Sunset scenery near Sonthofen in the beautiful Allgäu region

Through my long lens, this distant storm looked amazing in the last rays of a setting sun, with the first layer of cloud already down in the shadows while the upper levels of the stormcloud still caught the peachy sunset tones.

Another bolt from the blue lightning, near Artemida, east of Athens, Greece, early morning of 03.07.2021. It was an amazing night with NLCs (recorded for the first time in GR), red sprites and a close TS with amazing BFBs. Sigma Art 85 mm, f/4, iso 800.

Strong contrasts of sunny and shady spots in the Austrian Brandnertal. After showers of rain, the sun finally broke through.

The descent from Melkboden to Brand along the Palüd trail rewarded us with wonderful views! [Explored on 12 July 2025, #81]

The storm invades the city. Triple lightning accompanies the rain. There was also a lot of hail. Night of Nov. 5, 2022.

Even the birdlife seemed to be gazing at this cloudscape that developed for a few minutes on an unusually grey and foggy sunrise. I tried converting this to monochrome, but there was no difference, so this is the full colour version!

Last night's severe weather featured a lot of swirling, dark clouds in our area of northwest Illinois, but thankfully no tornadoes...

A shot from a few years ago, taken from Weeroona Island just north of Port Pirie facing north across the sparkling calm waters of the Spencer Gulf in South Australia.

Rainshafts from a thunderstorm after sunset, towards my west horizon. This one had lightning strikes 10' before this shot. Unfortunately it didn't give a last one to complete this frame. Athens, Greece, 12.06.2021.

The Merc (Mercantile National Bank) seen from the Statler Hotel rooftop bar … One of the greatest views in the Dallas city center…

I think this was my favorite location while shooting fall color last year in the Eastern Sierras. It seemed like every time I moved my tripod; I found another wall hanger. I also thought it was cool that the aspens had different tones of orange and yellow. Another bonus was there was pretty good fishing here. Not a bad backdrop for throwing in your line while catching a few trout.

Another wonderful painted sky appeared outside our front door again. Brief, but beautiful.

Happy Nice Wonderful Clouds Tuesday!

Sunsets come earlier now, but they are as beautiful as ever.

This was taken shortly before the previous post and may well have been the bolt that started the grassfire!

(I later found out that there were dozens of grassfires started by this storm all through the south east of South Australia and around Mount Gambier.)

Another selected lightning bolt photo from the thunderstorms on the 4th of November 2025 over Athens. This one is from a (probably positive) lightning bolt hitting at the calm sea surface of the Saronic gulf, in front of the Ellinikon Riviera Tower. Part of the southern Athens is also visible.

Observe a fisherman's boat very close, to the right side of the lightning bolt. I'm wondering what his thoughts would have been at that specific moment. He had just left his fishing lights (see the 4 small lights on the sea surface, on the right side).

Some of you have seen this before, but I never liked the way it looked, so I dug into the archives a bit and reprocessed it. Now it looks just as I saw it.

Thank you all so very much for your comments and faves, but most of all I thank you for just taking the time to look. I appreciate each and every one of you! Gracias. Merci. Danke. Obrigado. Grazie. Go raibh maith agat. Tapadh leat. Gratias tibi.

Dangerous bolt from the blue lightning, striking on the ground, ~15 km away from the storm's core. I guess, someone there, was not happy at all. Athens, Greece, 10.06.2021. Canon 5Dmk4, f/8, iso 100, NiSi ND nano filter 64, Sigma Art 14 mm.

This single shaft of sunlight tracked its way across the whole horizon and for a moment, felt like a searchlight, seeking something. It was a little eerie as the cloud was quite quick in its movement and so the beam of light also moved quickly.

Had dinner and fellowship at some friends recently! We ate poolside and watched the sunset.

A perfect start to a perfect driving day with a beautiful old Mercedes Benz 190 SL from around 1956 - a most appropriate date for the setting here. The scene is the start of the rowing course on Lake Wendouree in Ballarat where the rowing events were held for the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia.

WAY in the background, towers and power lines from the Hetch Hetchy power plant in Moccasin are visible.

Super fun cloud while walking

We are lucky enough to have a nice view to our west over the rooftops of the village and we can just catch a glimpse of a paddock around one kilometre away with a dozen resident cows. As I went out the front door tonight to catch the sunset rays, I briefly thought to myself how nice it would be if there was a cow in the scene. Truly, within seconds, this one read my mind perfectly and wandered along the ridge. The small flock of birds were a bonus!

I do love new car day! Christmas in July!
