I did not know this is the way they clean bread ovens.

On Nov. 8, 2006, Mark Bittman wrote in the New York Times of a breadmaking method taught by Jim Lahey at New York's Sullivan Street Bakery. By using minimal yeast and a long, long rise, it eliminates the need to knead and produces a perfect boule with remarkably little effort.

The article was on the "most e-mailed" list for weeks, and amateurs in kitchens everywhere raced to try it. I finally did (my first non-bread-machine bread!), and the results were as fantastic as advertised. I'm making another loaf to take to the in-laws' for Thanksgiving.

Steak & Timothy Taylor Landlord Ale Pie with Timothy Taylor Landlord.

Having missed my chance to try a

steak and kidney pie from Ginger Pig (again, the day before, but this time due to it's need to be heated up - although the pork pie was scrumptious!) I was immediately attracted to its mention on the menu. Something about ale in meat pies always stimulates my salivary glands, however the fact that the meal came "with Timothy Taylor Landlord" creeped me out a little (even if it was meant to be cute). Does that mean that Timothy Taylor Landlord would come to the table or that Timothy Taylor Landlord bits were *in* the pie?? Either way, there was enough starch and carbs on this plate to counter-balance the protein rich meal earlier. I was impressed with the hollowed out bread/pastry shell of the pie (not sure if the picture really does this behemoth justice as it was quite large!! I mean, *I* couldn't finish it (but then again, I had at least 1/3 of the fish & chips... eh, I did mention I "sampled" a lot of it, n'est pas?).

Thought I'd experiment with adding Alpen to bread. Used an olive oil rich dough as i'd not worked with particularly wet dough before, and i like rich bread for breakfast.

Overall the taste and texture was not dissimilar to crumpets, and hitting raisins now and again was great, but it needed more alpen overall
