Built quickly, outside of Addis, the new suburbs. It reminded me what i saw iin some chinese suburbs, or even in Singapore on the way to airport: hundreds of buildings, same shape, same colors...In the center of Addis, less and less old houses, everything is destroyed. The brand new capital is rising up. Some say that 90 millions people live in Ethiopia. Invest in cement!

About a week ago I met Mannix Flynn who was protest against the renewal of BID under the banner “WE ARE NOT DUBLIN TOWN”. As various parties are now exchanging legal letters I will not comment further on this issue. I was a bit surprised that he was not too happy with the LUAS Cross City project. Unlike Mannix I am in favour of the project mainly because I use nothing but Public Transport to get around and I am a big fan of trams and trains.

I do admit that I am really fed up with the ongoing construction work that has greatly impacted my area for many years … my photographs will give you some idea as to what it has been like.

Mannix described the trams as monstrosities [meaning awful rather than big]. Many people may not be aware that the new trams will be extended versions of what are currently being used. The new trams will consist of nine sections rather five making them more like trains and there is a certain amount of logic to this because what is currently being built is a pre-metro.

A pre-metro is a tramway or light railway which includes segments built to rapid transit standards, generally as part of a process of conversion to a metro-standards railway usually by the construction of tunnels in the central city area. The concept of the systematic use of tunnels to carry tram lines under city centres was devised in Germany during the 1960s when, instead of building expensive entire metro systems immediately, the idea of building only the city centre tunnels at first was implemented. They could be used by trams in the short term, but the intention in the long run would still be the conversion to full underground-based rapid transit systems. The idea spread to other European countries in the 1970s, especially Belgium, where such systems were named premetros.[ Also portion of Vienna's U2 subway line (Rathaus-Museumsquartier) is a converted underground tramway line built in 1966.

I am not sure if the final system will actually include tunnels but there will be two sections Brides Glen to Charlemount and Broadstone to Broombridge that already meet light rail standards [these sections use dedicated track separated from any other types of traffic]. I am not 100% sure about the section between Sandyford and Charlemont.

I purchased my apartment 21 years ago and at the time was assured that the area would be restored to it’s former glory and of course the opposite was the result. I am very unhappy with what has happened to Henrietta Street, in particular, and the immediate area in general.

For years I have complained to anyone who would listen about the fact that many of the buildings on Henrietta Street were not being maintained and now that something is actually happening I am annoyed by the noise which wakens me early in the mornings because most of the action is currently taking place at the rear of 15-16 Henrietta Street which is effectively across the street [a very narrow street] from my bedroom window.

The project appears to be extensive in scope as large project management offices have been installed on what was badly maintained parking space on Henrietta Place [appears on old city maps as Henrietta Land]. As the parking area has been a base for much ongoing anti-social behaviour I would be happy if it gets built on and I am willing to tolerated the construction noise

This development has caught me by surprise I don’t actually know what is happening but I have found some interesting links which may [or may not] be relevant.

Update: I also came across the following which may actually be relevant:

“Following the demolition in the 1950s of one half of a 4 bay Georgian house at no.15 Henrietta Street, this historically significant street in North inner city Dublin was left with a missing tooth. In 2009, Dublin City Council held an open international competition to propose a new project for the site for which we were awarded first prize. At no.16 Henrietta Street, we proposed to construct an open and flexible brick structure to contain a series of pipe making workshops for Na Píobairí Uilleann, the association of Uilleann pipers located in the adjacent no.15. We also proposed a small theatre to the mews for the performance of Irish music.

Externally, the distinguishing characteristic of the surrounding Georgian structures is their unadorned structural facades. In order to successfully place a new structure in this context, it must be a timeless structure which transcends the passing trends, a building which appears like it has always been there and that it will always be there. The proposed building to no.16 is just that, a direct expression of its unique brick vaulted structure. It appeals to the fundaments of the context rather than its formal characteristics. Its thick brick fin walls act as a buttress to the visual mass of the rest of the block making a powerful and expressive end to the terrace, while referencing a Sullivanesque extension at the opposite end of the block. Each floor is a completely open plan created by a robust and beautiful structure of brick vaults. To the Henrietta street side, we proposed to rebuild the complete façade of the original house so that one might reinstate the Henrietta streetscape, but in a way that is suggestive of the evolution of the site through the use of blind brick windows- a common practice in Georgian buildings utilized for turning corners and completing symmetries.

The project was granted Planning Permission in October of 2011 and is currently in pre tender stage with Na Píobairí Uilleann.”

I AM AWAKENED AT 7AM EVERY WEEKDAY [BY CONSTRUCTION WORK DIRECTLY OUTSIDE MY BEDROOM WINDOW]

I cannot believe how long this project has been in progress. One of the builders told me that they will be onsite until mid-2017 and that did surprise especially as a development that I had hoped for was not included. The area where the red containers are located [see my photographs] has been a derelict area for many years and has been a base for serious and often dangerous anti-social activity. My understanding was that this derelict area was to be built on as part of the museum project but according to the builder it is a separate project to be undertaken by Na Píobairí Uilleann and he suspects that it will not happen because of a lack of funds.

Henrietta Street is considered to be one of the first and finest planned Georgian streets in Dublin. Its development spans 1729-1758. Amongst its qualities is the rare level of its preservation both as a street and in terms of individual houses, in particular the interiors. The street has survived in spite of its various and in some cases, deeply destructive incarnations.

We campaigned for years to have Henrietta Place resurfaced and after about fifteen years the road was resurfaced twice within a period of about six months and the work was completed shortly before the builders arrived onsite to begin work on the museum. I am not too confident about the quality of the street surface after the builders depart.

To me this image illustrates the alarming state of affairs in the Dutch landscape, specifically the apparent visionless cluttering of it. Too many of the original agricultural grasslands, grazed by cattle, are turned into ad hoc business parks and uniformly looking new housing districts [Vinex wijken] full of petty-bourgeois retro architecture. An overall vision or greater scheme seems to be lacking. Where does the urban area begin and where the open landscape? Which areas can be built and which are to stay green? The Netherlands are too a small country to allow these kind of uninspired expansions to continue.

Bau eines Parkhauses (Hochgarage).

As you can see from my photographs work has resumed on the multi-million Greystones harbour and marina development project, with the first of more than 350 new homes expected to be offered for sale by April 2016. Because of the weather I did not photograph the new houses. The project has already seen the old Victorian era harbour replaced by a new structure with south and north piers, a large marina and ongoing work on five new clubhouses for sea scouts, divers, sailors, rowers and anglers. Also included in the project is a coastguard station, a new town square, a 16-acre public park, a new beach and marine-related shops and leisure facilities. It should be interesting to see if the ‘Public Areas’ are truly public and if the remain so for more than a year or two … I say this because there are many signs indicating that Fishing, Swimming or Jumping was not allowed. I will visit again later in the year, assuming that the weather improves.
