Compositionally Challenged week 30 is Landscape with Foreground Interest. For this shot, I had the camera on the edge of a boat dock, less than a foot above water. From this low POV, the choppy water is the foreground interest.

Starting an event at what is typically the hottest time of a summer day, 3 p.m., may have impacted participation Aug. 31 in the inaugural Area I Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers’ Spirit Challenge.

However, it certainly didn’t affect the enthusiasm shown by the 21 male and 2 female competitors or the spectators who made their way to Stewart Field on Camp Casey during the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Labor Day Festival.

At first glance the course appeared to be fairly tame.

“The course looked easy,” said Staff Sgt. Jason Knight, FMWR entertainment and events coordinator. “But factor in the single elimination and the rounds a competitor must make, then it becomes challenging.”

The obstacles and course covered the ballpark infield and used 50 yards of the adjacent access road as the start/finish track area for the event.

Taking the top spots were Sgt. Joe "Barefoot" Kaenel of B Battery, 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment and family member Kendra Cox.

“I had a great time competing,” said Cox. “Everyone was having a good time making it a fun atmosphere to be in. Area I BOSS has really grown in the last few years, now offering so many activities for the Soldiers and even family members.”

Cox and her husband Cpt. Timothy Cox are accustomed to hauling away Area I Sports’ hardware. And, this event certainly can lay claim to having one of the grandest trophies in the region.

“The traveling trophy will promote healthy competition,” said Knight. “Competitors can take pride in their personal achievement but it allows them to share the honor with their unit building esprit de corps .”

The trophy will be up for grabs once again at Camp Stanley’s Fall Fest Oct. 19 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

During the Steele Challenge, Aug. 9-10 at Camp Buckner, the Tactical Casualty Combat Care and radio communication site demonstrated thenew cadets' ability to repel an ambush while providing medical assistance and exfilatration of casualities. For the new cadets in 4th Squad, 1st Platoon, Company B, this was a test of the basic premise of soldiering, never leave a fallen comrade behind, and required them to call in a medical evacuation report after moving the treated casualties to a rally point. At the Soldier First Responder/Communications lane of the Neel Challenge on Aug. 4, new cadets from 2nd Squad, 2nd Platoon, Company B are tested in a scenario where a presence patrol is attacked and sustained casualties. The new cadets must move tactically into position to perform medical aid on the wounded (head and leg wounds) while establishing a perimeter to fend off further attacks. An ASIP radio must be assembled and a frequency loaded to communicate a report. The Neel Challenge is the culminating military skills test for the Class of 2015, named in honor of 1st Lt. Phillip Neel, a Class of 2005 graduate who was killed April 2007 while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. The daylong event evaluates the new cadets on everything they’ve learned through Cadet Basic Training, from marksmanship and land navigation to Soldier First Responder and communications skills. Challenger 2 during public presentation

The Space Shuttle Challenger's remains were buried in an old Minuteman silo at Launch Complex 31. The concrete cover required the two largest cranes in Florida to lift it into place. No plaques are present, and no ceremony was performed. The mission photos for Challenger and Columbia are missing in the shuttle crew quarters at the Operations and Checkout Building.

It is that time of year when the sheep start their courting. It seems to start with a bit of head butting, followed by a bit of chasing and attempted mating. None of these attempts seemed successful. I imagine it is a bit cold for that sort of thing! These are the Hebridean Sheep that share a field with the llamas, immediately behind our garden.

I often go up there to have a look and check that they are all OK.
