King size excavator.

Most buildings of the former silk weaving mill were from second half of the 19th century. The company who owned them went out of business in 1974. After that the structure saw multiple uses. For several years they hosted an ice skating rink which was said to be one of the largest indoor rinks in Europe. There was also a dancing school, restaurants and shops in the basement. Three times the site was set on fire, non if these incidents really destroyed the buildings. Only recently a developper demolished them. First he announced to save at least the front but later he tore it down. Again a piece of industrial heritage is gone.

As you can see from my photographs work has resumed on the multi-million Greystones harbour and marina development project, with the first of more than 350 new homes expected to be offered for sale by April 2016. Because of the weather I did not photograph the new houses. The project has already seen the old Victorian era harbour replaced by a new structure with south and north piers, a large marina and ongoing work on five new clubhouses for sea scouts, divers, sailors, rowers and anglers. Also included in the project is a coastguard station, a new town square, a 16-acre public park, a new beach and marine-related shops and leisure facilities. It should be interesting to see if the ‘Public Areas’ are truly public and if the remain so for more than a year or two … I say this because there are many signs indicating that Fishing, Swimming or Jumping was not allowed. I will visit again later in the year, assuming that the weather improves.

In 2017 there will be a new tram service which will have two stops very close to my home. One will be on Lower Domnick Street and the other just in front of the Bus Depot in Broadstone. Of the two the one at Broadstone should be of greatest interest to me as it will only a two or three minute walk [assuming that I can go through Kings Inns].

Connection of the new Granegegorman campus on the new line is very important, and there will be in excess of 20,000 students using the service.

The old railway line that ran through Dublin city included a stop at Broadstone and at Harcourt St. The latter line was preserved over the years after being closed down in the 1950s, which made it available for the RPA to use during the green Luas line construction. A similar scenario will occur with the Broadstone facilities near Constitution Hill.

In the city centre, trams are planned to run on street, but starting from the north west of the inner-city trams will run in a trench and under roads on the disused Broombridge railway alignment.

The plan includes pedestrian access and lifts from Irish Rail’s Broombridge Station to the Luas stop beside it, and vehicle access from Broombridge Road to the stations, including a set down area for buses, taxis and car, as well as bicycle parking.

At Broadstone the relocation of the Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann bus depots was expected to be needed, although it is unclear if this is part of the current plan. At least some destruction of the depot building is planned.

A light railway depot to service and store trams is planned in the area beside Broombridge Station and the Royal Canal.

There is a Marian Statue located in front of the old station building but I have been unable to find out if it will remain at its current location.
