High Key Photography

My finished quilt for the Madrona Road challenge. It is 36.5 x 52 inches.

I am a member of the Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild.

One of the biggest challenges of shooting film is that there are too many things that could go wrong during the shooting process. On the other hand, it actually makes you become more discipline before hitting the shutter. When you have a scene like this, you only have a small time window to capture it before the light and colors start to fade away. I have decided to go back to film because I didn't take photography seriously in the past. Only until I picked up my first DSLR in the late 2005, had I become more serious. The chemicals and the emulsion involved are fascinating to me. But I understand the underlying challenges and I am willing to accept them for my new journey.

Challenge #168: Complementary Colors: Red & Green

After a long hiatus, I decided to try my hand at the VAA’s weekly photohunt challenges again. This week’s theme was “Take a Hike” and location was Frisland.

maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Laluna%20Island/122/184/23

When the hour was up, we went back to the VAA gallery to upload and vote, but of course, there were server problems and we couldn’t upload.

Just my luck, but I’m glad I went, it really helped knock the dust off and get me into taking pictures again. You can’t go wrong when someone gives you a location and theme.

Who knows, maybe I’ll get a chance to try again next Wednesday.

Exerpts From Shawnah's Blog:

....."I have always been an advocate of preserving one's culture, and having great respect for other cultures as well. One of my fondest places to visit, and getting giddy whenever I have assignments there and extra time to have a vacation is Bangkok. Recently though for the past months my favorite cultural city is in great danger. Heavy rains bombarded Thailand with so much rain, it flooded an area the size of Denmark, and now the waters are slowly flooding Bangkok. As I read the new invitation of THE Wilhelmina to be at the MAMAC for some crazy fashion and some of them modern art, I had a light bulb moment. I took the chance to coordinate with the art people there and went out of my way, to ba an exhibit myself... To raise awareness of the floods in Bangkok and even though the thais, as a race arent really cry babies and are not yelling at the world for their remorseful situation, I know they need our help, URGENTLY. I became the scale of balance, the scale that tips off whenver man becomes irresponsible with his deeds. Global warming making freak weather seems normal, floods all over the world that enundates both the human spirit and the intangible culture the citizens posses... but then, there is the other part of the scale, HOPE. Hope that one day when the waters recede and once again the streets of Bangkok become walkable again, people should revisit it once again like they used to before, stimulate confidence among locals that here is their beloved city rising up once again from the flood... a chance to recultivate culture, hear the bustling noise of the city, hear the cheerful and amiable way thai speak their language, and most of all, a chance to rebuild their spirits and set them high both as thai people and a nation..."

Taken for Saturday Self Challenge 21/12/2019 - Christmas Time or Winter .

Seeing as the challenge day coincides with the Solstice , I am sticking with this as my subject . However , the time of the Winter Solstice in U.S.A. Eastern Time where the subject was set is at 23:19 on 21/12/2019 - but here in the U.K. the Solstice takes place at 04:19 on Sunday 22/12/2019 .

What you see here is a metal engraving of Stonehenge which we have had for many a year - I could not fit into the week a drive to Stonehenge itself which takes one hour and forty something minutes to get there on a good run !

I did try adding a sun shining through the stones but it just did not look right , so in the first comment box is a shot I took earlier - many years earlier !!

Winter Solstice and Stonehenge

The stones of Stonehenge have silently marked the winter solstice for thousands of years.

The Winter Solstice

The earth rotates on a tilted axis. When this axis leans towards the sun, it’s summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in the south. This is reversed as the earth continues on its orbit until the axis becomes tilted away from the sun.

During the winter solstice, the earth’s axis is tilted at its furthest point from the sun. This means that, for us in the northern hemisphere, the sun is at its lowest point in the sky. It’s also the shortest day of the year - and the longest night.

Studying the passage of time was important to many ancient cultures. For the people of Stonehenge sunlight must have been crucial - it allowed them to see, it kept them warm, it helped their crops to grow. Winter might have been a time of fear as days grew shorter and colder. People must have longed for the return of light and warmth. It is believed that this yearly cycle is what inspired Neolithic people to construct Stonehenge - a monument aligned to the movements of the sun.

The stones were shaped and set up to frame at least two important events in the annual solar cycle – the midwinter sunset at the winter solstice and the midsummer sunrise at the summer solstice.

At the summer solstice, around 21 June, the sun rises behind the Heel Stone and its first rays shine into the heart of Stonehenge. Although the tallest trilithon at the monument is no longer standing, the sun would have set between the narrow gap of these uprights during the winter solstice.

The winter solstice may have been more important than the summer solstice for the people who built and used Stonehenge. Excavations at Durrington Walls suggest that people held huge feasts around this time of year.

Durrington Walls is a Neolithic settlement situated about two miles away from the monument. Archaeologists think that the people who built and used Stonehenge lived here. Recent excavations revealed huge amounts of discarded pig and cattle bones.

Well after all that a song for sight and sound which has many images related to Solstice Celebrations --

OK I was searching for a pirate challenge and I came across the Delphis Castle.

I have limited knowledge of European architecture and so I may not know what I'm talking about but here goes... Delphis Castle seems to be a Rococo styled palace built on the much older foundations of a 13 century stronghold... As you explore you will find a definate difference between the two styles. This is an absolutely beautiful place and is fun to explore... I don't remember if you get a note card about it's history or not... sorry.

OK in order to get credit for this challenge.... DO NOT CAM AND JUMP to the final places in the castle.... take your time and enjoy the build. I've made notes on the spots I would like you each to look for.... take picture of three and post them on flickr and to the Pirate Challenges Group: www.flickr.com/groups/1480805@N22

Sorbon Beach (50, 60, 51) (slurl.com/secondlife/Sorbon%20Beach/50/60/51)

Here are the five possibilities for photo ops.... Use AT LEAST three (3) :) - Move your curser over the picture!!!

A picture of yourself seated below the picture of Luciano Povarotti.

A picture of yourself with one of the knight statues.

A picture of yourself kneeled at the tomb in the temple.

A picture of yourself seated in the king's chair.

A picture of yourself floating in the pool.

There is no time limit so take your time going there and posting pictures. Oh for extra credit.... do any of you know why I think the older part of the castle (stone walls) once belonged to the Templar Knights? Flickrmail me the answer to the extra credit question...
