Some small patches of red in the sky this morning, and if the old rhyme is to be believed it's a warning for shepherds (or sailors). I didn't see either in London during the day, but there was certainly a fair bit of rain during the day. Tomorrow Storm Éowyn is set to hit the British Isles with yellow, amber and even red weather warnings issued by the Met Office.

A southbound London Overground class 378 unit comes out of a tunnel into an essentially white scene at Wapping station on the East London Line.

As well as the white wall on the right, there is a fair sprinkling of white grit salt on the narrow platform. This is applied because although the stretch of the line between Surrey Quays and Whitechapel is below ground (and of course the River Thames), a small part of the northen end of the platform is exposed to the weather. This shot was taken on the last day of a week long cold snap across the British Isles.

Although the planned withdrawal of the 'Castle Class 255' 4+2 HSTs on timetabled services was to be by the end of 2023, this was subsequently revised, enabling a small number of sets to continue in use on GWR diagrams into 2024. On 22nd September 2023 just one class 1 diagram remained, the 1G77 15:50 Penzance to Bristol Temple Meads, with 43155 'Rougement Castle' (with 43153 'Chûn Castle powering on the rear) rolls into Taunton shortly after sunset. 43155 (with 43154) was acquired by West Coast Railway Company and moved to Carnforth on 31st July 2025.
