A beautiful place in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico, the Gilman Tunnels were part of the former Santa Fe Northwestern Railway (SFNW) through the canyon which was used to haul lumber from the Jemez Mountains. The railway opened in 1924 but never recovered financially from the Wall Street crash of 1929. Operations ceased in 1941.

The 2007 film, 3:10 from Yuma, was partially filmed in these tunnels.

This was the night of crawlers and upward lightning. Here is an example of the latter, stemming from a wind turbine (the tiny white light on the mountain). This was an MCS lasting more than 7 hours throughout the night. Lightning frequency up to more than 1 flash per second at times and lots of hail. Athens, Greece, night of 26.09.2023.

Into the Light - Day 357 - Year 2022

---------------------------------------------------

... into night again and a chance of snow as well.

When I shot this band of storm clouds, the wind was so intense that it kept pushing me around and I was hoping it would be in focus.

Well I guess they named this storm Elliot... day started out at 53°F and is supposed to plummet to 10°F tonight. Since we already lost power for about 8 hours today, I hope the winds don't knock it out again. A constant 20-30 mph chilling wind with gusts to 45 mph are supposed to continue until Sunday.

Brr! Too quick a change for me in the scheme of things and looks like time for another blanket on the bed tonight.

Taken a year ago on the Murray river at Mannum in South Australia. Every morning held a surprise and was worth an early start to see what treats the sunrise had in store.

Looking East towards Sonora Pass and the crest of the Sierra Nevada, Tuolumne County, California. There is still some snow on the hills in the background after last week's big storm. Another storm will hit in a few hours.

Last night's sunset was a long lasting one and the colour on the horizon hung on for a long time until well after the street-lamps had taken over and the stars were visible overhead.

While I did "avoid deer while driving" while going to and from Milwaukee. I could not avoid a short chase of a South Shore freight under the wires. Thanks to friends new and old, this was a major score on my list of Chicagoland things to do. I believe this to be a Burns Harbor to BRC Clearing Yard turn job.

They are operating on a portion of the CSSS&SB "East Chicago bypass." Opened in fall of 1956, this 5-mile relocation of track was a mostly elevated right of way that eliminated 15 separate railroad grade crossings with a total of 27 diamond tracks. In addition, 22 street crossings were also eliminated. Ten minutes of running time and an improvement of on time performance were realized with the project. Also, at the same time the construction of the parallel Indiana Toll Road, seen in the background, was undertaken.

This was the first stage of what turned out to be a sunrise lasting well over an hour and coming in several distinct stages. This first stage was the very early vivid colour low on the horizon, creating some wonderful silhouettes in the distant trees. Shortly after this it went dark and grey again before the next stage - stay tuned next week for part two.

Another view of a very brief burst of soft colour low on the horizon that lasted 30 seconds before turning into a grey day.

The sunset just caught the tops of the passing storm-clouds, creating a very moody atmosphere.

This peaceful Riverland sunrise started with a lively display looking for all the world (to my eye) like a volcanic eruption as the lava burst forth from seams in the rock. From this, the sunrise went through many other mesmerising stages that lasted almost an hour. An amazing start to the day!

I was thoroughly enjoying watching the passing storms which were about 60km away as they drifted from west to east along the horizon. Just as the sunset started making the distant clouds glow, another storm suddenly hit us from behind. This was taken through a curtain of pouring rain, hence the slight softness of the detail. Even though I was hoping for it, the lightning bolt was a big bonus!

Later storms that evening knocked out the power for around 8 hours, but thankfully did little other damage despite dumping a sudden 40mm of rain.

A couple of silver gulls and crested terns settle in for the night on a very calm and peaceful early evening just after sunset at the end of the wonderful, long Port Germein jetty. This is facing roughly SSW with Port Pirie just out of view to the left and Whyalla on the horizon to the right, across the Spencer Gulf. Port Germein is a little visited but wonderful unspoilt seaside village just off the main highway between Port Pirie and Port Augusta in South Australia.

👎 Rejection:

On 19 August 2025, the administrator for the Flickr group "CSSS: Earth - Landscape Dominate" rejected this photo. (The acronym 'CSSS' stands for 'cloud, storm, sunset, or sunrise.) So, let's examine things. The image displays dissipating storm clouds; sunset will arrive within the hour; the beach landscape comprises half the image. So what's the problem? Unexplained nonsense.

A beautiful sunrise greeted me after a 2:30 am departure from home and several hours on the road.

Near Andover, IL

During the early morning on the 21st of Dec. 2024, several dozens of TLEs* were observed over thunderstorms at the Aegean Sea (northern as well as southeastern). This is a halo event (the faint red disk on top) with red sprites under it. One of the last events I managed to capture as the imminent sunrise was shedding light. The lights on the bottom left come from the islands of Andros, Tinos and Mykonos.

*TLEs (like red sprites) are upper atmospheric electrical discharges (cold plasma to be precise) and they appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms (e.g. red sprites appear at altitudes of 40-90 km).

For this one, I've used a #Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 40 k iso.

Check our recent #paper about TLEs from Greek-based observers, here: doi.org/10.3390/environsciproc2023026009.

A different viewpoint and time of day for a view of the Nut at Stanley on Tasmania's north-west coast.

Original colour slide was taken in 1997 with a Pentax Z-70 SLR. Lens was a Sigma 28-80mm zoom. Film was possibly Fuji Sensia 100.

This colour slide was scanned with a Canon R10, Canon RF 24-240 zoom lens with Nisi close up attachment. Cool white LED backlighting.

After news reports and some emailed official Aurora alerts, I could not resist going out in hope of catching some colour. Usually, in the past, I have had to head for some serious dark sky sites, but this one was taken tonight in suburban Mount Gambier just 500 metres from home. I was amazed that I could even see a dim glow with the naked eye and equally amazed to see the colour overpower all of the light pollution from the whole of Mount Gambier directly in front of me. I am sure flickr will be full of amazing aurora shots from this recent storm, so this is my contribution!

I would have liked a wider angle lens, but this 24mm on the R10 is actually the equivalent of 38mm. As soon as I realised there was colour in the sky, I was in a hurry and did not want to spend time to swap the camera / lens combo for something wider.

This was the top of one of many storms that passed us by. I had a look on our weather radar and it was around 50km east of us over the state border in Victoria.

Happy Nice Wonderful Clouds Tuesday!

Originally taken in 1997, this black and white shot was a rescue job from a pretty badly lit colour slide. I could not quite get the colours looking like they should due to the brightly backlit cloud, so I transformed it into a more timeless black and white look. Taken at the peaceful little town of Franklin on the Huon River in Tasmania, looking north, the hills in the background are all part of the mountains that form a backdrop to the west of Hobart, including Mount Wellington. They all had a wonderful dusting of mid winter snow.

Original shot was taken with a Pentax Z-70 SLR. Lens was a Sigma 28-80mm zoom. Film was possibly Fuji Sensia 100.

This colour slide was scanned with a Canon R10, Canon RF 24-240 zoom lens with Nisi close up attachment. Cool white LED backlighting.

One night while sitting in our lounge room down in Burnie, Tasmania, we started to notice everything turning pink outside the windows. I grabbed the only camera at hand which was the big medium format film 3D camera, and grabbed this single shot from our front garden. It was changing fast and this was all gone and just another dull grey evening within 20 seconds!

It was just a mix of a briefly vivid sunset behind me shining through a very narrow gap in the clouds lighting up some unusually low cloud that had rolled in over us leaving a very shaded deep blue sky beyond the lower level of the low clouds. It made for a momentarily eerie scene.

Being such a hasty shot, I didn't have time to grab a tripod, and from memory, the exposure time was very slow - perhaps just 1/15th of a second, hence it is not perfectly focussed or steady, but I just had to grab something from this single amazing minute of colour.

Original colour slide was taken around 2007 with a 3D World medium format stereo film camera using Fuji Provia 100F colour slide film. Scanned with a Canon R10 with RF24-240mm lens and Nisi close up attachment.
