In 2017 there will be a new tram service which will have two stops very close to my home. One will be on Lower Domnick Street and the other just in front of the Bus Depot in Broadstone. Of the two the one at Broadstone should be of greatest interest to me as it will only a two or three minute walk [assuming that I can go through Kings Inns].

Connection of the new Granegegorman campus on the new line is very important, and there will be in excess of 20,000 students using the service.

The old railway line that ran through Dublin city included a stop at Broadstone and at Harcourt St. The latter line was preserved over the years after being closed down in the 1950s, which made it available for the RPA to use during the green Luas line construction. A similar scenario will occur with the Broadstone facilities near Constitution Hill.

In the city centre, trams are planned to run on street, but starting from the north west of the inner-city trams will run in a trench and under roads on the disused Broombridge railway alignment.

The plan includes pedestrian access and lifts from Irish Rail’s Broombridge Station to the Luas stop beside it, and vehicle access from Broombridge Road to the stations, including a set down area for buses, taxis and car, as well as bicycle parking.

At Broadstone the relocation of the Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann bus depots was expected to be needed, although it is unclear if this is part of the current plan. At least some destruction of the depot building is planned.

A light railway depot to service and store trams is planned in the area beside Broombridge Station and the Royal Canal.

There is a Marian Statue located in front of the old station building but I have been unable to find out if it will remain at its current location.

Wuppertal-Elberfeld: The heart of the city is a mess... But only for a while. The major reconstruction work which is going on at the moment will reshape the the most central area of Wuppertal. The best thing is: No historic buildings have to be sacrifeced (since they are already gone).

About a week ago I met Mannix Flynn who was protest against the renewal of BID under the banner “WE ARE NOT DUBLIN TOWN”. As various parties are now exchanging legal letters I will not comment further on this issue. I was a bit surprised that he was not too happy with the LUAS Cross City project. Unlike Mannix I am in favour of the project mainly because I use nothing but Public Transport to get around and I am a big fan of trams and trains.

I do admit that I am really fed up with the ongoing construction work that has greatly impacted my area for many years … my photographs will give you some idea as to what it has been like.

Mannix described the trams as monstrosities [meaning awful rather than big]. Many people may not be aware that the new trams will be extended versions of what are currently being used. The new trams will consist of nine sections rather five making them more like trains and there is a certain amount of logic to this because what is currently being built is a pre-metro.

A pre-metro is a tramway or light railway which includes segments built to rapid transit standards, generally as part of a process of conversion to a metro-standards railway usually by the construction of tunnels in the central city area. The concept of the systematic use of tunnels to carry tram lines under city centres was devised in Germany during the 1960s when, instead of building expensive entire metro systems immediately, the idea of building only the city centre tunnels at first was implemented. They could be used by trams in the short term, but the intention in the long run would still be the conversion to full underground-based rapid transit systems. The idea spread to other European countries in the 1970s, especially Belgium, where such systems were named premetros.[ Also portion of Vienna's U2 subway line (Rathaus-Museumsquartier) is a converted underground tramway line built in 1966.

I am not sure if the final system will actually include tunnels but there will be two sections Brides Glen to Charlemount and Broadstone to Broombridge that already meet light rail standards [these sections use dedicated track separated from any other types of traffic]. I am not 100% sure about the section between Sandyford and Charlemont.

There is an interesting gender division of labour in road construction. The men seem to do the skilled work with machinery and the young women seem to do the unskilled manual work. You can see them in the background here.

This set of photos was taken in April 2015 not 2011.

Today here comes a 2012 throwback photo on site in St.Petersburg. This time it was a large-scale redevelopment project for an old industrial area in the middle of a prestigious district of the city. It was very important to work with maximum accurancy because the demolition site was very close to city subway facilities. Nowadays instead of an old building here raised a 21 storey Gazprom tower.

As you can see from my photographs work has resumed on the multi-million Greystones harbour and marina development project, with the first of more than 350 new homes expected to be offered for sale by April 2016. Because of the weather I did not photograph the new houses. The project has already seen the old Victorian era harbour replaced by a new structure with south and north piers, a large marina and ongoing work on five new clubhouses for sea scouts, divers, sailors, rowers and anglers. Also included in the project is a coastguard station, a new town square, a 16-acre public park, a new beach and marine-related shops and leisure facilities. It should be interesting to see if the ‘Public Areas’ are truly public and if the remain so for more than a year or two … I say this because there are many signs indicating that Fishing, Swimming or Jumping was not allowed. I will visit again later in the year, assuming that the weather improves.

The area around my apartment has been effectively a building site for three or four years and I am really pleased by the fact the majority of projects will be completed by the end of this year.

The major project with the biggest impact on my living environment is the Luas Cross City project but the good news for me is that the working date for opening the new route to passengers is December 9th/10th. Of course I do not know if the service it self will have unexpected negative social impacts but I am hoping that if there are any they will be more than compensated for by the positives. It would appear that property prices are increasing but as I do not wish to move this is not really relevant to me [except for an increase in property tax]

There will be two tram stops on O’Connell Street.

The GPO Stop will be located within the median of O’Connell Street Lower, north of Middle Abbey Street and will be conveniently located to provide interchange with the Luas Red Line at the Abbey Street stop. This is an important description because it contains a bit of information that might surprise some people. The common belief is that the purpose of the Cross-City was to connect the Red Line and the Green Line services but this is not actually true from a service point of view because users will need to interchange between the lines near the GPO

Frederick “Ski” Colton Weld (1891-1944) studied art in Chicago and supported himself by working as a staff artist at an engraving house. He was inducted into the U.S. Army during the First World War where he directed a program in the art of camouflage. After the war and a failed marriage, he created stage settings and costume designs for the Roxy Theater and the New York Music Hall.

In 1936, Ski Weld became a newspaper artist for the King Feature Syndicate and, by 1937, began to paint covers for “The Ladies Home Journal” and “The Saturday Evening Post,” the world’s largest-circulation slick magazine. He also painted covers for the pulp magazine “Love Story” from Street & Smith. His last published illustration was the cover of the January 24, 1942 issue of the Post.

Razmax group is a trusted contractor for the large scale demolition projects. Back in 2006 our team used to manage the site preparation for a new #Gazprom stadium in St.Petersburg. The stadium is built instead of the old one and is about to host #FIFAWORLDCUP 2018, our goal was to dismantle an old facilities and constructions for the massive concrete works on a foundation of a new 68000-seat stadium. The main difficulty of this project was the amount of construction waste we used to recycle. Over 200 trucks were engaged in the transportation. The massive reinforced concrete foundations of an old stadium were crushed with #tyrolit hydraulic equipment without water, noise, dust or vibrations.
