Diversified livelihoods such as beekeeping can help improve the income of rural communities. Apart from producing honey to sell to market, beekeeping helps promote conservation of the natural environment, which many poor communities depend on for food and energy

UNDPâs Climate Change Adaptation Project (CCAP) is committed to helping vulnerable rural families increase their incomes.

As part of the livelihood component, the project provided four beehives, beekeeping tools and jars for honey, including a 12-day training that gave beneficiaries the necessary skills to maintain their beekeeping business.

Text story:

_________

For Karima, one of the happiest moments of her life was when she earned her first thousand Afghani (US$ 15), when she sold a kilo of honey made from her own bee-keeping business. It may seem like a small amount, but for Karima, it was life changing!

Karima is a housewife and a mother of four. Her husband could barely feed the family from the work he could get, so Karimaâs contribution to the household income was significant.

She has seen a lot in her life. She still remembers the agony and frustration when they had no money and their son was sick. As tears well in her eyes, she relates, âWe were not able to buy him medicine. We couldnât do anything but cry and wait for him to either die or recover by himself.â

Her husband, Khalil, who was very fond of honey, tried his hand at beekeeping before, but because he didnât know how to maintain his beehives, his bees all died.

But, Karima and Khalil did not give up. They decided to seek help from the Directorate of Agriculture in Herat city.

UNDPâs Climate Change Adaptation Project (CCAP) is committed to helping vulnerable rural families increase their incomes.

As part of the livelihood component, the project provided four beehives, beekeeping tools and jars for honey, and, crucially, a 12-day training that gave beneficiaries the necessary skills to maintain their beekeeping business. Karima, who lives in in Qala Safid village in Herat province, was one of the recipients.

âWe learned many things about the bee keeping,â says Karima, âlike feeding times, honey extraction and reproduction of honey bees - things I never knew before.â She adds, âI once used lemon to bring back unconscious bees back to normal.â

Now, equipped with the knowledge and materials, Karima and Khalil expanded their apiary from just four to ten beehives, and they plan to increase the number to 13 in the next year. With the business growing, they are now making 80 to 90 thousand Afghanis each year by selling their honey.

âMy bees are our breadwinners now!â Karima says, looking at her queen bee proudly. âI feel like the queen is representing me and looking after the honey factory!â

Beekeeping requires less inputs for production compared to other agricultural activities and livelihoods. It requires less land, water and labor to generate high levels of income.

With low initial support, beekeepers can get an immediate high income. Thatâs why beekeeping has the potential to transform thousands of lives here in Herat province.

âBy the grace of God, we have a reliable income now and can buy what we need, including medicines or treatment,â says Karima.

Beekeeping in rural areas, where the communities have limited resources such as land and water, can help boost incomes for families like Karimaâs. In addition, beekeeping helps boost food security, and assists crop production through pollination. Almonds, apples, blueberries, cantaloupes, cherries, cranberries, cucumbers, sunflowers, watermelon and many other crops all rely on honey bees for pollination. Diversified livelihoods such as bee increasingly improve the income of rural communities consequently people can adapt and manage climate change risks.

So, thanks to her new beekeeping skills, Karima and Khalil truly have a reason to âbeeâ cheerful!

I wanted to make a test piece for some of the components of my next piece. I have two lengths of steel wire joined together with many short-ish pieces of steel wire with a loop at each end. This test piece has given me lots of ideas for other pieces of jewellery :-)

Soldiers, Sailors and Marines from across Active Duty and Reserve Components on Fort Benning and in the surrounding community converged December 4-7 to compete for the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge. One of a handful of authorized foreign awards, the badge is highly coveted for wear on the US military dress uniform. Qualifying for the badge requires proficiency in physical training, swimming, marksmanship and completion of a 12 mile ruck march. Soldiers and Drill Sergeants from the 98th Training Division (IET) not only competed for the GAFPB, but also lent their administrative, operational and instructional skills to the execution and planning of the event in coordination with the 1-46th Infantry Regiment. Congratulations to those who made the competition a success, and to those who have now earned the right to wear the badge!

"The Fürth town hall is the landmark of the Middle Franconian city. It is located in the center of Fürth on Königstrasse and is the tallest building in the city center.

It was built from 1840 to 1844 according to plans by Georg Friedrich Christian Bürklein, which Eduard Bürklein says he “co-edited”. From 1845 to 1850 another component followed with the tower, which was copied from the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. In 1900/01 the extension was built on Königstrasse (architect: Friedrich von Thiersch), in which the meeting room is now located.

There were structural changes in 1995 when houses at the back were demolished to build the subway and a construction pit opened up over the years. Since its completion at the end of 1998, the Rathaus subway station has been located directly beneath the building. Where the four-lane federal highway 8 used to run in front of the building is now a bus station.

The tower is illuminated with lamps during the Fürth Michaeliskirchweih and on special occasions. Originally, the lighting was only supposed to stay on the tower for a short time, but the people of Fürth liked it so much that they didn't want to do without the lighting, even given the current tight budget situation. On special occasions, e.g. B. the open day, there is the opportunity to visit the tower. The current glockenspiel in Fürth Town Hall has been in the tower since November 1, 2007 and plays Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin every day at 12:04 p.m. The bells were made by the Eijsbouts bell foundry for a company in Bayreuth and, after long-term use, were offered for sale on a car trailer to the former Fürth town center guardian Alexander Mayer. The musical mechanism consists of 25 bells (chromatic from c 3 to c 5).

The SpVgg Greuther Fürth kickers received a special reception in 1997 after promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga and in 2012 to the 1st Bundesliga, when thousands gathered in front of the town hall balcony to cheer on the players.

The Fürth Crime Museum has been located in the basement since 2010 with an exhibition area of 200 m².

Fürth (German: [fʏʁt]; East Franconian: Färdd; Yiddish: פיורדא, romanized: Fiurda) is a city in northern Bavaria, Germany, in the administrative division (Regierungsbezirk) of Middle Franconia.

It is the second-largest city in Franconia and now contiguous with the larger city of Nuremberg, the centres of the two cities being only seven km (4.3 mi) apart.

The city forms a continuous conurbation with the neighbouring cities of Nuremberg, Erlangen and Schwabach, which is the heart of an urban area region with around 1.4 million inhabitants, while the larger Nuremberg Metropolitan Region has a population of approximately 3.6 million.

Fürth celebrated its thousand year anniversary in 2007, its first mention being on 1 November 1007.

The historic centre of the town is to the east and south of the rivers Rednitz and Pegnitz, which join to form the Regnitz to the northwest of the Old Town. To the west of the town, on the far side of the Main-Danube Canal, is the Fürth municipal forest (Fürther Stadtwald). To the east of Fürth, at roughly the same latitude, lies Nuremberg, and to the north is the fertile market-gardening area known as the Knoblauchsland (garlic country), some of which is within the borders of the urban district of Fürth. To the south of the town is an area consisting of wide roads, the canal, and meadows.

Founded as a Franconian settlement in the mid-8th century AD, the first historical mention of Fürth was in a document dated 1 November 1007, in which the Emperor Heinrich II donated his property in Fürth to the newly created Bishopric of Bamberg. The name "Fürth" derives from the German word for "ford", as the first settlements originated around a ford. In the following years, Fürth was granted market privileges, but these were later lost to the neighbouring Nuremberg, under Heinrich III. From 1062 onward, Fürth was again permitted to have a market, but by that time Nuremberg was already the more important town.

In the following centuries, the town was under varying authority, involving the Bishopric of Bamberg, the Principality of Ansbach and the City of Nuremberg. For a long time, the character of the settlement remained largely agricultural, and in 1600 the population was probably still only between 1000 and 2000.

In the Thirty Years War, the village was almost completely destroyed by fire, in military actions leading up to the September 1632 Battle of Fürth.

In 1835, the first German railway was opened between Nuremberg and Fürth.

Throughout the Cold War, Fürth had a significant NATO presence, especially the U.S. Army, due to its proximity to both the East German and Czechoslovak borders.

Franconia (German: Franken, pronounced [ˈfʁaŋkŋ̍]; Franconian: Franggn [ˈfrɑŋɡŋ̍]; Bavarian: Frankn) is a region of Germany, characterised by its culture and Franconian dialect (German: Fränkisch).

Franconia is made up of the three Regierungsbezirke of Lower, Middle and Upper Franconia in Bavaria, the adjacent, Franconian-speaking, South Thuringia, south of the Thuringian Forest—which constitutes the language boundary between Franconian and Thuringian— and the eastern parts of Heilbronn-Franconia in Baden-Württemberg.

Those parts of the Vogtland lying in Saxony (largest city: Plauen) are sometimes regarded as Franconian as well, because the Vogtlandian dialects are mostly East Franconian. The inhabitants of Saxon Vogtland, however, mostly do not consider themselves as Franconian. On the other hand, the inhabitants of the Hessian-speaking parts of Lower Franconia west of the Spessart (largest city: Aschaffenburg) do consider themselves as Franconian, although not speaking the dialect. Heilbronn-Franconia's largest city of Heilbronn and its surrounding areas are South Franconian-speaking, and therefore only sometimes regarded as Franconian. In Hesse, the east of the Fulda District is Franconian-speaking, and parts of the Oden Forest District are sometimes regarded as Franconian for historical reasons, but a Franconian identity did not develop there.

Franconia's largest city and unofficial capital is Nuremberg, which is contiguous with Erlangen and Fürth, with which it forms the Franconian conurbation with around 1.3 million inhabitants. Other important Franconian cities are Würzburg, Bamberg, Bayreuth, Ansbach and Coburg in Bavaria, Suhl and Meiningen in Thuringia, and Schwäbisch Hall in Baden-Württemberg.

The German word Franken—Franconians—also refers to the ethnic group, which is mainly to be found in this region. They are to be distinguished from the Germanic people of the Franks, and historically formed their easternmost settlement area. The origins of Franconia lie in the settlement of the Franks from the 6th century in the area probably populated until then mainly by the Elbe Germanic people in the Main river area, known from the 9th century as East Francia (Francia Orientalis). In the Middle Ages the region formed much of the eastern part of the Duchy of Franconia and, from 1500, the Franconian Circle. The restructuring of the south German states by Napoleon, after the demise of the Holy Roman Empire, saw most of Franconia awarded to Bavaria." - info from Wikipedia.

One of the most exciting components of A+ Partners in Education, Battle of the Books gets fifth grade students excited about reading. A lively academic competition, Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship. The 2015 competition runs concurrently at Howard, Mt. Hebron, Oakland Mills, River Hill and Wilde Lake high schools.

Teams of five students and one adult coach each read the same 16 pre-assigned books over four months. Selected by HCLS instructors and HCPSS media specialists, titles include a wide range of reading levels and subjects. Thanks to generous sponsors, all teams receive a set of books. In addition to reading the books, teams choose a team name then dress accordingly.

During the "battle" (a 50-question exam), a moderator asks questions that relate to one of the following: a direct quote from one of the book characters; a statement about something that happens in the book; a passage taken directly from the book; details about an illustration or picture. Winning teams receive prizes.
