Geai des chênes (Garrulus glandarius) Neuchâtel, Suisse.
Roi des sous bois. Plus que tous les autres corvidés, le geai des chênes est un oiseau forestier. Il affectionne particulièrement les forêts claires avec un sous-bois dense. On peut également l’observer en terrain ouvert, mais il ne s'éloigne en aucun cas d'une bonne couverture forestière, bien entendu à cause de ses prédateurs, en particulier les rapaces. Le Geai des chênes est omnivore, mais essentiellement végétarien. Il aime les graines les baies et fruits, surtout les glands les noisettes et les faînes. Parfois il se nourrit aussi de céréales (maïs), des fruits des vergers comme les cerises. Il mange également des insectes et autres invertébrés et plus rarement des œufs et oisillons. Il cache des réserves entre les racines, dans les feuilles ou dans le sol. Il récupère la plus grande partie de la nourriture enfouie en hiver et au printemps, même si il le faut sous une couche de neige.

Taken the same day as my last post. They seemed very happy to greet each other. This went on for a minute or two. The female was already on the rocks with her ducklings when the drake arrived. He greeted the ducklings too, although not as enthusiastically. I suppose it could have been a adult child returning to visit its mother, I've seen juvenile, almost adult males do that. But I'd guess it was her mate. In any case, they definitely shared some affection. I felt double lucky to see it. It's my favorite thing to photograph. I know people who refuse to believe birds feel emotions, even though its plain as day that they do. And I just love to see them show it.
I went back to the old Rolleiflex (Zeiss Planar, 75f3.5) of my father which I have not used for 30 or 40 years. It still works almost perfectly, though it will be serviced soon. A pair of Silvereyes, winter back yard, New Zealand. Silvereyes (also known as Wax-eye and locally as Tauhou) when paired show great affection for each other, stroking and preening one another's feathers and cuddling together. Silvereyes are slightly smaller than a sparrow.
