An entry for the Challenge Group 112 Pictures in 2012 No.75 ~ Five minutes from home.

Castle Tower, South Kyme, Lincolnshire, UK.
The Tower is now owned by English Heritage and the owner/farmer of the surrounding land, who lives in Manor House, is the registered keyholder and arrangements can be made to view at his convenience. Something that we have not yet done, but intend to do so! I don't know what is or is not still inside the tower now, so it would be interesting to find out!
South Kyme Castle Tower History
On a site to the west of the village stands Kyme Tower for which the village is best known. This was a mediaeval castle which is believed to have been built between 1339 and 1381 by Gilbert de Umfraville third earl of Angus and lord of Kyme. It was torn down between 1720 and 1725. Originally four towers formed a substantial castle but only the single ashlar tower exists today. The last Baron Kyme died in 1338 and the barony fell into abeyance. The manor and estates descended by marriage to the TALBOYS family.
Elizabeth Blount
Daughter of John Blount of Kinlet and Catherine Pershall, heiress of Knightly and Lady in Waiting to Catalina of Aragon, when she was living with her husband Arthur Prince of Wales at Ludlow. Elizabeth was to become one of Queen Catalina's maids of honour from May 1512. Her father had been appointed one of the "King's Spears" or Royal Body Guard.
Elizabeth was very bright, and so good at singing and dancing that she partnered the King in the "mummery" which was part of the Christmas celebrations of 1514, while the Queen was still recovering from the loss of a new baby yet again. Elizabeth "wan the King's harte", and her father was promoted to "Esquire of the Body", which meant personal attendance on the King in his bedroom.
Elizabeth was not the first schoolgirl to be Henry VIII's mistress. Her friend, Elizabeth Bryan, was given a diamond necklace, a mink coat and a husband, Nicholas Carew when she gave birth to a son at the age of twelve, she was called "the young wife". And Henry VIII gave her mother £500.
Elizabeth Blount became pregnant and delivered a healthy son in 1519, probably about 16 Jun. Cardinal Wolsey arranged for Elizabeth to live in Jericho Priory, Blackmore, Essex. The King visited her so often, and his baby son, it became a standing joke with courtiers that the King had "gone to Jericho". In 1522, Elizabeth was replaced in the King's affections by Mary Boleyn. Just returned from France with her younger sister Anne.
Henry had plans for his only son, but they did not include his son's mother. Cardinal Wolsey arranged a marriage for Elizabeth to Gilbert Talboys. He was the son of Sir George Talboys of Kyme, a descendant of the Umfravilles, Earls of Angus and the ancient Lords of Kyme, but unfortunately barking mad. Gilbert was knighted in 1524, in 1525, he was appointed Sheriff of Lincolnshire. They had a son, George, to be followed by Robert and Elizabeth (who was to be Baroness Talboys after the early deaths of her brothers, and married twice, the second time to Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick).
In 1525 Elizabeth and Gilbert were ordered to take up residence in Lincolnshire, and moved into the castle of South Kyme, built by Gilbert's ancestor, Gilbert De Umfraville, Earl of Angus, in the mid 14th century.

Just a warm moment. Couldn't resist taking the shot. A few seconds after the previous picture. Sometimes you could walk all day and get nothing. Rarely, two in two minutes. Still I realise most people couldn't care for this 'art form' so i've been quite hesitant to even upload; and lazy to shoot. These are nearly a year old.
House of the Blackheads (Latvian: Melngalvju nams, German: Schwarzhäupterhaus) is a building situated in the old town of Riga, Latvia.[1]
The original building was erected during the first third of the 14th century for the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a guild for unmarried merchants, shipowners, and foreigners in Riga. Major works were done in the years 1580 and 1886, adding most of the ornamentations. The sculptures were made by the workshop of August Volz.
The building was bombed to a ruin by the Germans on June 28, 1941 and the remains were demolished by the Soviets in 1948.
The current reconstruction was erected from 1995 to 1999 by Valērijs Kargins, the president of Parex Bank.

The Brotherhood of Blackheads
Towards the end of the 14th century, the guilds uniting Riga’s merchants and craftsmen were joined by a brotherhood of banquet caterers to upper classes which quite significantly called themselves Blackheads.
Its members included young and unmarried merchants of foreign, mostly German, descent. When traveling and supplying exotic goods from overseas, they managed to protect their ships and caravans from pirates and robbers.
The Blackheads chose St. Maurice as their patron saint, who traditionally was depicted as a black soldier in knight’s armor. After obtaining their tenant’s rights and entering holy wedlock, members of the brotherhood become part of Riga’s patrician elite, serving as councilors, members of the Great Guild and respected members of the city’s community. The 17th century merchant organization, the Brotherhood of the Blackheads, became the sole tenant of the House of the Blackheads.

Women love shoes. We're not ones to make sweeping generalisations so you can take this fact as true. It's also true that some men have a sneaker addiction but that's not entirely relevant right now. There are even stories of women having surgery to reshape their feet just so they can fit into that perfect pair of Jimmy Choo's but all of that pails in comparison to this lovely lady and her deep rooted affection for shoes of all kinds. Some might call it an obsession whilst other might simply label her as insane. As true as that might be she really doesn't care as she's the podiatric princess and no one can tell her otherwise (well, perhaps her GP but that's not something I'd want to get involved with...)

We came across a small pride of lions (Pantera leo) feasting on a dead cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer). It didn’t look like a fresh kill, but there was still enough meat to keep the lions’ interest.
