Columniform red sprites over the thunderstorms of the Ionian sea and W. Greece as seen from W. Attica during the night of Oct. 11, 2021. Intense parent lightning flash is obvious too. Through my long lens, this distant storm looked amazing in the last rays of a setting sun, with the first layer of cloud already down in the shadows while the upper levels of the stormcloud still caught the peachy sunset tones.
Another bolt from the blue lightning, near Artemida, east of Athens, Greece, early morning of 03.07.2021. It was an amazing night with NLCs (recorded for the first time in GR), red sprites and a close TS with amazing BFBs. Sigma Art 85 mm, f/4, iso 800.

Even the birdlife seemed to be gazing at this cloudscape that developed for a few minutes on an unusually grey and foggy sunrise. I tried converting this to monochrome, but there was no difference, so this is the full colour version!
A shot from a few years ago, taken from Weeroona Island just north of Port Pirie facing north across the sparkling calm waters of the Spencer Gulf in South Australia.
Bolts from the blue, inside the city. Impressive but also dangerous. The left one hit the roof of a hotel, near the pool, from what I've searched. Imagine being in the pool at that specific moment.

Just 60 metres below, everything was a total grey-out with the whole Murray River area blanketed in fog, so I went up to the Mannum lookout and just managed to find some sun over the top of the fog.
A perfect start to a perfect driving day with a beautiful old Mercedes Benz 190 SL from around 1956 - a most appropriate date for the setting here. The scene is the start of the rowing course on Lake Wendouree in Ballarat where the rowing events were held for the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia.

This was the second night in a row (Nov. 10-11) with TLEs (Transient Luminous Events), this time over the thunderstorms at the Aegean Sea. But, before that, I was treated with some close thunderstorms and some beautiful lightning bolts occurred. Observe this one, heading for... Orion!
Notice the corona discharge with its distinct blue/purple color at the edges of the bolt. These purple filaments/streamers are created due to high values of the electric field (high enough to ionize air molecules, mostly nitrogen).
The moon can be seen behind the clouds, on the left side.
For this one, I've used a Sigma Art 20 mm lens, f/1.4 @ f/5.6 for 10'' with iso 500.

Yes, tickets sell out quickly for the evening sunset show here in Mount Gambier! It is mostly attended by starlings, with an occasional magpie getting lucky with a centre, front row seat!
This is our retirement village community TV antenna that supplies the signal to 250 units! It's just as well this has no effect on reception! ; )

I think this was my favorite location while shooting fall color last year in the Eastern Sierras. It seemed like every time I moved my tripod; I found another wall hanger. I also thought it was cool that the aspens had different tones of orange and yellow. Another bonus was there was pretty good fishing here. Not a bad backdrop for throwing in your line while catching a few trout.

Another selected lightning bolt photo from the thunderstorms on the 4th of November 2025 over Athens. This one is from a (probably positive) lightning bolt hitting at the calm sea surface of the Saronic gulf, in front of the Ellinikon Riviera Tower. Part of the southern Athens is also visible.
Observe a fisherman's boat very close, to the right side of the lightning bolt. I'm wondering what his thoughts would have been at that specific moment. He had just left his fishing lights (see the 4 small lights on the sea surface, on the right side).
