The thing I love about this photo is the absolutely menacing Potato Cod in the top left of the frame.

The Gato-class boats all had air conditioning, refrigerated storage for food, fresh water distilling units, clothes washers, and bunks for nearly every crew member; luxuries virtually unheard of in other navies. The Bureau designers felt that if a crew of 60–80 men were to be expected to conduct 75-day patrols in the warm waters of the Pacific, these types of features were vital to the health and efficiency of the crew.

When I was a small child, my parents rented a summer cottage on Cape Cod Bay. I awoke the first morning at dawn, excited about a day at the beach. As I peered out the window that faced the bay, I was astonished and crushed to find that the glittering sea from the evening before was now all sand, as far as my eye could see. Based on my limited experience with contained water, all I could think was that a very powerful someone had pulled the plug and let it all drain away. It was a tragic thought back then, but sometimes I wish I could recapture that simple naive way of experiencing life.
Last week, I was drawn to our local fishing pier by the knowledge that the moon would be setting toward the pier, shortly after sunrise and at low tide. So there I was, in the half-dark on a finger-numbing February morning, no sound save the soft Gulf breeze, gingerly stepping through the wet marsh to find a pleasing composition. For just a moment, I was visited with child-like simplicity and wondered. Is the tide following the moon over the western horizon or is it the other way around, the moon being dragged by the receding tide? Or are they locked in a celestial dance with neither leading, both just drifting away to the west?

Three light setup.
Overhead ABR800 ringflash with the 30" moon unit, angled down about 45 degrees and fairly close.
For rim I used twin beauty dishes, with 20 degree grids.
I eventually want to replace the ABR800 in this setup with a PLM and front diffuser panel, but for now, the moon unit acts as a somewhat effective softbox/octobox but pulls double duty in its primary purpose, the best ringflash ever...and one I'll never sell or trade.

I will sometimes check to see what the Trade Fair supermarket has in prepared lunch dishes. Sometimes, I'm too late to get anything. This time there was only one plate, this one, and it was labeled "Hot Plate Large" with no clue as to what it was. I decided to take my chances.
It turned out to be a cod fish stew. The yellow rice was loaded with corn and had a delicious corn flavor. It was the best! This was a lot of food for $4.99.
