WHAT ARE ALTERNATIVES TO GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK?
Digital Backyards Japan | International Conference
January 10th-12th at PORTO | Sapporo/JAPAN

Are there any alternatives to an increasingly centralized internet landscape as cultivated by Google and Facebook? It is hard to imagine, but there are. The resources for such alternatives lie dormant in Japan’s diversity itself: tinker garages, corporate hotbeds, grassroots hubs, institutional labs, hacker bedrooms, editorial outposts etc. In those digital backyards innovators have been silently pursuing their work. Now they come together from all over Europe & Japan to explore synergies and common interests.
The conference is partitioned into a semi-open „Networking Lounge“ and „Public Talks“ that are accessible to a broad audience.

Backyard garden insect taken under cloudy/lowlight conditions. 50-250mm Z DX kit lens [1/1000s, f/6.3, ISO4000, 250mm, reduced noise and upped exposure a bit in Lightroom]. The two Z DX kit lenses perform very well considering their price range and the fact that they are zoom variable focal lengths and variable low apertures. Good test of the Z50 auto focus under lowlight and clutter of subjects.
After receiving a small Webber grill for father's day, we put it to good use. We loaded up on fresh fruit, kebobs and plenty of texas backyard wind & sunshine!

Another shot in the backyard on a late winter afternoon. Appears there might be some exotic animal life out here, but for the most part they are the tracks of our two Shih Tzus.

Last summer, this big muley came down from the bush to reside in the neighborhood, pruning the trees and eating cherries off the lawns! He made himself scarce come autumn though. I wonder why? ; )
I decided to try some macro images and found my subjects around the flowerbeds in the backyard. I have recently bought a photo light tent and wanted to try it out.

Being frustrared for the rain keeping me away from the refuge, I took my camera and beanbag out to my covered patio and sat there waiting to see something move. To my absolute surprise I saw this Coopers Hawk land on this wire in my neighbors yard after an unsuccessful chase. This is the first decent shot I have ever had of this bird and I have never seen any hawk from my backyard before. Taken at Portland, OR.
I did this plein air painting on my back porch. I wanted to test some new equipment before taking it out on location. I bought a tripod adapter to hold my iPad, a Nomad brush, and an Epson PictureMate Charm portable printer for printing reference photos. You can read about my setup and findings on my blog over at:

iPad, ArtRage and Snapseed apps, Nomad brush. Total time about 30 minutes.
