Are there any alternatives to an increasingly centralized internet landscape as cultivated by Google and Facebook? It is hard to imagine, but there are. The resources for such alternatives lie dormant in Japan’s diversity itself: tinker garages, corporate hotbeds, grassroots hubs, institutional labs, hacker bedrooms, editorial outposts etc. In those digital backyards innovators have been silently pursuing their work. Now they come together from all over Europe & Japan to explore synergies and common interests.

The conference is partitioned into a semi-open „Networking Lounge“ and „Public Talks“ that are accessible to a broad audience.

Sarah & Josh: With the only skoolie on the lot, Sarah and Josh moved from North Carolina, originally looking in the Bay Area, but discouraged by $1400-per-month parking fees they moved in here where things are “slower” and they like that.

Eden using a clear easel in the backyard of Little Mish. Such paintings are non-permanent so I thought I'd immortalize it.

My backyard friends came to visit me last month! Living on a bluff brings me a variety of wildlife throughout the year. As you can tell, the changing of the leaves had just started, still have a ways to go before more beautiful colors are seen, if the rain doesn’t damage them first! Jičín (German: Titschein, Gitschin or Jitschin; Latin: Gitmiacinum, Gitzinum; Polish: Jiczyn) is a town in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. It lies approximately 85 km northeast of Prague in the scenic region of the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) under the Prachov Rocks (Prachovské skály).

Jičín has been declared a Municipal Reserve (městská památková rezervace) because of its well-preserved historical center, built around a rectangular square with a regular Gothic street layout, remnants of fortifications and arcade Renaissance and Baroque houses. The town is also connected with the popular fairy-tale character of Rumcajs.

The Battle of Gitschin was fought nearby during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866.

Have never been in Jičín before the trip to Prachovské skály area in summer; the town is charming, quiet on Saturday evening, and there is a surprisingly good Indian restaurant quite close to the town square and entrance tower...

Our tenant put up an outside tree that his cats couldn't eat, and the renovation in the house behind ours is nearly done. Looking very pleasant out the back windows! I took this with the L16, and the last photo of the same scene (one back) was taken with an iPhone SE.

I loooove the way this looks at sunset.

Last winter, Erick built the kids a luge down the back of our deck.

I never thought we'd see owls in our tiny backyard but these guys came to visit around one o'clock yesterday afternoon. What they were doing out in the daytime, I don't know. We think they are screech owls and should be nocturnal. They came back again around dusk.

After receiving a small Webber grill for father's day, we put it to good use. We loaded up on fresh fruit, kebobs and plenty of texas backyard wind & sunshine!

Our Daily Challenge

In Your Own Backyard ~ Literal view, my backyard is three feet. The bamboo forest rises to above the second level of our home. That's the kitchen window view seen in many of my Daily Challenges. The black line encircles the bamboo to keep its roots contained. It goes down three feet. :)

Our backyard was very hilly and it was impossible to do pretty much anything back there. So a friend of Lee's came over to level the yard.

In two weeks I'll be in Black Rock City for Burning Man 2006. It will be my second year at Burning Man and my friend Rob's fourth year.

Last year the only relief we had in our camp from the brutal desert sun was the shade cast by our rented minivan, which usually didn't amount to much.

This year we're taking along a lightweight, prefab shade structure. It's 12x12 feet, and hopefully it will provide enough shade for us to catch a break from the midday sun once in awhile.

The Kelty Shadehouse 12 is like a tent with no walls, and I pitched it in the back yard to get a feel for the setup. It went up fairly easily, although I got stuck for awhile because I failed to follow the included directions.
