The area around my apartment has been effectively a building site for three or four years and I am really pleased by the fact the majority of projects will be completed by the end of this year.
The major project with the biggest impact on my living environment is the Luas Cross City project but the good news for me is that the working date for opening the new route to passengers is December 9th/10th. Of course I do not know if the service it self will have unexpected negative social impacts but I am hoping that if there are any they will be more than compensated for by the positives. It would appear that property prices are increasing but as I do not wish to move this is not really relevant to me [except for an increase in property tax]
There will be two tram stops on O’Connell Street.
The GPO Stop will be located within the median of O’Connell Street Lower, north of Middle Abbey Street and will be conveniently located to provide interchange with the Luas Red Line at the Abbey Street stop. This is an important description because it contains a bit of information that might surprise some people. The common belief is that the purpose of the Cross-City was to connect the Red Line and the Green Line services but this is not actually true from a service point of view because users will need to interchange between the lines near the GPO

One of thousands of press adverts issued by London's Underground (the group that included much of the capital's bus and tram systems) and their successor after 1933, London Transport. The press adverts were usually highly considered and are often wonderful examples of typography.
this little item, with its border of shovels emphasising construction and excavation, is telling ofthe start of work on a much needed extension to the tube network that was a hard fought win by the Underground Group in the face of considerable opposition from the local mainline railway, the London & North Eastern Railway who saw this new line as a potential rival, and abstraction from, their suburban lines in north London. The LNER would, after the 1933 reorganisation of transport in London, form part of the "Pool" that would enable a more coherent view of railway provision to be undertaken - not so in the late 1930s when the lure of the 'modern' electric tubes as against the fairly down at heel steam suburban trains was very obvious!
The other pressing need for this extension was for the Underground group to be able to manage the 'Finsbury Park muddle' as it was known. The original Piccadilly Railway terminated at this station and very large numbers of people transferred to main line trains, trams and buses (often using the Group's own combined tickets) that served the busy and expanding northern suburbs of London. The Cockfosters extension was part of a great modernisation of the whole line - this extension matched by one west of Hammersmith and with many reconstructed central area stations such as Holborn, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Green Park. It opened in 1932/33 and included many of Charles Holden's modernist stations, highly regarded for their contemporary architecture adding to the 'modern' look of the Underground.
The advert is not set in the company's own Johnston typeface with the exception of the logo UndergrounD bar.
this summer the university college I work at was like a construction site. Luckily I didn't have any directly part of that.
Today we are glad to represent you an impressive shot of our #heavyequipment performing some #zerocycle works on site back in 2016. This kind of trench work was used for the tower crane foundation.
The London Underground tube station at Tottenham Court Road, first opened for Central line services in 1900 with the 'Northern line' joining it in 1907 and having under gone various changes in the last century, is now being massively reconstructed to allieviate conditions that were pretty grim for both passengers and staff. New entrances, ticket halls, escalators and platform links are being constructed - alongside the wholly new Crossrail facilities that come into use in three years time. It is a massive job. I went on a site inspection so these are taken legitimately!
This is the closed eastbound Central line platform that is hoarded off until December 2015 whilst new tunnel rings are placed to allow staircases and new access routes to be built. Seen here - the famous, or infamous, Paolozzi murals of the 1984 refurbishment - that will remain. Contrary to all lot of internet interest in these murals (understandable in many ways) we've worked very hard to ensure that the vast majority of these will survive with some sections being relocated due to the works but much of what is seen here will be cleaned and repaired.
A japanese construction place is always surounded by lights, warning signs, more warning signs and if there is somewhere there working at least one guy taking care nobody walks into it.

This was done in July 2013. This was the 3rd house I was remodeling from LL, and I found myself a bit bored and didn't want to work on it very often. So I brought the Hobbits in to liven things up ... it worked! I was able to finish it much faster!

Scarcity & Creativity Studio is a masters course in architecture at The Oslo School of Architecture & Design, in which I participated this winter/spring. This is a so-called "design and build" studio, where students get the chance to realize their own projects, for real clients. This semester we built a sauna w/ outdoor areas for the future art and culture production centre by the owner of Villa Lofoten, in Kleivan, Vestvågøy.

Although this looks like a domestic scene, this young woman is actually a construction worker at a building site. She works for hours in the hot sun carrying gravel to make concrete.
Bandhavgargh, Madhya Pradesh. Rural Indian women do a surprising amount of hard physical labour in the hot sun, from before dawn to late at night. Their colourful and delicate traditional dress seemed to jar with the dirty sweaty work, but they seemed happy enough and engaged in friendly banter with me. They were also at ease with being photographed.

Lost Soul put up a metal plate next to their roller piece in Köpenicker Str., Kreuzberg. It is an exact replica of that piece. As there a house is built now, the original, which is many years old, will soon be gone.
I could be wrong but this is/was locally known as the Long Stone. If you search for the “Long Stone” in Google it is most likely that you will find information relating to a local pub rather than this sculpture
The Steine structure was erected in 1986 and was sculpted by Cliodhna Cussen. It was removed for a few years because of construction works associated with the new Luas cross-city tram service. The original installation included a granite inscribed plaque and a bronze plaque on a circular shaft set into granite setts arranged in eight circular bands around the principal granite shaft. The last time I photographed this the bronze plate was missing but the granite setts are still missing.
The stone is erected on a site near which stood a famous Long Stone or Steine / Steyne standing 12-14 feet high and erected by the Viking inhabitants of Dublin in the 10th or 11th centuries.
The River Liffey was much broader then and the stone actually stood close to the shoreline and perhaps marked a landing place.
The 3.35m high granite shaft is carved with two faces, one of which represents Ivor the first Viking King of Dublin who ruled in the 9th century. The other face is that of a nun and commemorates the convent of St. Mary Hogges, which stood nearby in the middle ages.
