Chalkley, the battalion commanding officer for Combat Logistics Battalion 4, and Brown Jr., the battalion sergeant major, oversaw the birthday ceremony that concluded with a steak dinner at the expeditionary chow hall and a night off for the Marines to celebrate the birthday. The Okinawa-based Marines travelled to Twentynine Palms for Enhanced Mojave Viper, the battalion’s final training evolution before deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom early next year. For a Buddy. This group of entrapped marines struggle down a road carrying a helpless litter patient to a cleared strip for air evacuation by planes of the U.S. Far East Combat Cargo Command. Highest number of patients to be evacuated from the strip in 1 day was 5 December 1950 when 1,580 casualties were flown from the battle zone to a rear area air base near Hungnam.
