The components are put in, and their leads are bent tightly in the direction they're supposed to go to hold the components tightly against the board.

These are the components I used to make my cheap light box. I was creating a VoiceThread tutorial on making and using a light box, and I needed a shot of all the components

The components are identified in the notes on the photo.

The nice thing about this setup is that you can store everything in the storage box when you're not using it.

My completed VoiceThread tutorial can be viewed here.

It's very quiet at work...

Today, I have rearranged my plastic bag collection, listened to the cleaner's woes ad infinitum, and cleaned these sodding components all day because they had to be despatched this afternoon.

I tried various methods to clean them - even inserting them into the holes of the ultrasonic basket to keep them upright! Nothing worked, and now the buck has been passed to the treatment company instead... However, it did spark an "Ooh - I need to photograph that" kind of a moment. ;-P

We had to find a rare component for a Druid potion....and the only place to find it was near The Wall. And we weren't the only ones there!! There was a rival team trying to steal OUR ingredients!!

The well under Papplewick Pumping Station is approximately 220 feet deep. Wooden rods extended from the end of each engine beam to these components at the bottom of the well which were situated in a vertical cast iron pipe known as a rising main.

The assembly on the right is the foot valve and remains fixed at the bottom of the rising main. It has two rubber flaps one of which can just be seen to the left of the large ring at the right hand end. These open as the pump rods rise allowing water to be 'sucked' into the space above the foot valve.

The other section, shown to the left of the foot valve, is the pump bucket which is fixed to the bottom end of the pump rods being moved up and down by the engine. Again it has rubber flaps which open as the pump rods descend forcing water into the space above the bucket. As the rods rise the weight of water closes the flaps and the column of water is lifted. Eventually it fills the rising main up to surface level where it flows to the force pump which sends it up to the reservoir for distribution.

When the station ceased operation the pump rods and valves were removed and are now on display alongside the road to the reservoir.

Omaha Beach was one of five beach landing sectors designated for the amphibious assault component of Operation Overlord during the Second World War.

On June 6, 1944, the Allies invaded German-occupied France with the Normandy landings."Omaha" refers to an 8-kilometer (5 mi) section of the coast of Normandy, France, facing the English Channel, from east of Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to west of Vierville-sur-Mer on the right bank of the Douve river estuary. Landings here were necessary to link the British landings to the east at Gold with the American landing to the west at Utah, thus providing a continuous lodgement on the Normandy coast of the Baie de Seine (Bay of the Seine river). Taking Omaha was to be the responsibility of United States Army troops, with sea transport, mine sweeping, and a naval bombardment force provided predominantly by the United States Navy and Coast Guard, with contributions from the British, Canadian and Free French navies.

The primary objective at Omaha was to secure a beachhead 8 kilometers (5 miles) deep, between Port-en-Bessin and the Vire river, linking with the British landings at Gold to the east, and reaching the area of Isigny to the west to link up with VII Corps landing at Utah. The untested American 29th Infantry Division, along with nine companies of U.S. Army Rangers redirected from Pointe du Hoc, assaulted the western half of the beach. The battle-hardened 1st Infantry Division was given the eastern half.

Opposing the landings was the German 352nd Infantry Division. Of its 12,020 men, 6,800 were experienced combat troops, detailed to defend a 53-kilometer (33 mi) front. The German strategy was based on defeating any seaborne assault at the water line, and the defenses were mainly deployed in strongpoints along the coast.

The Allied plan called for initial assault waves of tanks, infantry, and combat engineer forces to reduce the coastal defenses, allowing larger ships to land in follow-up waves. But very little went as planned. Difficulties in navigation caused most of the landing craft to miss their targets throughout the day. The defenses were unexpectedly strong, and inflicted substantial casualties on landing U.S. troops. Under intense fire, the engineers struggled to clear the beach obstacles; later landings bunched up around the few channels that were cleared. Weakened by the casualties taken just in landing, the surviving assault troops could not clear the exits off the beach. This caused further problems and consequent delays for later landings. Small penetrations were eventually achieved by groups of survivors making improvised assaults, scaling the bluffs between the most well-defended points. By the end of the day, two small isolated footholds had been won, which were subsequently exploited against weaker defenses further inland, achieving the original D-Day objectives over the following days.
