It's certainly not the prettiest photo but there's a little backstory as to why I took it and why this scene upset me somewhat. I'll apologize in advance for the monologue.

The office where I work is a little set back from the main road on rather dumpy city-owned land soon to be redeveloped (of course). We regularly have drug addicts and homeless people camped out around the parking lot and every 2 weeks or so they get moved on by the cops. This picture shows all that was left yesterday from the latest group - about 4 very rough-looking young men and a beautiful husky - who've been camped out (and passed out) here the past several weeks.

As I've passed each morning and evening, I've said hello and made a point to pet their dog. Most times there's been hardly anyone around, just the dog and someone passed out among dirty clothes and trash on this futon, and maybe another person in messy shape from drugs. And while the dog seemed to be in pretty good shape health wise, I couldn't help noticing how little it reacted - no tail wagging, little eye contact, he/she stayed tightly curled up in a ball, motionless and somewhat dead behind the eyes to be honest. I can't deny I wondered what scenes this poor dog has likely witnessed, especially at night when more people turn up at this site and needles and junk are scattered everywhere, as well as half-dressed, slumped bodies next morning.

I snook over with dog treats a few times and always gave my friend a soft stroke behind the ears and a chin rub - but still very little change. He/she seemed generally quite depressed. I noticed there were no dog chews or toys anywhere (of course, because the people living here have nothing) and so, on my way home on Tuesday, I stopped at a local thrift store and picked up the little blue stuffed toy dog you see on the couch. Next morning I crept past the guy spread out there and found the husky curled up tight behind a shopping cart and pile of garbage. I leant in, stroked his/her head, gave treats and tucked the soft toy just under its cheek. I thought I maybe saw a softer look in those eyes...almost. And I'm not saying these guys aren't kind to their dog, just that I'm not sure it has ever known much affection, or play, or even a soft bed. (When you think about it, the same could probably be said of its owners.)

So when I left the office last night and almost the entire camp had been cleared out, along with their dog - I was surprised and a little sad I guess. Then I noticed the blue stuffy, soggy from the rain, left behind on the couch. Ouch, that pulled at my heartstrings I have to say. Call me daft but I just wanted that husky to have something for itself, a gift of kindness, a show of care. But everyone was gone, and the husky with them, moved (pushed) on to the next place.

The whole scene bothered me on several levels and I felt somewhat choked up even as I took this shot. Hence the title.

I meet some great college students at the zoos. This young woman is finishing her first-semester stint at the zoo. After Christmas, she will be enjoy another internship in animal conservation, working with graphic art.

I love really be able to see the amazing colors of the Green Heron! These youngsters will be gone soon, but I have enjoyed every moment I have been able to spend watching them!

This is one of the few images I can show - at this close-range view - from Mama Fox and one her cubs. There were many memorable moments that I didn't get to preserve with a camera. Memories will last a lifetime.

This is the same intern as in the previous photo on my stream, but I'm posting this image because of the bottom graphic on the wall. Goats are not like dogs. They don't like to be pet on the tops of their heads, but in other places. This guide shows guests how best to interact with goats.

Unnatural Affections

One Pride Day in Toronto, I noticed a guy taking a million pictures of all the scandalous perverts, but pulling faces to clearly communicate his disapproval. Of course I had to photograph his performance. The moment he noticed, he rushed up and demanded I stop. I dedicate this to him and hope he found some kind of redemption in his collection of dirty, dirty pictures.

So, for your consideration, a set of illustrations taken from an encyclopaedic catalogue of human sexual diversity, chosen to poke at the way we run together moralizing with evidence-based medicine to produce ideas about what's healthy and what's criminal. Experts dissect and evaluate and problematize, religions vilify - and tourists walk around with cameras taking pictures and going EWWWWW!

Hunger: Do You Know The Facts?

It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition. That's roughly 100 times as many as those who actually die from these causes each year.

About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes. This is down from 35,000 ten years ago, and 41,000 twenty years ago. Three-fourths of the deaths are children under the age of five.

Famine and wars cause about 10% of hunger deaths, although these tend to be the ones you hear about most often. The majority of hunger deaths are caused by chronic malnutrition. Families facing extreme poverty are simply unable to get enough food to eat.

I love photographing horses, not the easiest to do, there are standards, but with the help of the breeders it usually becomes a very pleasant and exciting experience.

Here was a fortuitous moment, and as a photographer, yes you have to focus on the main subject and there is MUCH to think about and concentrate on, but as a creative you stay aware of what is going on around you, and these 'off' images often become my favourite shots...

One of the horses I had photographed was taken back, so this was one of those 'in-between' moments...

This is the mother in the family that breeds horses, tough and yet rewarding.

They witness the birth and tend to the foals with love and yet when they lose one, they are quite stoic about it...

Another, slightly older foal quickly came for it's share of affection. No matter human or animal, we all enjoy love!

Such tenderness, closeness, emotion, just HAD to be captured.

I wish you all the very best and thank you for all your kind words, time, comments, invites, faves and Awards. Very much appreciated. M, (*_*)

What's so pathological about them? - Why interpretations off course!

I love the eerie "melting" sensation of a bustling metropolitan in it's utmost mayhem. It's like you are high, but without being intoxicated on meth, alcohol or psychedelic rock. Old Dhaka and it's convoluted streets can have that strange effect on you...as if the boundaries all around are closing in. Sort of like "Chaos Theory", with lots of chaos, but little or no theoretical implications.

Riveting!

Taken in Shakhari Bazaar, Old Dhaka. A father/kidnapper is seen storming through the narrow alleyway clinching onto his daughter's/ransom's hands.

Lightbox recommended.

I rather crudely awakened Yuba (accidentally - really!) to take his picture and he demanded affection as recompense for losing part of his nap.
