The 3 kV DC Class 6E1, Series 4 electric locomotive was designed and built for the South African Railways (SAR) by Union Carriage and Wagon (UCW) in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC).

One hundred locomotives were delivered in 1973 and 1974.

The Class 6E1 family saw service all over both 3 kV DC mainline and branchline networks, the smaller Cape Western network between Cape Town and Beaufort West, and the larger network which covers portions of the Northern Cape, the Free State, Natal, Gauteng, North West Province and Mpumalanga.

Beginning in 2000, Spoornet (new owners of South African Railways) began a project to rebuild Series 2 to 11 Class 6E1 locomotives to Class 18E, Series 1 and Series 2 at the Transnet Rail Engineering (TRE) workshops at Koedoespoort. In the process, the cab at the no. 1 end was stripped of all controls and the driver's front and side windows were blanked off to have a toilet installed, thereby forfeiting the locomotive's bi-directional ability.

Since the driving cab's noise level had to be below 85 decibels, cab 2 was selected as the Class 18E driving cab, primarily based on its lower noise level compared to cab 1, which is closer and more exposed to the compressor's noise and vibration. Another factor was the closer proximity of cab 2 to the low voltage switch panel. The fact that the handbrake was located in cab 2, was not a deciding factor, but was considered an additional benefit.

BR Class 117 Pressed Steel DMU WR set no. B450, Westbury, 9 September 1986. The Railcar Association Website (http://www.railcar.co.uk/his100-109/101ops2.htm) suggests that the centre car of this three-car unit (59539) would have been a Class 101 (Metropolitan-Cammell) TC(L). The set (possibly without 59539) was transferred to Tyseley (Birmingham) in 1987, becoming T315. The car numbering in 1986 would have been: W51352 / 59539 / 51394.

For some reason the dark grey never seemed to last long on the front of both class 86's & 87's when painted in InterCity livery giving them a very tatty look very quickly!

SNCB/NMBS La Brugeoise et Nivelles (BN) Class 20, 3,000v dc, 6,850 hp Co-Co No.2005 in standard blue & yellow stripe livery at Brussels Midi, 6/11. The 25 Class 20's were built in 1975 and were the world's first locos to be fitted with thyristor chopper control. Although very powerful, this sophisticated design proved very troublesome and the locos are now largely relegated to freight on the Antwerp - Montzen line instead of international expresses on the Ostend - Brussels - Luxembourg route, so it was unsusual to see 2005 on an international express as pictured.

Watercolor - Day 2 Masking Fluid

Supplies used:

Winsor & Newton Colourless Art Masking Fluid

Spiced Marmalade, Crushed Olive, Peacock Feathers, and Salty Ocean Distress inks – Ranger

“Thinking of you” – Hero Arts Rubber Stamps

Flower rubber stamp – Just for Fun Rubber Stamps

Strathmore Watercolor paper (cold press 140 lb.)

Onyx Black Versafine inkpad

Using the Onyx Black Versafine ink, I stamped the flower onto the watercolor paper. After letting it dry, I applied the masking fluid with a paintbrush over the entire flower.

Since I don’t have any watercolors, I made them by smooching the 4 Distress Ink pads onto a different section of my non-stick craft sheet and then spraying each color with water. The masking fluid had pretty much dried by the time I finished making up the watercolors, so I applied the colors starting with Spiced Marmalade, Crushed Olive, Peacock Feathers, and finally Chipped Sapphire. (This color combination is my new favorite.) After letting the watercolors dry a little bit, I wiped any wetness off of the masking fluid and then rubbed the masking fluid off. It came off really easily. Just be sure your fingers are clean when rubbing or you may leave smudges on the white areas.
