Cascades Climate Challenge is a youth program designated to teaching students about climate change, learning outdoor skills and personal leadership.

I spent four nights out of the three week course with a CCC group. We learned about organic farming, where our food comes from and helped pull weeds and harvest pees at Blue Heron Organic Farm. We searched for amphibians near Baker Lake and with much success found many. The students also had an amazing opportunity to snow shoe up Mt. Baker so see and learn about Easton Glacier and climate change.

The younger black bull kept challenging the Hereford. They tustled of and on for about 10 minutes. Eventually the Hereford seem to say, "this is a nuisance and annoying and there is all this green grass and frankly, you're bugging me". He walked across the road to graze some more. Black bull followed him and kept bellowing and lowering his head, only to be ignored. Finally he went off the smell the rear end of a cow and then he was happy again.

– The 12 by 12 Team

The final event to the Steele Challenge, Aug. 9-10, for the Class of 2016 was the inauspicious sounding problem-solving site. New cadets encountered a scenario where their squad leader was rendered unconscious in an attack and they were left to navigate their own way to the finish line. It would require teamwork and ingenuity to race the clock and by devising a plan to get across Lake Popolopen in a Zodiac raft with all their equipment and no paddles. Most squads chose to swim the raft across which proved slower than those who decided to hand paddle, though the swim was decidedly a cooler choice after a long day of activity. Once across, the new cadets had to figure out the best way to get the raft, the equipment and their squad leader down the road, several hundred feet, to the finish line. The raft itself weighed over 300-pounds, and adding additional burden to it had many squads struggling under the weight. However, racing each component separately proved to be the best option, of course, with several variances applicable. Squad leaders had one or two new cadets providing the escort to the end, but lane evaluators said height differentials and weight distribution made two-man carries harder than having just one cadet carry the squad leader. The Challenge:

Your final challenge will be what this competition is all about...Avant Garde(AG) and who better to inspire you to the heights of Avant Garde, but the embodiment of AG herself...Lady Gaga. This superstar is Avant Garde to the max with a little splash of fantasy to keep everyone on their toes and speaking of toes don't forget those Gaga shoes. Wherever she goes Lady G goes there in Avant Garde style. Heck I'd like to bet that she wears AG to take out her garbage!!! With that in mind your final challenge is to design an outfit that would suit Lady G to a T.

Of all the challenges this was probably the hardest one to conceive since we are supposed to create a look for THE Lady Gaga. In the vastness of the possible looks, I remembered that The Lady herself will be coming to my country to have a big concert next month, so I imagined myself designing for her opening number here and what more could express my country's national identity than the Terno, a butterfly sleeved formal dress, and the Kalesa, a horse carriage that is decorated with colorful flaglettes and other blings. For this challenge I started out with a clean color palette, beige, cream and white to offset the otherwise flamboyant shape of the outfit. The sleeves are reminiscent of the Terno. The whole outfit is made of Jusi, an indigenous fabric and velvet panels. as for the embellishment, I opted for texture not shine so I used squared shells to use as breaker from the semi sheer fabric. Saran hair fringes finishes the look, I also made the Hoof shoes with tail, and the horse headpiece/wig to make the look more cohesive and utterly show stopping ready.

Children across Greater Manchester have watched a compelling play warning them about criminal exploitation from county lines organised crime groups.

Greater Manchester’s Programme Challenger – a joint partnership to tackle serious and organised crime together – funded Rochdale-based theatre company Breaking Barriers to deliver the series ‘Crossing the Line’ to children in year six at 50 primary schools.

Over a month the play was rolled out to schools in Bury, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford for children to learn how to spot the signs of exploitation to prevent and protect them from criminal gangs seeking to recruit them as drug mules.

The production explores grooming through a monologue from an 18-year-old man and his younger brother aged 15. He talks about the criminal gang members trying to give him gifts in return for running their drug errands.

‘Crossing the Line’ also incorporated discussions with the children to teach them about healthy choices and relationships, learning to say no, how to handle pressure from older people as well as educate children on where to go for help and advice if they have concerns.

One of the pupils who watched the play said: “The play has helped me see how criminal gangs can manipulate you by trying to make you feel special and part of their family, then force you to do things for them.

“It has taught me to never join a gang as it could harm your future and instead to stay in school, get a good education and job.

“If someone finds themselves in this situation, they should speak to anyone they can trust, such as their mum or dad, a teacher, the police or even Childline.”

A county line is the advertisement of class A drugs via a mobile phone, known as a ‘graft line’, the drugs are then moved by dealers from one area to another as well as to other places across the country.

The organised crime groups will often exploit children to transport the drugs and money profited from its supply.

Detective Chief Inspector Claire McGuire, from Programme Challenger’s Organised Crime Coordination Unit, said: “Young and vulnerable children are sadly targeted and groomed by county lines criminal networks to be recruited to travel across the country to deliver drugs and money.

“They can find themselves in situations that often seem impossible to get out of which can have a detrimental impact on their life and their future.

It’s therefore imperative we intervene as soon as possible, inform children early on to prevent this from happening and protect them from the harm caused by organised criminality.

“Breaking Barriers work is a creative way to grab a child’s attention, it educates and engages with them on the signs to look out for and where to turn to for help and advice. The feedback we have had from them, and the teachers has been brilliant.”

Deputy Mayor for Policing, Crime, Criminal Justice and Fire, Bev Hughes, said: “We must educate children early on the signs of criminal exploitation and this work is vital in doing that.

It’s great to see such a creative play being used to deliver an important message and schools have been a wonderful support with this.

Lots of young people across Greater Manchester are now more aware of the signs of criminal exploitation and know help and support is available to them.”

Parvez Qadir, Director of Breaking Barriers, said: “Crossing the Line tackles difficult themes around grooming and exploitation used by criminal gangs to control young people to travel their drugs for them. Using the power of creativity,

I wrote the piece to tour in schools to educate, inform and offer safe pathways for young people out of child criminal exploitation.

“The facilitated workshop is a safe place for difficult questions for young people, teachers and parents to discuss those

themes.

I hope “Crossing the Line” can educate young people to make safe and healthier choices.”

This week, from Monday-Friday, I am participating in the Live Below The Line challenge, attempting to feed myself for 5 days for £5. (This corresponds to the World Bank's definition of the global poverty line, though obviously if actually living on that line one would be paying for everything with that money, not just food).

It seems tough, but possible - this is my shopping for the 5 days. Total cost £4.86. I am only one meal in so far... I shall update you on how it goes.

(p.s. if you want to sponsor me, please do. This is mostly an awareness-raising exercise, but I'd love to raise some money for Unicef at the same time.)

Challenge will be moving from Sky Channel 125 to Sky Channel 145 as it makes way for the new channel TLC.

The New York State Department of Health is pleased to announce the five finalists for the Aging Innovation Challenge, a crowdsource competition developed in partnership with HeroX to generate innovative solutions to assist older adults and their caregivers in carrying out activities of daily living.

The Challenge was open to all undergraduate and graduate students attending a college or university in New York State. The finalists were narrowed down from a field of 24 semi-finalists, which were originally selected from 35 submissions.

Just for fun I decided to go back to December 2010 and start doing all the Diva Challenges. Here are the first two. On the left is Challenge #1 - Simplicity...which to me means simple string and monotangle. The tangle I did was Nightsbridge with several variations. On the right is Challenge #2 - 2pencil string. I had never tried that before at all. The tangles I used were BTL Joos, Barberpole, Ragz, Onamato, Spokes, and Zigzag border. I thought it looked incomplete, so I sponged on shades of green and brown ink and now I like it.

A card I made for the Summer Card Camp first week Challenge. I forgot my camera at my daughter's so I had to scan, that's why the glitter looks funny....

I used the flowers from the Basic Grey set Sweet Threads (CG309).

I used the colours from the first week Challenge for the Summer Card camp 2011 with Jennifer McGuire and Kirstina Werner.

I used Nick Bantock Rose Madder ink and Color Box chalk Wisteria.

The cardstock are from a DCWV pad.

The "Hello" is from set "Happy Day Animals" from Hero Arts (CL153).

The little tag was punched with a Fiskar punch. And the ribbon is Stampin'Up Pumpkin Pie.I also used a gem from Hero Arts Hero Hues Dots.

Thanks for looking!
