Homemade bread, just out of the oven and cooling. Looking good! Smelling better!!

Bread crust on homemade bread. Focus stacked using zerene

The brown bread never grew mould. The white bread from the bakery grew mould really well.

Crispy crust, chewy insides. I think I could fool people into thinking I bought this at the Co-op.

I had New England Clam Chowder in a Sour Dough bread bowl, with a piece of French Bread. I love Panera's.

Do other markets have these little diagrams to show you where to place the bread? I've never noticed before, but I think these are pretty old.

The local, just-down-the-street supermarket that I've shopped at for all of my 28 years is going out of business at the end of the year, after switching hands 3 times in a matter of months. Probably a victim of the new Super Wal*Mart. :(

It's a sad thing. So I went this morning (40% off everything!!!) and said goodbye to some of the long time employees and took some pictures, since rumour has it the place is going to be a warehouse. :-|

When I was a baby, I believe it was a Foodland. Then there was a big fire, and it became vacant for a time. It reopened as Apple's, and remained so for most of my childhood. As a teenager, it became Bilo. Recently, Bilo became Shop N' Save, but then Shop N' Save became Foodland again. I think it was always under the "Friedman's" name, since they celebrated their 100th anniversary a while ago.

Very sad. 40 something vintage grocery store pics are on the way.

Mostly I'm ticked I can't walk to the grocery store any more. Yuck.

...from the previous class (intro to foods). I took some plain rolls that were slightly sweetened. Yum.

based off of this recipe: steamykitchen.com/168-no-knead-bread-revisited.html

add 3 cups all purpose flour, .25 tsp instant yeast, and 3/4 Tbsp kosher salt to a big bowl. add 1.5 cups warm water and stir. cover with plastic wrap and leave in a warm place for 12-20 hours. dump out on a well-floured surface, and tuck up into a taut boule. wrap in a well-floured cloth napkin and let sit for 2 hours. Half an hour before it finishes, put a covered le creuset in the oven and preheat to 450. After half an hour, transfer the dough to the pot, cover, and put back in the hot oven for a half hour. Then uncover, and put back in the oven for another 20-30 minutes. It's done when it sounds hollow when tapped.

---------------

I did a lot of things wrong this time through -- got dry active yeast, used too-cool water for the yeast, used way less salt than I was supposed to, didn't flour the cutting board enough... nevertheless, everything turned out pretty damn well! it's a little blandish, but since I used it to soak up a bunch of bacon grease, I hardly noticed.

I have to admit, this is a pretty remarkably easy and satisfying bread recipe.

Dessert bread made from challah dough with chocolate chips and diced prunes mixed throughout.

This loaf of bread came out so perfectly I just had to photograph it. It even slices perfectly. And it's delicious! :)
