy at all. Athens, Greece, 10.06.2021. Canon 5Dmk4, f/8, iso 100, NiSi ND nano filter 64, Sigma Art 14 mm.

After dinner drive home, and as the sun set, we were gifted clouds with silver linings. Is that a cross? ✝️
Four bolts at once. The plethora of branches and the low cloud base around them, as well as the reflection of lightning on the wet rooftops, made me choose this as one of my favorite shots from that night. One can also observe, by zooming in, the upward streamer on the rooftop where the central bolt (the one closer to me) hits.
Shooting with f/11 and considering the distance, can give an impression of how strong the flashes were.

Maybe I am just seeing things. Maybe I watch too many Star Wars movies - I had just watched all of the old Star Wars collection before coming on this trip.
All I could see here was Jabba the Hutt.
Taken from my usual position on the deck of our cabin, on the edge of the Murray River in Mannum on a wonderfully stormy afternoon.
A wonderful misty pre-dawn scene on my favourite stretch of the Murray River at Mannum. Every sunrise was a treat of ever changing colours and wildlife. A little mist and fog always helps too!
Glow from tonight's visible sunset - It's been a few days of cloud cover with the weather patterns - the color was absolutely delightful with the various cloud formations overhead - the last of the sun's rays left a beautiful pink tinge on the bottoms of the clouds.

52 Weeks: 2026 Edition: Week 13: Golden Hour Glow
A small single and not too straight Norfolk Island Pine taken at sunset on the foreshore at Kingston SE in South Australia. Its slight lean made it look to my eyes like a small yacht sailing into the breeze.
Yet another colourful sunrise worth rising early for at Mannum on the Murray river in South Australia.

This single shaft of sunlight tracked its way across the whole horizon and for a moment, felt like a searchlight, seeking something. It was a little eerie as the cloud was quite quick in its movement and so the beam of light also moved quickly.
As the street lamps came to life tonight, the sun went down over the local rooftops in one brief final fiery blast of colour!
Another morning at Mannum on the Murray River, and another wonderfully different sunrise! The trees on the distant horizon made an amazing silhouette as the sun popped up.

A power line follows a country road at sunset. This line, with many 1950s era porcelain power insulators, will be rebuilt in the very near future.

A pair of Chevrolet Corvette Stingrays in 1/18th scale by Norev, set against the wonderful backdrop of a peaceful sunset at Port Germein on the Spencer Gulf, in South Australia.
The new one is the convertible on the right.
Nature puts on some wonderful art sometimes.
Another Murray River sunrise. Every one of them is worth the early start.

Sunset on the Missouri 51 bridge at Chester, IL. The new bridge ribbon cutting will happen on 7/11, with the bridge opening to traffic in the near future.

A lightning bolt serves as a momentary natural electric "division" between the right and the left part of a dense growing rainshaft, during a noon thunderstorm. As we are just coming into another active time for the sun to produce lots of opportunities for aurora to appear, I dug through the archives for one of the last times the sun was this active and produced a large number of great sights around a decade ago.
This was a stitched panorama of three or four images taken at a great dark sky site near Stawell in Victoria, just to the north of the wonderfully dark Grampians National Park. At these latitudes, we often just get the topmost red colours but they still make for a wonderful sight.
Mammatus clouds from yesterday's storm. The flagpole was very high and I wasn't able to leave it out of my frame as I was on a hill, so I tried to embed it in the best possible way with these clouds which were hanging over me.

I guess this is my new favorite. Green hailcore and funnel on the background and a lightning bolt on the foreground completing the scene. This is from the supercell on 24.07.2026 in Athens. Shot with Canon 5DmkIV, NiSi ND64 filter, iso 160, 1/25'', f/2.8 and Sigma Art lens 14 mm.

.....not from the Land of the Long White Cloud. This is actually from Twilight Bay near Esperance in Western Australia. The coastline is full of amazing scenery and vivid colours. The sea has an amazing intensity of blue, mainly due to the pure white sand on the beaches there.
Having said that, I did also have a polarising filter too which certainly brought out the colours.

A shot from last summer of a sudden storm that came down from the north west. It turned out to be all show, and no go with very little rain and just a little lightning and a few rumbles of thunder. It certainly looked the part though!

A coastal scene taken looking toward Middle Island (left) and Merri Island (right) on the south coast of Warrnambool in Victoria.
In actual fact, it was quite windy and the waves were very choppy, but the 10 stop ND filter did its thing and calmed everything down.
On the left island, there are a small number of black faced cormorants who were very cooperative in staying still! They will feature in the next shot which I took while this long exposure was happening.
A few nights ago, this sudden late glow appeared on the horizon after we had thought it was going to be another dull cloudy sundown. The colour lingered for ages until lights took over and stars appeared.
This was taken shortly before the previous post and may well have been the bolt that started the grassfire!
(I later found out that there were dozens of grassfires started by this storm all through the south east of South Australia and around Mount Gambier.)
I was going to take many more shots from the Mannum lookout, showing the fine river views, but one glance at the coming rain told me it was time to pack up and head for cover. Definitely not a day for the convertibles!

Dramatic sky at the Thames Barrier … There is a nice park and cafe next to it. Best to reach taking DLR train towards Woolwich and get out at Pontoon Dock
