If you asked a commoner passing on the street if they would venture to Hopedale Ohio, back down a gravel road, through some weeds, and into the pitch black at 4:13AM the likely answer would be a "hell no". Quite frankly the commoner could not comprehend the pure and good old-fashioned stupidity/boredom that would lead someone into this scenario. A 5 hour drive to Pittsburgh junction, filled with Sheetz french fries and plenty of BSing. Upon arrival we left the light of the truck and ventured to the tracks. We were investigating the abandoned signals when a distant sound echoed through the night. "It has to be a truck, no way the timing was this perfect." The sound stayed constant, then the sound revealed itself to be a bunch of EMD 645s, and then the noise lead to squeals and a light around the curve. Wheeling and Lake Erie train 218 has made its grand entrance to Pittsburgh Junction. Pitt Junction is a former controlled interlocking containing abandoned signals. While a switch is still here, the related infrastructure is abandoned. From an audio standpoint, it could be any time of the day as 218 dialed up on the radio. The high pitched Wheeling and Lake Erie dispatcher tone responded as the two parties sorted business. 218 got their railroad, set their switch, and took the front half of their train down the Valley Subdivision to work Timiron. The end of their train remained on the mainline as they pulled their Valley Sub cut down off the main. The foggy morning air reflected the headlights against the signals here. The train pulled through the interlocking and disappeared into the morning darkness. It would be 2 more hours until the train would shove back out, grab their train, and move just 3 miles east to swap crews with westbound train 213 in "downtown" Hopedale.

Answer : It is the Early Spider Orchid (Ophrys sphegodes) photographed on the ocean-facing downs of the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset. The buildings in the background are the Anvil Point Lighthouse complex. This orchid is one of the rarest in Britain, only being found along parts of the south coast e.g. Kent and this part of Dorset.

Personally I find the 'spider' hard to see but it is still a superb wild plant!

Some ancient call

That I’ve answered before

It lives in my walls

And it’s under the floor

If this was meant for me why does it hurt so much

And if you’re not made for me then why did we fall in love

A knock at my door

I thought I was alone

Unaware of what I thought I needed

I dropped like a stone

If I’m not mistaken then I was the last to know

And if you return for me I’d never want for more

You’re dislocated, don’t be like that

And you smile when you dive in, like you’re never coming back

So hold my body, yeah hold my breath

See your face when I black out, I’m never coming back

Fear of the water

Report from a photo trip to Lofoten - 34

Spectacular multi-colored aurora seen from the beach of Uttakleiv, Lofoten, Norway.

I am often asked if this image of the aurora is what it actually looks like. The answer is no. But the reason is not that the image is manipulated in any way. The reason lies in the lack of color sensitivity of the receptors (cone cells) in the human retina. This is why we perceive the colors less well at night, our vision concentrates on the brightness contrasts. The optical impression of the northern lights is therefore dominated by the relatively bright green stripes, the red areas are hardly noticed and at least don't appear as strong as in this picture. However, with the long-term exposure, the camera sensor is very well able to record the actually existing color tones. As a side note, you can also see far fewer stars with the naked eye than in this shot.

The image was captured with the Nikon Z 9 in camera-raw format (".nef") and therefore needed post-processing (this is done in-camera when shooting in jpeg format). I basically applied my standard post-processing in Lightroom that I would also apply to "normal" daylight photos. Apart from that, color temperature was set to be a little cooler than recorded by the camera. Furthermore, I corrected the exposure up by about two stops to reveal the details of the cliffs. (I had chosen relatively short exposure times for night shots so that the northern lights do not show any motion blur and the stars remain points. In my experience, the exposure correction in post-processing essentially has the same effect on image noise as increasing the ISO value when taking the picture.)

Today I will answer the most popular questions. And if you do not find your question in the list, write in the comments 💬 I will be happy to answer everyone.

Where is the best place to hold a photo shoot?

Places for a photo shoot are always discussed and selected exclusively from your wishes. For bad weather, you can always use a photo studio.

Do you

give clothes for a photo shoot?

I do not provide clothing, but I can help you choose the necessary option.

We are not models, do you help on the shoot?

Of course😉. I always tell you how best to put your foot, hand, and where to look after all. You don't have to worry. The main task for you is to relax, and I will also help you with this.

When will we get our photos?

It all depends on the workload of me, the photographer. But usually I always say срок when the photos are ready.

Full Story Here

Well, I beat the truck at least, but the improvidence... ugh, not so much.

Now I can almost guarantee that you’re thinking how the fuck can a foamer go up against a truck and also battle it out with improvidence all within 60 seconds? Well, I can give you both a short and a long answer. The short answer is straightforward: I am, quite frankly retarded (not actually, though, but also maybe because I’ve never been tested).

The long answer, Dan and Andy are locked in (I realise not everyone looking at train photos on Flickr is in their young 20’s like me, so a quick definition of locked in is the modern version of being "in the zone"—it means someone is intensely focused, fully committed, and performing at their absolute best) as any foamer could be, you may ask, how do these two fine gentlemen fare when locked in? Well, in a nutshell, it’ll consist of Dan cracking under the pressure of someone not going 30km/h (18.6411mph - see how stupid that sounds, use metric system yanks) over the speed limit whilst having tunnel vision to a cloud that is in another hemisphere, whilst Andy has an 80’s rock song blasting telling Dan to calm down whilst singing along to the song acting if this were not a high stakes life or death chase, and me? Downing a shooter shot whilst taking it all in. Ahhh, I love this hobby.

So back to the photo, after getting this BNSF local job coming off the big ass bridge over Lake Pend Oreille south of Sandpoint, it was all gas no breaks to the next shot. So, with the averaged locked-in experience completed, we’re now on the side of US Route 95, scrambling up the embankment, trying to get as high as we can. So good so far, yeah? But because we’re in a hurry and improvident me didn’t think changing to the nifty fifty prime would be a good idea, or in fact just keeping it on because that’s what I had attached for the shot prior. I’m left on top of the embankment, going shit, too tight. But that was really the least of my concerns when this massive truck paralleled the train, clipping the middle of the bogies on the locos. Luckily, it was going just quickly enough to give an obstructed view when the train was pushing the 70mm boundary. So you better believe we photoshopped him out; Truck 0 - Thomas 1, and the improvidence, well, Improvidence 1 - Thomas 0.

(A response to Quote the Raven )

The officers were satisfied. My manner had convinced them. I was singularly at ease. They sat, and while I answered cheerily, they chatted of familiar things. But, ere long, I felt myself getting pale and wished them gone. My head ached, and I fancied a ringing in my ears: but still they sat and still chatted. The ringing became more distinct: --It continued and became more distinct: I talked more freely to get rid of the feeling: but it continued and gained definiteness --until, at length, I found that the noise was not within my ears. No doubt I now grew very pale; --but I talked more fluently, and with a heightened voice. Yet the sound increased --and what could I do? It was a low, dull, quick sound --much such a sound as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I gasped for breath --and yet the officers heard it not. I talked more quickly --more vehemently; but the noise steadily increased. I arose and argued about trifles, in a high key and with violent gesticulations; but the noise steadily increased. Why would they not be gone? I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides, as if excited to fury by the observations of the men --but the noise steadily increased. Oh God! what could I do? I foamed --I raved --I swore! I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon the boards, but the noise arose over all and continually increased. It grew louder --louder --louder! And still the men chatted pleasantly, and smiled. Was it possible they heard not? Almighty God! --no, no! They heard! --they suspected! --they knew! --they were making a mockery of my horror!-this I thought, and this I think. But anything was better than this agony! Anything was more tolerable than this derision! I could bear those hypocritical smiles no longer! I felt that I must scream or die! and now --again! --hark! louder! louder! louder! louder!

"Villains!" I shrieked, "dissemble no more! I admit the deed! --tear up the planks! here, here! --It is the beating of his hideous heart!"

When a crazy fog movement rolled into Toronto recently, many of the city's photographers went out to shoot the fog. The initial inclination for us 'rooftoppers' is to head for the closest and tallest building you can find...which we did. As the fog rolled in blanketing us at the current roof level (around 53 storeys) my friend Ryan had an obvious answer as to where to go next; the highest vantage point in the city.

After a hilarious encounter with the staff of said building (which I will share with you in person should that day ever come), we were literally on top of the world looking down on the city engulfed in fog. Ryan, known for his timelapse work (see Toronto Tempo) was doing his thing while I was there with only my Olympus OM-D and a couple of shots left on my Bronica medium format camera. We both did ok from up there.

Also, if you haven't seen my Rooftopping article in the Daily Mail, check it out.
