If I envy anyone it must be
My grandmother in a long ago
Green summer, who hurried
Between kitchen and orchard on small
Uneducated feet, and took easily
All shining fruits into her eager hands.
That summer I hurried too, wakened
To books and music and circling philosophies.
I sat in the kitchen sorting through volumes of answers
That could not solve the mystery of the trees.
My grandmother stood among her kettles and ladles.
Smiling, in faulty grammar,
She praised my fortune and urged my lofty career:
So to please her I studied - but I will remember always
How she poured confusion out, how she cooled and labeled
All the wild sauces of the brimming year.

Sometime after her marriage to a much older man, Lizbeth began to worry when no baby got started. Tests showed that her husband was "almost" sterile. Several years of prayer and the miracle - a healthy baby boy. He is 22 days old in this picture and is already holding up his head and pushing to get closer to Mommy.

"Athens, the eye of Greece, mother of arts and eloquence."--John Milton
Greek drama provides no answer for the sufferings of humanity but modern thought still retains the Greeks' belief that man's acceptance of his fate can be ennobling.
TRAGEDY began as a religious rite performed in honor of Dionysus. Its theme showed the relationship between men and Gods. The plots dealt with the fundamentals issues of life and death.
COMEDY showed the Greeks' belief to face almost any situation with lightheartedness. This method was an asset in facing the truth.
MASKS were a very important feature of the theatre. They were used to instantly identify the characters and looked upon virtually as sacred.
CAST OF CHARACTERS
THESPIS 500 B.C.
Poet, dancer, and theatrical manager: Actors are called Thespians because he introduced a speaking actor.
AESCHYLUS 525-456 B.C.
Earliest playwright & first great tragic poet. He was deeply concerned with the moral issues. His concept of divinity was pure and almost monotheistic.
SOPHOCLES 496-406 B.C.
Great dramatist, sculptor, Ministry in Treasury, military leader, Admiral and friend of Pericles.
Most perceptive of the great tragic dramatist and was a poet of the human mind. He introduced three character to plays.
Sophocles said of Euripides, "He paints men as they are. I paint men as they ought to be."
EURIPIDES 480-406 B.C.
The most realistic and least orthodox of the three playwrights. His plays express his radical views of morality and religion. Modern poets have paid homage to the genius of Euripides.
ARISTOPHANES 450-385 B.C.
He was genius of comedy. His keen sense of humor, biting wit, and power of sarcasm, are all so vital that they affect the modern reader much the same way they did the Athenians long ago. His plays are inventive and laced with scathing attacks on his contemporaries.

I wrote the text.
Louise Bourgeois' spider statue "Maman" in the Tuileries, Paris. For me it wrecks the serenity of the otherwise beautiful gardens, being fairly scary to look at and speaking as it intentionally does of pain and torment.

This leaf spring mounts on the head plate. When the 'Auto' button is pressed, it catches on the auto switch linkage and moves the latter when the play key is pressed.
