Apparently, salted cod (which is then re-hydrated, of course) is a staple of Portuguese cuisine. I'm not sure why I didn't expect it, but it was very salty. Luckily, the chickpeas, onions, parsley, and potatoes all worked together to offset it somewhat.
Also, restaurants are very generous with the sheer quantity of free appetizers they serve at the beginning of the meal! ...or so I thought! Some restaurants (not all, but many touristy ones) will bring out plates of food that can easily masquerade as freebies: cheese, sardine spread (in plastic packets, ala strawberry jam), and, yeah, even bread. But if you don't send them back, you'll get charged for each and every one of them. So unless you really want to try to packaged sardine spread (which was pretty good!) don't let them even put it on your table. Say "no thanks" and send it back!
