I know, I know...I said don't take broken irrigation stuff from the dumpsters after a freeze. Last time I grabbed a bunch of cracked solenoid valves and wasted a bunch of time when I realized how they had already cracked from a hard freeze in December. Well, this one might be different. This is a irrigation controller which looks kind of ancient, but might have some life left in it.

After using this controller and the 400 step/rev motors for months purely as a guiding system I finally started working on the various algorithms needed to turn it into a full-blown GOTO system. This took months of work but I rarely applied more than a few hours a day to the project with long spells of thinking and doing other things. During tuning the PIC In-Circuit Serial Reprogramming interface was installed (the ribbon cable immediately to the left of the 40 pin PIC and the PICkit 2 programming pod is show). The new controller mounts where the original slow-speed stepper system was installed. The leftmost cable at the bottom is for the handbox, while the right cable at the bottom is connected to a RS232 to TTL serial converter (little blue PCB mounted upside down). The bare PCB was about $28 ($80+ for a set of three proto-boards). The PIC chip is about $2.50. The RTC chip is about $3. The motor driver daughter boards sell for about $10 each. The serial converter board was about $3. Connectors and the case plus misc. resistors and capacitors come to about $40. The software implements the basic Celestron NexStar protocol, as documented at the Celestron support site. The system has been successfully tested with both Cartes du Ciel and Stellarium.

A Ray Wilson Micro analog keyboard controller. took me a day to make the wooden case my first attempt at such a thing very proud, and a day to assemble the circuit and electronics great little kit !

A pretty awesome piece of programmable hardware. The active development community is a huge bonus too.

Here's the time-lapse controller that Gary is building me for my Sony Alpha camera. The little black boxes are the timer settings (from 1 to 99 seconds) and the little white plug goes into the 'remote socket' on the camera.

A sculpture piece I made using multiple broken game controllers. Based around the idea of touch, so the viewer is invited to press buttons and wiggle joysticks.

PlayStation Move controller. The ball is surprisingly squishy, and the whole thing is very light.

I faced the wires down and made an effort to seal the blank cover of the replacement controller with silicon. Wiring pushes against the motor this way and it is not as neat, but hopefully it's waterproof.

Arduino UNO platform. 40 makro frames splitted into one.

I've seen many variations of this shot. I thought these came out well, so I posted them.

The trigger potentiometers on the Xbox 360 controller spitting voltage to the Arduino analog inputs, which in turn churns out a voltage via a 12-bit DAC. So I can take the voltage levels from the controller and massage them into the ranges I want.

The 3DO’s gamepad is a fairly run-of-the-mill controller, featuring a Genesis-style set of 3 action buttons, yet SNES style L/R shoulder buttons. The middle buttons, typically called Start and Select, are labeled “X” and “P” here. Of particular note are the CD controls scattered around the controller, with the “Stop” square on X and “Play/Pause” triangle and bars on the P button, and fast forward, rewind, and skip icons circling the D-Pad.
